The social situation in Argentina from the perspective of middle-class women This paper analyses how a group of professional middle-class women from Buenos Aires, Argentina, has processed the social crisis that emerged at the end of the year 2001. This study extends another study, initiated in the year 2000 and continued in 2001-2002, where it was sought to find out how the serious created situation harmed people mentally and somatically, in order to understand how the imposed conditions effect at medium-term the way of thinking and interpreting the currently lived happenings, and how today the past occurrences are reinterpreted. The research originates in theoretic assumptions coming from sociology and psychology, making it is possible to understand the consequences operated in daily life environments, and analysing the individual interpretations on personal experiences, feelings and emotions.

Based on data collected through in-depth interviews and focus groups, situations of psychological and somatic vulnerability are discerned through the interpretation of experiences, feelings, and emotions. Transformations in the labor market in Argentina have been a determining factor as well as a consequence of the new economic model, and have caused the precarization of working conditions and of life in general. A degradation in the political apparatus, which causes great uncertainty, has exacerbated this situation. This situation, and the speed at which it has taken place, has generated negative consequences for the women’s subjectivity, demonstrated in a decline in self-esteem and an alteration in thought processes.
