borders. It will be argued how the process of militarization and its accompanying military
ideology has led to the normalization of the use of force, specifically unlawful force, against
asylum seekers at the Evros border and Aegean Sea. The use of force focuses on the
systematic practice of pushbacks and other forms of ill-treatment endured during pushback
operations. This has put human rights of asylum seekers at risk, such as the prohibition of
non-refoulement and the prohibition of inhuman and degrading treatment or torture, which
are protections guaranteed to asylum seekers under regional legal frameworks. The factual
situation of militarization, pushbacks, and the use of force are analyzed under the relevant
legal systems on the management of external borders and human rights with a focus on the
jurisprudence of the Court of Justice of the European Union (CJEU) and the European Court
of Human Rights (ECtHR). This thesis will investigate the militarization of Greek borders
and how this process has led to the normalization of the unlawful use of force. The purpose is
to understand, how has it been possible for the situation at Greek borders to develop where

method of border and migration management?
