In recent years however the field has broadened to include human development early childhood education family studies and child welfare. The program of studies offered by the Department of Child Development at the M S University of Baroda reflects pressures for greater involvement of social scientists in policy making. Among the activities of the department are intervention programs targeted at improving the environment of disadvantaged children and their families. Other programs focus on prenatal care and education of mothers. Graduated of the child development program work in a diversity of settings--as university teachers researchers administrators child welfare workers counselors trainers consultants and writers. Secondary data on 200 infants (0-36 months) and their families were analysed. The data base included information on 51 environmental, familial, maternal and child related factors and 3 dependent variables, namely, child mortality, infant morbidity and nutritional status. Data on infant morbidity and nutritional status were analysed by age and gender. The analyses involved step-wise multiple regression and formulation and testing of the best fit predictor equation. Factors associated with child mortality presented the clearest picture in terms of maximum amount of variance explained with a minimum set of predictor variables (74 per cent of the variance explained by 11 variables). The crucial variables associated with child mortality and infant morbidity were related to feeding practices, family composition, mother's education or highest education in the family and immunisation.

These include the relevance of the search for psychological universals and related measurement problems, the use of a single nmodel of humanity as a template for norms and comparisons, and the observed contradictions between modal cultural characteristics and individual psychological expressions. The link between theory, research and application is another major concern, especially in the context of developing countries wherein resource constraints call for accountability in terms of social relevance and problem-solving orientation. Emphasis is also given to the possible contribution that indigenous psychologies can make by converging in the process of understanding how culture and individuals constitute each other in the course of development.

The observations highlight the universal features of play and also their cultural specificity conditioned by ecological factors, social class and gender. The ecological constraints of crowding, the high-rise buildings, unsafe streets, scarce open spaces, the preoccupation with the `idiot-box', all seem to conspire against the urban child's natural propensity to play with joyous spontaneity. On the flip side of the coin, of course, are the conscious endeavours by the urban community to recognize children's need for play and to create play environments in the form of parks, children's museums, play centres and the commercial `fun-worlds'. In such a context, what is most impressive and heartening is children's remarka...

Peers, with such a central role in Western adolescence, play a comparatively minor role in the lives of Arabic and South Asian adolescents. Emotional turmoil and individuation from family occur in some societies but not others. Adolescent sexual revolutions are sweeping through Japan and Latin America. In this book, scholars from eight regions of the world describe the distinct nature of adolescence in their regions. They draw on research to address standard topics regarding this age-family and peer relationships, schooling, preparation for work, physical and mental health-and show how these have a different cast across societies. As a whole, the book depicts how rapid global change is dramatically altering the experience of the adolescent transition, creating new opportunities and challenges for adolescents, parents, teachers, and concerned others.
