This program aims to find out effectiveness of using owl as biological control of rice field rat and compare them with other controls. The program is located in Bener village, Wonosari, Klaten. The method of the program are interview and observation. The result showed that the application of owl has not been use optimally. Making owl nest box that’s not according to the standard make owl reluctant to the owl nest that has been made. In addition, there is lack of public awareness of synchronously control, so it makes rat’s attack increase. Control of rat does not rely on owl as its predator, but it’s also combined with other controls like gropyokan, emposan, and toxic bait synchronously and continuously so it can achieve success in decreasing of development rice field rat.

Furthermore, owls (Tytonidae) play a role as potential predators to control rats, the major pest. Therefore, this study aims to observe the reproduction patterns, predation, and nesting behavior of Tyto rosenbergii. To achieve this, direct observation and the installation of a camera trap in the nest box was adopted. Furthermore, a predation test was carried out by feeding the owls with rats daily in a cage measuring 4m x 8m x 6m. The results showed that the number of eggs produced ranged from 2 to 6, with an average of 3.85. Also, the Percentage of hatching ranges between 0-100% with an average of 80.77%, and that of chicks that survive to the fully feathered is 51%. In addition, T. rosenbergii was able to prey on 1-4 rats per night, and its activity mostly occurs outside the cage than inside, except when they had a reproductive season.

This study aims to identify the number of individuals, attack frequency, damage to paddy and control efforts of bondol groups. There were three types of bondol groups, they were 256 scaly-breasted munia (Lonchura punctulata), 1.075 javan munia (L. leucogastroides) and 94 white-headed munia (L. Maja). There were 1.090 bondol recorded in Sawah Baru and 335 in Ciherang. At morning became the most frequent time to bondol in attacking paddy, as many as 97 times in Sawah Baru and 37 times in Ciherang. The number of damage paddy in Sawah Baru during the observation amounted 4,24%. The number of damage paddy in Ciherang during the observation amounted 4,05%. Losses suffered by farmers during the observation as much as IDR 2.500.325 million/ha in Sawah Baru and IDR 1.064.040 million/ha in Ciherang. Bondol bird control effort to tackle it's attack only performed in Sawah Baru, which is shaking bambo tied with plastic and shout...

Control of mice in the paddy ecosystem can be done by the Trap Barrier System (TBS). This study aims to evaluate the installation of the Barrier System in Bener Village, Wonosari District, Klaten Regency, Central Java. The study was conducted by the method of field observation, interviews, and literature studies. The results showed that the installation of the Barrier System in Bener Village was ineffective due to the lack of farmers' attention to the components of FFB and the lack of support from farmers. Currently, three species of rat pest that presence in human live is very annoying and causing damage, i.e. ricefield rat ( Rattus argentiventer ), house rat ( R. rattus diardii ), and tree rat ( R. tiomanicus ). Efforts to control the three rat species are often done using chemical control (rodenticides). The aims of this study are comparing the consumption of ricefield rats, house rats, and tree rats to rodenticide with brodifacoum active ingredient. Besides, the aim is to understand the effectiveness of these rodenticides to control the three rats’ species. The method used is multiple-choice test and bi-choice test for five days continuously using brodifakum and bait base (grain, rice, corn). After five days treatment, test rats will be re-tested for three days with grain fed, then will be used for further treatment, if in good health. Results obtained f...

The program aims to control rice field rats in Bener Village through a gropyokan. The Program began by gather Gapoktan leaders and farmers to explain the activities to be held. In the implementation of gropyokan combined with sulfur fumigation, a sequence of activities can eradicate or repel rats. Furthermore, socialization execute to farmers concerning the breed of rats and demonstration of fumigator. Restraint has been done in Gapoktan rice fields and is prospective as an example for other farmers in controlling rice field rat assaults. Keyword: fumigation, gropyokan, rice-field rat

Oil palm is one of the plantation commodities which has an important role in Indonesia's economy.... more Oil palm is one of the plantation commodities which has an important role in Indonesia's economy. Indonesia is the largest producer and exporter of oil palm in the world with its export value capable of supplying 55.78% of global consumption. Rats are wild animals that are important pests for human life, both in agriculture plantations and urban areas. Rats can damage crops at various stages of plant growth. This study was aimed to determine the species abundance of rats in oil palm plantations, calculate the severity of crop damage due to rats infestation. Three blocks of mature plants were used in OC and OH plantation blocks were used to calculated, crop damage caused by rats, Identify the species of rats, and estimated rats abundance. The results of these studies showed there were four species of rats found in the oil palm plantation, namely Rattus tiomanicus, R. tanezumi, Rattus sp, and Maxomys hellwaldii. However, only R. tiomanicus and R. tanezumi were dominant species. There were significant differences in the number of, sex, and body weight between R. tiomanicus and R. tanezumi. The OC 12 block had the lowest infestation intensity than the other blocks since it was well maintained. The OH 02 block had the highest infestation intensity, infestation area, and abundance due to a lack of maintenance.
