In this study, we did mesocosm experiments to examine the effect of litter supply on the dragonfly larvae community. Size and species composition of dragonfly larvae and presence / absence of chironomid, a food resource for dragonfly larvae, were also controlled in the experiment. The results indicated that the litter provide the hiding places for small larvae, and consequently extend the survival time of them. Therefore, the litter supply regulates the structure of the dragonfly larva community.

However, the ground assessment to obtain these indicators is limited by ocular estimation, which can be subjective. We introduced 3D data from terrestrial laser scanner to quantify forest structure. The 3D data is converted to voxels and different size of voxels is used for this study. The 0.125m of voxel size was the most accu rate within 10 m radius to estimate forest cover. With this resolution, an automatic method to identify forest strata was established from the vertical distribution of the voxels for temperate forest.

We also collected benthic invertebrates and grass seed samples at study sites in Feb. 200. The grass seeds was most abundant at the shallow riffle connecting to the inlet of a large pool. Meanwhile, chironomid larvae and pupae were most abundant at the shallow riffle below the outlet of a large pool. The dominant species of ducks were Anas poecilorhyncha,A. acuta and A. crecca. Main feeding sites of these three duck species were shallow riffles, but A. poecilorhyncha and A. crecca were densely congregated at the shallow riffle below the outlet of a large pool, whereas A. acuta densely congregated at the shallow riffle connecting to the inlet of a large pool. Therefore, it was supposed that the bate selectivity differs between these two groups of ducks. We suggest that the physical complexity of stream environment caused by presence or absence of artificial groundsill supports the complexity of species composition and the high density of ducks.

The causes of desertification was analyzed on the comparison between the desertification image and GIS-based thematic data and the results of interview to local people. The denuded area ratio of each village was related to the sand dune ratio. Desertification in this area was strongly affected by the activity of sand dunes. The revegetated area ratio had a close relationship with the cropland ratio. The development of cropland and the surrounding forestation contributed to revegetation of denuded area. Denuded areas were mainly distributed in the pastoral area. The highest relationship between the denuded area and the animal population was seen in the density of goats. The results of interview also showed that goat density was high in the denuded sites. Overgrazing by goat was considered to be the main factor of current desertifica...

After removing vegetation and litter, 6 decontamination and erosion control treatment plots were set. Though radioactive substance as decreased in the treatment plots at first, it became stopped later due to the development of vegetation. The downward movement of 1.5-8.6kBq/m 2 of radiocesium was observed in the test plots during 4 and half months. Almost radioactive substance moved downwards as the form of sediment and litter. It was effectively controlled by the combination of fence and permeable mat.
