Negotiating Ethnic Diversity and National Identity in History Education, 2023

The task of creating a modern concept of Thai history was undertaken by the royalist elite, groomed along an Orientalist outlook which marginalised the identities of other ethnic groups in the narrative. Thus they were assimilated into the majority "Thai" race, but were not equal citizens. History education provided the ideational and ideological component in the formation and development of the nation-state. While the official history reproduced in textbooks was hegemonic, it was not uncontested: Jit Phumisak has highlighted the dignity of indigenous and minority peoples, including the Malay-Muslim minority. The first part focuses on the conceptualisation of the Thai nation (chat Thai) and race (chon chat), in relation to the formation of the nation-state, followed by the invention of national history and government policies on ethnic homogeneity and national identity that have been utilised in school textbooks. The final part discusses the impact of nation building and monoethnic policies, shedding light on the origins and development of ethnic problems.
