This chapter discusses how both formal and informal history education in Thailand have successful... more This chapter discusses how both formal and informal history education in Thailand have successfully sustained and strengthened the core values and practices of the Thai nation-state, as envisioned by its traditional elite. The task of creating a modern concept of Thai history was undertaken by the royalist elite, groomed along an Orientalist outlook which marginalised the identities of other ethnic groups in the narrative. Thus they were assimilated into the majority "Thai" race, but were not equal citizens. History education provided the ideational and ideological component in the formation and development of the nation-state. While the official history reproduced in textbooks was hegemonic, it was not uncontested: Jit Phumisak has highlighted the dignity of indigenous and minority peoples, including the Malay-Muslim minority. The first part focuses on the conceptualisation of the Thai nation (chat Thai) and race (chon chat), in relation to the formation of the nation-state, followed by the invention of national history and government policies on ethnic homogeneity and national identity that have been utilised in school textbooks. The final part discusses the impact of nation building and monoethnic policies, shedding light on the origins and development of ethnic problems. The United States has become the quintessential model of social and economic growth to which all ... more The United States has become the quintessential model of social and economic growth to which all developing countries aspire. However, the United States was not always unified in the pursuit of liberal capitalist development. A little over one hundred years ago, the Old Southern United States posed a formidable challenge to the modernization of liberal capitalist model. The Old South is better known as the modern slave society. Romanticized and popularized in the movie, Gone With the Wind, this slave society was built upon plantation economy and paternal social relations with racial superiority. Based on such different social structures arose sectional conflict between the liberal North and the conservative South. 1 The impossibilitiy of reconciling these two forms of social relations resulted in the tragic Civil War in 1861-65. My interest in the history of the Old South came from the nature of the Southern society which, seems to be un-American, was built upon a hierarchical social order as a result of the master-slave relations. Studies of modern Southeast Asian history and politics have gone through many shifts and developm... more Studies of modern Southeast Asian history and politics have gone through many shifts and developments, resulting in many new and critical works since the call by John Smail in the early 1960s for the possibility of an "autonomous Southeast Asian history" (1961). Since then many novel and challenging methodologies and analytical frameworks especially by Southeast Asian scholars have been added to the new historiography of Southeast Asia. Examples include the works of Reynaldo C. Ileto on Payson and Revolution (1979), Thongchai Winichakul on Siam Mapped (1994), and Michael Aung-thwin on "The 'Classical' in Southeast Asia: The Present in the Past" (1995), to name just a few outstanding works. Even with the revisionist studies of the region, the dominant perspective and approach is still national history focused on state-centric narratives. This is particularly unavoidable when dealing with the period of anti-colonialism and national liberation from Western colonial masters. Thus, the nations, we are told and many concurred, were created by national leaders and elites who had courageously fought the Western colonial powers. Their heroic struggles against colonialism paved the way for subsequent independence in Southeast Asian countries. These historical and political facts are impossible to refute or reinterpret. We cannot deny these great nationalist leaders' historical roles and contributions to the birth of the new nations. As a matter of fact, we have always been taught to revere and respect, and been reminded in every national holiday to be grateful to, those sacred figures. We, however, are rarely or never told of the many facets of their real life-histories and practices. What were the other aspects and factors that also contributed to the success of the liberation, the path that led to the development or failure of the new nations? Recent studies shed more light on the history and politics of the nationalist movements in the region. More importantly, the new realism of Post-modern history manages to open up new approaches to, and inter pretations of, the people and movements, of ideas and practices, across class and gender and ethnicity categories of the new nations. The post-Cold War era saw some of the other less promi nent activists and fighters, whose struggles and political ideologies which formerly did not correspond with existing regimes, are now able to speak up. Stories and memories of those unfortunate fighters and their families which used to be expunged from a national past because of their radical political ideologies began to be reinstated within the nation's history. Given this new conjuncture, Caroline S. Hau and Kasian Tejapira's edited volume, Traveling Nation-Makers: Transnational Flows and Movements in the Making of Modern Southeast Asia, adds another strong contender to the new Southeast Asian Studies. The West and Siam's Quest for Modernity

This paper examines the interactions that occurred between Westerners and the Siamese elite in th... more This paper examines the interactions that occurred between Westerners and the Siamese elite in the nineteenth century. The author contends that the perceived superiority of Western science and knowledge came not as a result of its being Western as such, but rather as a consequence of the Siamese elite's secure political position in terms of its physical and intellectual powers. The adoption of Western knowledge was measured against the truth of Theravada Buddhism and Buddhist political ideas. Western knowledge and science thus provided the ruling classes with a modern perception of themselves and the world. Nevertheless, the persistence of Siamese sakdina [feudal] social relations ultimately prevented complete modernization. Modernity therefore ended up in the hands of the elite and did not extend to the wider populace.

