Growth, yield and nutritional values of five tomato varieties grown in soil and closed soil less culture

The experiment was carried out at Biochemistry laboratory of Patuakhali Science and Technology University (PSTU), Bangladesh to find out a suitable variety for hydroponics culture. We used Hoagland solution as nutrient solution for hydroponics media preparation. Among two types of media the media of Hoagland solution shows good impact on growth and nutritional values of tomato plant than the plant cultivated in soil media. Among all the varieties highest plant height (91.33 cm), yield (4.6 kg /plant), fruit vitamin c content (31.6 mg/ 100 g), fruit protein content (10.8%) were recorded from the variety named Patharkuchi on hydroponics media. Effects of Soil and Closed Soilless System on Growth, Productivity, Fruit Quality, and Plant Mineral Composition of Zucchini Squash

Among soilless system jute fiber led to higher yield and good fruit quality compare to other substrates. The highest marketable fresh weight was observed in jute fiber, followed by coco fiber while the lowest yield was recorded in soil with a reduction of 22% compared to sales treatments. In soilless culture fruit ascorbic acid and protein content were high with 31 and 71% respectively compared to soil treatment. A study was conducted to analyze the physical quality and biochemical componentsat different stages ofmango cultivar "Amrapali".The study was conducted at the postharvest laboratory, Department of Horticulture, PSTU during the period from January to December 2015. Stage-1 was marked when the peel color was dark olive green and turning toyellow at the seedand the subsequent maturity stages determined at 2-days intervals as stage-2 was olive, stage-3 was apple green, stage-4 was brown, stage-5 was saddle brown and stage-6 was dark golden rod in color. At each maturity stages, physical (peel color, firmness and weight loss) and biochemical (anthocyanin content, titratable acidity, pH, total soluble solids, ascorbic acid, reducing sugar, non-reducing sugar and total sugar) maturity indices were determined. The pH (4.54), anthocyanine content (430 mg/100 g), TSS (24.33%), reducing sugar (7.56%), non-reducing sugar (5.84%) and total sugar (13.40%) were significantly highest at stage-6 (dark golden rod colour). The titratable acidity (0.30%) and ascorbic acid (25.29 mg/100 g) were significantly highest at stage-1 (dark olive green). Firmness decreased gradually with the advancement of maturation and flesh color turned dark olive green to dark golden rod. Total soluble solids were increased while TA was gradually decreased with increase of maturity. Dark olive greencolour stage (stage-1) is suitable for harvesting and transportation due to highest physical qualityand dark golden rod colour stage(stage-6) is suitable for consumption due to highest biochemical composition.

An experiment was conducted to identify the hydroponic culture based suitable media for the produ... more An experiment was conducted to identify the hydroponic culture based suitable media for the production of Zucchini Squash in the Biochemistry Laboratory, Patuakhali Science and Technology University, Dumki, Patuakhali, Bangladesh during 2014. Zucchini plant (Cucurbita pepo L.) were grown in closed soilless systems to determine the effect of four different hydroponics media on plant growth, yield and nutrient contents (fruit moisture content, ascorbic acid content on fruit, fruit protein content, protein content in leaves). Three types of substrates (coconut husk, jute, cotton) along with Hoagland solution were used in this experiment. Result revealed that media using Jute fiber showed significant effect on plant growth and nutritional values than the other media (media of cotton with Hoagland solution, coconut husk with Hoagland solution and only Hoagland solution). The plant grown using jute media showed the highest plant height (60.33 cm), number of leaves (17.33), yield (1.5 kg plant-1), fruit moisture content (97.33%), Ascorbic acid content in fruit (28.73 mg 100g-1), protein percentage in fruit (1.406%) and percentage (1.326%) in leaves than the other media. Therefore, with the controlled nutrient supply, less expense, less labor, no use of pesticides or fertilizer with controlled environment the use of jute fiber as a substrate with Hoagland solution can be an effective one.

Among four types of media, the media composed with Hoagland solution and jute fiber showed good impact on growth and nutritional values than the other three media (media of Hoagland solution with coconut husk, Hoagland solution with cotton and only Hoagland solution. It was revealed that the highest plant height, yield, vitamin C, fruit protein, fat and fiber content of all were related to media combination of jute fiber and Hoagland solution. Among all the verities, the highest plant height (106 cm), yield (5.3 kg plant-1), fruit Vitamin C content (64.54 mg 100 g-1), fruit protein (17.67 %), fat (5.2%) and fiber (7.9%) content was recorded from Patharkuchi tomato variety.

