The samples were carried at Ipioca and Ponta Verde beaches, northeast Brazil. The individuals were measured and had the stomach contents analysed, the items identified to the lowest taxonomic level and calculated the frequency of occurrence and the food index. There were significant differences in feeding of the species in both areas, because in Ponta Verde the individuals ingested more algae and detritus, while in Ipioca the feeding was more diversified and contain items of animal origin. However, in the region of Ipioca was observed the ingestion of plastic similar to the inappropriate disposed fishing materials present on this site. Despite the considerable frequency plastics in the stomachs, the food index indicates that plastics have low influence in relation to the total volume of food found of the stomachs of E. gonagra. This shows that the species has been exposing with residues of anthropic activities at Ipioca, and is not a mortality factor right now, may be in the future if the amount of plastic debris increase on the environment.

We hypothesized that the parasitic infection is able to negatively affect the prawn’s nutritional condition and that this interaction can modify growth relationships in male individuals. We collected both parasitized (n = 25) and parasite-free (n = 25) individuals in several locations of the Contas River, state of Bahia, Brazil, which had their morphometric characteristics determined, including of the parasites. Relative growth models were constructed for both groups in order to compare slopes and intercepts and determine if the growth patterns are modified by the parasite. We also determined the body condition of the prawns, which was also compared between the two groups. Our results clearly demonstrated that the parasitic infection is able to induce modifications in relative growth patterns in male individuals and that this isopod is capable of reducing the nutritional condition of the prawns. This study indicates that this parasite can induce deleterious effects in the prawn, but individually. Further studies should be conducted to assess the relevance of our findings in conservation and management.

The species Atya scabra is occasionally associated with fisheries, especially in Northeast and Northern Brazil. Objective: To determine the population structure, reproductive period, patterns of growth and distribution of size classes among sexes in a population of the prawn A. scabra in the De Contas River, Bahia, Brazil. Methods: Individuals were sampled in a period of one year by passing sieves through marginal vegetation and using dragnets. In the laboratory, we recorded the sex of the individuals and measured them using a pachymeter with 0.001 mm precision. The dimensions measured were CL (carapace length), TL (total length) and CW (carapace width). In order to analyze data, linear models for the relationships CL × CW were constructed and the type of allometry for each sex was determined. Individuals were gro...

The present work aims to investigate size vs. weight relationship and the condition factor of the crab Goniopsis cruentata (Latreille, 1803) (Grapsidae). The study area was the Mundau/Manguaba Estuarine Complex, Maceio, Alagoas, Northeast Brazil. Collections were monthly accomplished from August 2007 to July 2008. A total of 626 individuals were analyzed, being 309 males and 317 females. The males were larger and heavier than the females, what is expected in many brachyuran. The growth was positive allometric to both males (b = 3.42) and females (b = 3.30), not obeying the “cube law”. The condition factor of female was higher than that of male crabs, probably due to the gonad weight of females. It also varied seasonally for both sexes, being higher in the autumn and in the winter in males, and autumn an...

The species were sampled, within a period of three years, in fifteen sites, manually and using drag nets. The organisms were tagged and fixed in 70% alcohol. Posteriorly, the material was sent to the research lab and identified. In order to analyse data, an analysis of variance with a posteriori multiple comparisons was carried out to test the null hypothesis that the diversity throughout the river is homogenous. A total of 3.103 individuals were sampled, comprising 10 families and 30 species. Was verified predominance of the family Palaemonidae in what touches abundance, s...

It is a very agile animal, but easily caught on the reefs at night using light attraction (Freitas & Santos, 2002). The crabs of the genus Plagusia can be often seen clinging on drifting debris, buoys, oil rigs and ship hulls (Alcock,

We sampled individuals from August 2019 to January 2020 in a reef environment and determined their body condition and diet diversity. In order to test our hypothesis that plastic retention in the foregut is able to decrease the condition factor, we compared it between contaminated and non-contaminated individuals. A correlation test of number of ingested plastic fibres against trophic diversity was made to corroborate the hypothesis that plastic ingestion modifies the feeding patterns. Our results demonstrated that contaminated individuals had lower body condition. Also, we confirmed that debris ingestion can influence feeding patterns. These outcomes were probably linked to starvation and nutrient loss effects. We discussed that this crab is a potential sentinel specie for addressing impacts of solid pollution and a candidate for monitoring plastic contamination in reef environments.

Here, we attempt to fill this gap by studying several aspects of its biology. We sampled P. depressa in the reefs of Coruripe, Brazil and investigated the sex ratio, body size, maturity, the allometric growth of the gonopod in males and of the abdomen in females, the reproductive effort, the breeding season and the influence of environmental variables. We found that 1) the sex ratio, overall, does not deviate from 1:1; 2) females (33.71±10.62 mm) are larger than males (30.45±9.94 mm; t 1,764 :-4.40, p<0.001); 3) males (23.42±0.24 mm) mature at smaller sizes than females (26.78±0.19 mm); 4) the growth of the gonopod is positive allometric in juveniles (slope = 1.66±0.04), but negative allometric in adolescents (0.93±0.02) and adults (slope = 0.86±0.03). In females, the abdomen undergoes a positive allometry in juveniles (slope = 1.74±0.04) and adolescents (slope = 1.97±0.09), but an isometric growth in adults (slope = 0.99±0.04); 5) the breeding period is continuous and not influenced by rainfall, water temperature and salinity; 6) egg mass strongly increases with body mass (slope = 1.56, R 2 =0.84, p<0.001).

The study area was considered by the literature as being rich in anthropogenic activities well known as important sources of pollutants to the environment like the sugarcane agro industry, which in the past used mercury fungicides on the sugarcane plantations. Mussel samples were manually sampled in the field by divers in dry and rainy periods and divided into distinct class sizes (15-20; 20-25; 25-30; 30-35; 35-40 mm). All the samples suffered digestion with strong acids mixture before mercury determination by ICP/AES (Varian, model Liberty II) with vapor generating accessory (VGA-77). The lowest average total mercury concentration was observed in the rainy period of August 2006 (132.4 ± 17.5 µg.kg-1) and the highest was observed in the dry period of March 2007 (202.4 ± 76.3 µg.kg-1). Although some variance on the average Hg concentrations was observed no significant statistical difference was observed between the dry and the rainy periods. On the other hand, a significant statistical difference was observed among the class sizes, where individuals of smaller sizes presented higher Hg concentrations when compared with the larger size classes in both of the studied periods.
