Early studies of Zr-MOF-catalyzed hydrolytic degradation of an organophospho-ester type CWA, Sarin, and its simulant, dimethyl-4-nitrophenylphosphate (DMNP), suggested that the activity originates from ZrIV-OH-ZrIV moieties that resemble the structure of the active-site phosphotriesterase enzyme. Measurements of pKa values for hexa-zirconium-node-sited bridging hydroxo, terminal hydroxo, and aqua ligands reveal essentially complete conversion of mu-hydroxo ligands to substitution-inert mu-oxo ligands at alkaline pHs, ruling out a primary role for ZrIV-OH-ZrIV moieties, despite the resemblance to the phosphotriesterase enzyme active-site. The measurements also rule out a secondary role as a hydrogen bond donor/stabilizer of bound DMNP. Within the engineering industry craftsmen retained their predominant position throughout the first half of the century despite the increasing numbers of semi-skilled workers. The A.E.U., in contrast to its British parent union, readily opened its ranks to all newcomers to the industry but was still craftdominated in the 1950 . At the same time the importance of the friendly society aspects of the A.E.U. diminished continually and 'Industrial ' members, entitled only to strike pay, formed a majority at the outbreak of the Second World War. In succeeding years they came to represent 70 per cent of total membership.

The goal of this work is to investigate whether estimates of ease of part handling and part inser... more The goal of this work is to investigate whether estimates of ease of part handling and part insertion can be provided by multimodal simulation using virtual environment (VE) technology. The long-term goal is to use this data to extend computer-aided design (CAD) systems in order to evaluate and compare alternate designs using design for assembly analysis. A unified, physically-based model has been developed for modeling dynamic interactions and has been built into a multimodal VE system called the Virtual Environment for Design for Assembly (VEDA). The designer sees a visual representation of objects, hears collision sounds when objects hit each other, and can feel and manipulate the objects through haptic interface devices with force feedback. Currently these models are 2D in order to preserve interactive update rates. A regioselective Pd-mediated C−H bond arylation methodology for tryptophans, utilizing stable ary... more A regioselective Pd-mediated C−H bond arylation methodology for tryptophans, utilizing stable aryldiazonium salts, affords C2-arylated tryptophan derivatives, in several cases quantitatively. The reactions proceed in air, without base, and at room temperature in EtOAc. The synthetic methodology has been evaluated and compared against other tryptophan derivative arylation methods using the CHEM21 green chemistry toolkit. The behavior of the Pd catalyst species has been probed in preliminary mechanistic studies, which indicate that the reaction is operating homogeneously, although Pd nanoparticles are formed during substrate turnover. The effects of these higher order Pd species on catalysis, under the reaction conditions examined, appear to be minimal: e.g., acting as a Pd reservoir in the latter stages of substrate turnover or as a moribund form (derived from catalyst deactivation). We have determined that TsOH shortens the induction period observed when [ArN 2 ]BF 4 salts are employed with Pd(OAc) 2. Pd(OTs) 2 (MeCN) 2 was found to be a superior precatalyst (confirmed by kinetic studies) in comparison to Pd(OAc) 2 .

The simulation of the driving experience has been used for both research and most especially for ... more The simulation of the driving experience has been used for both research and most especially for driver training. In large part, the state of the art in diving simulation has been contingent upon wider development in simulation science. The challenge of ground-vehicle simulation provides stiffer challenges than simulation of airborne vehicles. Current advances have seen high-fidelity, multi-million dollar facilities. The advantage is that they provide capacities now coming very close to the Turing test for simulated reality. The disadvantage is that they are so expensive as to be almost unique and so no replicable science is conducted on them. Simulation not only improves with the technical capacities of the age, it also diversifies. Thus, in modern simulations there are options associated with game-playing, full virtual environments, and augmented forms of reality as well as improvements on the traditional fixed and motion-based facilities. The authors anticipate that such branches of development will further diversify as new and innovative methods of rendering surrogate surroundings continue to proliferate