Flowers, leaves, fruit and stem of plants under jute fiber treatments shows highest concentration of K and P was significantly higher in soil than soilless treatments. The micronutrient concentrations (Cu, Fe, Mn, and Zn) of plants grown in soilless treatment were generally higher than those grown on soil in the different plant tissues. The growth, yield, fruit quality and nutrient uptake was much more satisfactory on plant growing under media using jute fiber, than the other media. With controlled nutrient supply, less expense, less labor, no use of pesticides or fertilizer with the controlled environment the use soilless system with jute fiber can be an effective one for growing squash over conventional soil culture. Our results also showed that soilless culture can improve yield (total, marketable fruit) fruit quality of zucchini squash in comparison with soil culture.

Among four types of media the media composed with Hoagland solution and jute fiber shows good impact on growth and nutritional values than the other three media (media of Hoagland solution with coconut husk, Hoagland solution with cotton and only Hoagland solution). The substrates were applied on five different tomato varieties where highest plant height, yield, vitamin C and fruit protein content were related to media combination of jute fiber and Hoagland solution. Among all the verities highest plant height (102 cm), yield (3.3 kg /plant), fruit vitamin c content (63.54 mg/ 100 g), fruit protein content (17.67 %) were recorded from the variety named Patharkuchi and media using jute fiber. Introduction Soil less cultivation allows that scope and now practiced all over the world (Van Os and Benoit, 1999; Van Os et al., 2002). Cultivation of plant without soil gives more products in less time, allows to growing plant more densely with balanced supply of air water and nutrient where the products are more resistant to diseases and natural or biological control can be easily employed to it. Moreover, soil born pests and diseases can be easily eliminated easily through the soil less cultivation. Specially, for the container mobility the pests and diseases are easier to get rid where we useless fertilizer and pesticide. Troublesome weeds can be avoided by this cultivation (Munoz et al., 2010). Various soil less culture practices with the substrate and nutrient solution, a number of substrates are used in hydroponics cultivation like saw dust, coconut fiber, oasis cubes, sphagnum peat moss, rice hulls, polyurethane, grow slabs, clay brix, lava rocks, LECA etc. A good substrate should have adequate mechanical properties, high porosity, ability to distribute consistent oxygen and water for activity, low soluble salts content with a pH between 5.0 to 6.5 and should be sterile and chemically inert. Soil less substrate originated from organic materials which would improve the product quality with health substance (Donnan, 1998). Tomato is a vegetable which is cultivated all over the world and a good source of Vitamin C, biotin, molybdenum, vitamin K and also a good source of copper, potassium, manganese, dietary fiber, vitamin A, B6 and E. Additionally, they are a good source of chromium, pantothenic acid, protein, zinc and iron. Tomatoes provided a unique variety of phytonutrients included carotenoids, flavonoids, glucosides and fatty acid derivatives. Vitamin C is water soluble and essential for our normal growth and tissues in all parts of our body. It's forms an important protein which are used to make skin, blood vessels, tendons, ligaments; heals wounds and form scar tissue repair and maintain cartilage, bones and teeth; and helps in the absorption of iron (Douglas et al., 2013). Vitamin C content in hydroponically grown fruit is higher than that of conventional tomatoes (Hallmannet al., 2003). This growing system also influences the nutritional value and phenolic compound content in tomato (Hallmann et al., 2012).

IONIC CONSTITUENTS OF SOIL IN SUNDARBANS MANGROVE FOREST AREAS OF SATKHIRA DISTRICT

A study was conducted during the period of July to December 2014 for assessing the ionic level of... more A study was conducted during the period of July to December 2014 for assessing the ionic level of soil in the selected areas (Burigoalini and Kadomtola ranges) of the Sundarbans Mangrove Forest of Bangladesh. The soils samples were analyzed in the and B. The study revealed that, all the soils at Burigoalini area were alkaline and moderately saline. The amount of both OM and N was found higher at higher EC levels. The concentrations of P, S Cu, Mn, Fe and B were found lower and K, Ca, Mg and Zn were found higher at higher EC levels. The soils were found alkaline and highly saline in Kadomtola area. The lowest EC was found at the highest pH level. The amount of both OM and N found poor in this region and comparatively higher at higher EC levels. The level of S and Fe was lower and K, Mg, P, Ca, Cu, Mn, Zn and B were found higher at higher EC levels in this region.

