Drastic action needs to be taken to reverse this ugly trend. Some of the proffered solutions to global warming is the adoption of renewable energy usage and a stop of fossil fuels combustion. However, the low capacity factor and energy return has been the bane on the usage of some renewable energy sources. A leeway however, exists in the technology of removal of greenhouse gases referred to as Carbon Capture. The widely adopted method being at point source because of its high concentration favouring easier processes of removal. This technology has received increased attention over the years as evident from data for the past five years. However, this technology alone cannot guarantee atmospheric CO2 levels required to maintain global temperature rise below the 1.50C mark. Negative emission technology processes of which the Direct Air Capture (DAC) is one needs to be developed. The infancy of the DAC ...

These engines are significant contributors to GHG emissions. However, there have been recent improvements in their design. Natural gas produces lower GHG emissions during combustion, making it suitable as a fuel in internal combustion engines. Aside from the emission impact of gasoline and diesel, the collapse of Nigeria’s petroleum refineries has impacted the availability of the products and caused them to have exorbitant prices for the populace. The country is, however, richly blessed with natural gas, which is waiting to be tapped and put to use. The conversion of a fleet of diesel trucks by a local haulage company will have both financial and GHG emissions impacts. This study investigates these impacts. By the fifty-third month, the investment starts to yield dividends, which accrue to over $34,000 over the useful life of each truck. Also, f...

The bulk of the processes that are undergone in these industries are laminar flowing fluids with the attendant need for low-pressure losses which the Kenics static mixers are better suited for. The mixing of fluids is achieved through the splitting and shearing at successive element junctions and stretching and folding along the length of the elements. The performance of Kenics static mixers can be enhanced by optimizing the total blade twist angle, however, the blade pitch has little or no impactful effect. The device geometry optimization is a criterion for its performance enhancement. This study investigates the output mixture strength of the Kenics static mixer using slotted mixer elements solved numerically with Finite Element Method code; COMSOL Multiphysics. The Kenics static mixer performance was optimized with the use of slotted mixer elements as it was observed...

However, the inter-spatial arrangement of the tubes of any tube bundle is a determining factor for its thermal and hydraulic performance. In this paper, the effect of varying the transverse and longitudinal pitches downstream staggered circular tube bundle on the heat transfer and flow characteristic was numerically analyzed. Seven variations of tube arrangements were studied by changing the tube pitches within a Reynolds number range of 7 381 to 22 214. The analyses were carried out using the k-ε equation model imposed with the realizability constraint and were solved with finite volume CFD code, COMSOL Multiphysics. The results obtained were found to be in good agreement with existing correlations. The tube bundles with decreasing pitches demonstrated better heat transfer performance while those with increasing pitches exhibited a lower friction factor. Thus, the best thermal-hydr...

Biofuels are coming in to fill the gap with the potential of reduced emissions and being renewable. While biofuels feedstock at times can compete with food cultivation for land and water, some feedstock is just allowed to rot away as wastes and some of such in Nigeria are Mango seeds, African Star Apple seeds, Orange peel and African Pear. This result in environmental pollution and economic loss. The current fraction of renewable energy in Nigeria annual energy production is negligible, and its fraction in the consumed energy is about 3%. This narrative can change with the exploration of her vast agricultural residues. This study seeks to explore some agricultural residues in Nigeria and waste oil, determine their suitability in the generation of energy when converted to biodiesel, and ...

The manufacturing industries of Nigeria are in a state of comatose, just as research activities in her ivory towers of learning is at a low state because of the epileptic electricity supply. There are approved licenses for electricity generation to the tune of 26,000 MW as of 2015, and the current available capacity is in excess of 6000 MW of the installed generation capacity of about 12,000 MW. An average of about 4000 MW is what get distributed to the populace partly due to the constraints on the transmission and the distribution network, however, the manufacturing industries demand stands in excess of 13,000 MW. Decentralized generation in line with some of the windows of opportunity provided by the National Electric Regulatory Commission will allow for the supply of t...

Also, for each converted truck there is a reduction in GHG emissions of around 13.22 tons annually. Contribution/Originality: This study brings to light the potential gains of using diesel-CNG dual-fuel engines for goods haulage in terms of greenhouse gas emission reduction and cost savings and serves as a template for the adoption of this technology.

Electricity-powered vehicles will displace the internal combustion engine-powered automobiles. However, electricity-powered vehicles are yet to meet some of the automobile demands. A paradigm shift with attendant infrastructural change is necessary for its adoption. Synthetic fuels promise to be the solution. Their invention dates back to the early twentieth century when the concern was not about climate change. The search for alternative fuels later metamorphosed to when fossil fuels reserve depletion and petroleum derivatives cost became a concern. The alternatives were made available in biofuels. The prevailing challenge is now climate change. It is the consequence of the emission of greenhouse gases from the combustion of petroleum derivatives in automobiles. Synthetic fuels show the potential of coming to the rescue despite the prevailing ...

The cooling rate plays a significant role in the resulting mechanical properties of cast iron. It determines the grain growth and size. The mechanical properties of cast iron variation along its length are achieved either with the use of different mold materials or by sectioning to ensure varied cooling rates. Mechanical properties can, however, also be varied along its length without any of these adopted methods by the incorporation of cooling channels in the mould. This study seeks to expand the frontier of this concept with the use of different cooling fluids and fluid flow rate, and numerically investigate the impact on the cooling rate of gray cast iron (class 40). The cooling curve for the cast iron was impacted by the use of different cooling fluids with the attainment of the desired mechanical properties with the selection of an appropriate cooling fluid. Also, the flow rate of the cooling fluid has an impact on the ca...

Extensive studies are being undertaken to optimize the performance of compression ignition engines by combustion chamber geometry modification, however, this is largely executed with experiments. Numerical results on the effect of piston crown geometry as a means of combustion chamber modification on the performance characteristics of a compression ignition engine are presented in this short paper. The impact of in-cylinder fluid flow velocity was used to evaluate the performance of the engine. The in-cylinder motion of the fluid was positively impacted using the conical, hemispherical and dual hemisphere indented piston crowns, which is in agreement with previous experimental studies.

Several studies have been conducted on microwave ablation for the treatment of tumours and have focused on different antenna geometries, its intensity, and time of application. This work seeks to find a correlation between the relative permittivity of the catheter and the temperature distribution which determines necrosis of the tissue by using Tefzel ETFE, Teflon FEP, PFA Teflon type A, PFA Teflon type B, Teflon AF, and PTFE Teflon type B while modelling using COMSOL Multiphysics. The extent of the thermal lesion was observed to be dependent on the relative permittivity of the catheter material, with Tefzel ETFE giving the best performance and Teflon AF providing the least.

Compression ignition engines have wide application in the transportation, agricultural, construct... more Compression ignition engines have wide application in the transportation, agricultural, construction and industrial sectors which are critical for the economic sustainability of any nation. These engines are powered with petroleum diesel which is however, been threatened by the reality of crude oil going into extinction in some couple of years if new reserves are not discovered, and also the need to reduce global warming; a consequence of the effect of its combustion products. Biodiesel is a renewable fuel with similar properties to petroleum diesel, and can be used purely or in blends without the need for modifying the existing engines. The thermal efficiency of an engine is a very important performance indicator, and researchers would stop at nothing to ensure its improvement. The kinematic viscosity is one of the fuel's properties which contribute to an engine thermal efficiency. This work is thus designed to review some past studies on the use of biodiesels and its blends in engines and find a correlation between the kinematic viscosity and the thermal efficiency. A correlation was established to exist between the fuel kinematic viscosity and the engine thermal efficiency.