This article attempts to answer why industrial capital had not developed in Japan to the point of... more This article attempts to answer why industrial capital had not developed in Japan to the point of providing the basis for the rise of capitalism like it happened in Europe. The key finding is the role of merchant capital in the Tokugawa period. The important condition in this historic development is the system of production for the markets must replace the production for use. However, merchant capital is only circulating capital in which it has as yet by no means become the foundation of production. Moreover, the political roles of the merchant class are still much less significant than their economic roles. The merchant class as a whole does not cause the total transformation of the Tokugawa society. The rural merchants were still bound within a feudal authority structure which limited their activities to a certain extent. Thus, merchant capital, in its highest stage of the Tokugawa period, could not become industrial capital. The most it could perform was to provide a head-start and ground for the eventual emergence of a fully developed capitalist system.

An often-heard saying is that Siam/Thailand can&#39;t be compared with any other country. This leads to another claim of being unique and, finally, being Thai, in which Thai-ness has become the means and ends of this process of inquiry. It&#39;s the beginning and end of Thai studies. Nevertheless, a few of the Thai specialists do not believe in this myth-history of Thailand and began to re-study and re-search the hidden and opaque sides of Thai history and society, resulting in a volume of eight critical and provoking essays by prominent well-known specialists of Thai studies with the title The Ambiguous Allure of the West: Traces of the Colonial in Thailand. Given the topics and insights which the authors display, one must graciously commend the effort and labour, physical and intellectual, that the two editors, Rachel Harrison and Peter Jackson, put into the making of this excellent book. Harrison, in her superb introduction, discusses at great length details of multifarious aspects of relations between Siam/Thailand and the West, the most important group of foreigners Siam has encountered from the seventeenth century to the present. The problematic relations stem from the political relations between the two unequal states, resulting in the state of &#39;semicolony&#39;, &#39;auto-colony&#39; and &#39;crypto-colony&#39; depending on various analyses of individual authors. Thus the focus of the book on Thai encounter with the farang, and all that it constitutes, generates an emphasis on &#39;convergence, assimilation, transculturation, trans-mediation&#39;. Gone are the monolithic, single and pure, and unique characteristics of the country. Instead, the emphasis is on one&#39;s hybrid and heterogeneity. Clearly, the approach of this book is postcolonial history, which prompts the question of how one can study the legacy of colonialism as evident elsewhere in the region when Siam has never been a colony. Peter Jackson, in &#39;The Ambiguities of Semicolonial Power in Thailand&#39;, admits the ambiguous colonial history in Thailand but firmly believes in the use of postcolonial study in the case of Thai history. The positive outcome of such an approach is that it makes a comparative study of Thai history a reality. Semicolonial analysis, he concludes, &#39;entails a double form of analysis that both critiques local essentialisms and also resists the potentially hegemonic universalism of theory&#39;. Pattana Kitiarsa, in &#39;An Ambiguous Intimacy: Farang as Siamese Occidentalism&#39;, traces the historical construction of farang in Thai thought in order to see the influence of this notion in the process of identity making in Thai culture and society. Pattana conceives farang as &#39;an expression of Siamese/Thai Occidentalism, that is, an historically and culturally constructed way of knowing, dealing with, criticizing, condemning, consuming and imagining the West as a powerful and suspicious Other&#39;. For Thai, the West is the powerful Other. Initiated by the Royal elites in the nineteenth century, the farang concept was repeated and &#39;continued by military dictators and bureaucrats through the twentieth century, and is now driven by middle-class consumers and the mass media&#39;. The chapter gives very informative and challenging development of the notion in each historical period. Beginning with the farang as &#39;suspicious strangers&#39; in the empire of Ayutthaya to farang as &#39;Distant Others&#39; in the early Bangkok period to the Imperialist farang in the reign of King Mongkut and finally, in the late nineteenth century, farang as agent of civilization and modernization. Two splendid chapters are on the most modern and influential signifier of popular imagination, the cinema. Rachel Harrison&#39;s &#39;Mind the Gap: (En)countering the West and the Making of Thai Identities on Film&#39; carefully analyses the new mode of Thai movies which exploit the West in their imagination of the identity of Thai nation and people. The construction of Thai identity now can go along with the acknowledgment of &#39;Otherness&#39;. While this &#39;bourgeois cinema&#39; represents the desire and consumerism of the new middle class in Bangkok and urban cities, May Adadol Ingawanij and Richard Lowell MacDonald in &#39;Blissfully Whose? Jungle Pleasures, Ultra-modernist Cinema and the Cosmopolitan Thai Auteur&#39; present another contrasting...

Significant ideas and concepts include independence, national identity, and progress. Each epochal reform created internal social structures, progressive men and women who harbored new ideas and concepts, which challenged and even engaged in the transformation of traditional society. The particular political idea that is the most problematic is democracy, which conservatives and royalists deem most destructive to their old social order. Thus, this remains the persistent and longest political conflict.