A study was conducted during July to December 2014 in the some selected areas of Sundarban at Sat... more A study was conducted during July to December 2014 in the some selected areas of Sundarban at Satkhira district and also laboratory analysis in the Department of Agricultural Chemistry, Patuakhali Science and Technology University, Patuakhali district of Bangladesh. The study designed to evaluate the amount of heavy metal accumulate by the selected mangrove plants viz. Goran (Ceriopsdecandra), Baen (Avicennia officinalis) and Passur (Xylocarpusmekongensis). Plant samples were collected from different specific spots of Burigoalini and Kadomtola ranges under Satkhira district of the Sundarbans. In the study, the concentration of Fe, Zn were increased and Cu and Mn were decreased with soil EC level. The uptake of Cu, Mn, Fe and Zn were at lower limits for all three plants. For Goran tree, the concentrations of Cu, Mn, Zn, Fe were varied from traces to 0.05, 1.13 to 3.51, trace to 0.05 and 0.296-0.982 mgKg-1 respectively. For Bain tree, the concentrations of Cu, Mn, Zn, Fe was varied from 0.046 to 0.10, 0.26 to 5.6, 0.05 to 0.72 and, 0.75 to1.13 mgKg-1 , respectively and the concentrations of Cu, Mn, Zn, Fe were varied from 0.03 to 0.07, 0.27 to 0.73, 0.02 to 0.07, 0.66 to 1.69 mgKg-1 , respectively for Passur.

A study was conducted to analyze the physical quality and biochemical componentsat different stages ofmango cultivar " Amrapali " .The study was conducted at the postharvest laboratory, Department of Horticulture, PSTU during the period from January to December 2015. Stage-1 was marked when the peel color was dark olive green and turning toyellow at the seedand the subsequent maturity stages determined at 2-days intervals as stage-2 was olive, stage-3 was apple green, stage-4 was brown, stage-5 was saddle brown and stage-6 was dark golden rod in color. At each maturity stages, physical (peel color, firmness and weight loss) and biochemical (anthocyanin content, titratable acidity, pH, total soluble solids, ascorbic acid, reducing sugar, non-reducing sugar and total sugar) maturity indices were determined. The pH (4.54), anthocyanine content (430 mg/100 g), TSS (24.33%), reducing sugar (7.56%), non-reducing sugar (5.84%) and total sugar (13.40%) were significantly highest at stage-6 (dark golden rod colour). The titratable acidity (0.30%) and ascorbic acid (25.29 mg/100 g) were significantly highest at stage-1 (dark olive green). Firmness decreased gradually with the advancement of maturation and flesh color turned dark olive green to dark golden rod. Total soluble solids were increased while TA was gradually decreased with increase of maturity. Dark olive greencolour stage (stage-1) is suitable for harvesting and transportation due to highest physical qualityand dark golden rod colour stage(stage-6) is suitable for consumption due to highest biochemical composition.

Among soilless system jute fiber led to higher yield and good fruit quality compare to other substrates. The highest marketable fresh weight was observed in jute fiber, followed by coco fiber while the lowest yield was recorded in soil with a reduction of 22% compared to sales treatments. In soilless culture fruit ascorbic acid and protein content were high with 31 and 71% respectively compared to soil treatment. The concentration of glucose, fructose and sucrose were significantly higher by 25, 32,114% respectively in soilless treatments than in soil. The concentration of N and Mg in leaves, stem, fruits, and flowers were significantly higher in soilless compared to soil. Flowers, leaves, fruit and stem of plants under jute fiber treatments shows highest concentration of K and P was significantly higher in soil than soilless treatments. The micronutrient concentrations (Cu, Fe, Mn, and Zn) of plants grown in soilless treatment were generally higher than those grown on soil in the different plant tissues. The growth, yield, fruit quality and nutrient uptake was much more satisfactory on plant growing under media using jute fiber, than the other media. With controlled nutrient supply, less expense, less labor, no use of pesticides or fertilizer with the controlled environment the use soilless system with jute fiber can be an effective one for growing squash over conventional soil culture. Our results also showed that soilless culture can improve yield (total, marketable fruit) fruit quality of zucchini squash in comparison with soil culture.

The experiment was carried out during November 2014 to March 2015 at biochemistry laboratory of Patuakhali science and technology university (PSTU), Bangladesh where we used Hoagland solution as nutrient solution and jute fiber, cotton (jhut), coconut husk as substrate. Among four types of media the media composed with Hoagland solution and jute fiber shows good impact on growth and nutritional values than the other three media (media of Hoagland solution with coconut husk, Hoagland solution with cotton and only Hoagland solution). The substrates were applied on five different tomato varieties where highest plant height, yield, vitamin C and fruit protein content were related to media combination of jute fiber and Hoagland solution. Among all the verities highest plant height (102 cm), yield (3.3 kg /plant), fruit vitamin c content (63.54 mg/ 100 g), fruit protein content (17.67 %) were recorded from the variety named Patharkuchi and media using jute fiber. Introduction Soil less cultivation allows that scope and now practiced all over the world (Van Os and Benoit, 1999; Van Os et al., 2002). Cultivation of plant without soil gives more products in less time, allows to growing plant more densely with balanced supply of air water and nutrient where the products are more resistant to diseases and natural or biological control can be easily employed to it. Moreover, soil born pests and diseases can be easily eliminated easily through the soil less cultivation. Specially, for the container mobility the pests and diseases are easier to get rid where we useless fertilizer and pesticide. Troublesome weeds can be avoided by this cultivation (Munoz et al., 2010). Various soil less culture practices with the substrate and nutrient solution, a number of substrates are used in hydroponics cultivation like saw dust, coconut fiber, oasis cubes, sphagnum peat moss, rice hulls, polyurethane, grow slabs, clay brix, lava rocks, LECA etc. A good substrate should have adequate mechanical properties, high porosity, ability to distribute consistent oxygen and water for activity, low soluble salts content with a pH between 5.0 to 6.5 and should be sterile and chemically inert. Soil less substrate originated from organic materials which would improve the product quality with health substance (Donnan, 1998). Tomato is a vegetable which is cultivated all over the world and a good source of Vitamin C, biotin, molybdenum, vitamin K and also a good source of copper, potassium, manganese, dietary fiber, vitamin A, B6 and E. Additionally, they are a good source of chromium, pantothenic acid, protein, zinc and iron. Tomatoes provided a unique variety of phytonutrients included carotenoids, flavonoids, glucosides and fatty acid derivatives. Vitamin C is water soluble and essential for our normal growth and tissues in all parts of our body. It's forms an important protein which are used to make skin, blood vessels, tendons, ligaments; heals wounds and form scar tissue repair and maintain cartilage, bones and teeth; and helps in the absorption of iron (Douglas et al., 2013). Vitamin C content in hydroponically grown fruit is higher than that of conventional tomatoes (Hallmannet al., 2003). This growing system also influences the nutritional value and phenolic compound content in tomato (Hallmann et al., 2012).

IONIC CONSTITUENTS OF SOIL IN SUNDARBANS MANGROVE FOREST AREAS OF SATKHIRA DISTRICT

A study was conducted during the period of July to December 2014 for assessing the ionic level of... more A study was conducted during the period of July to December 2014 for assessing the ionic level of soil in the selected areas (Burigoalini and Kadomtola ranges) of the Sundarbans Mangrove Forest of Bangladesh. The soils samples were analyzed in the and B. The study revealed that, all the soils at Burigoalini area were alkaline and moderately saline. The amount of both OM and N was found higher at higher EC levels. The concentrations of P, S Cu, Mn, Fe and B were found lower and K, Ca, Mg and Zn were found higher at higher EC levels. The soils were found alkaline and highly saline in Kadomtola area. The lowest EC was found at the highest pH level. The amount of both OM and N found poor in this region and comparatively higher at higher EC levels. The level of S and Fe was lower and K, Mg, P, Ca, Cu, Mn, Zn and B were found higher at higher EC levels in this region.

A study was conducted during July to December 2014 in the some selected areas of Sundarban at Sat... more A study was conducted during July to December 2014 in the some selected areas of Sundarban at Satkhira district and also laboratory analysis in the Department of Agricultural Chemistry, Patuakhali Science and Technology University, Patuakhali district of Bangladesh. The study designed to evaluate the amount of heavy metal accumulate by the selected mangrove plants viz. Goran (Ceriopsdecandra), Baen (Avicennia officinalis) and Passur (Xylocarpusmekongensis). Plant samples were collected from different specific spots of Burigoalini and Kadomtola ranges under Satkhira district of the Sundarbans. In the study, the concentration of Fe, Zn were increased and Cu and Mn were decreased with soil EC level. The uptake of Cu, Mn, Fe and Zn were at lower limits for all three plants. For Goran tree, the concentrations of Cu, Mn, Zn, Fe were varied from traces to 0.05, 1.13 to 3.51, trace to 0.05 and 0.296-0.982 mgKg-1 respectively. For Bain tree, the concentrations of Cu, Mn, Zn, Fe was varied from 0.046 to 0.10, 0.26 to 5.6, 0.05 to 0.72 and, 0.75 to1.13 mgKg-1 , respectively and the concentrations of Cu, Mn, Zn, Fe were varied from 0.03 to 0.07, 0.27 to 0.73, 0.02 to 0.07, 0.66 to 1.69 mgKg-1 , respectively for Passur.
