The recurrent flooding during monsoon and subsequent waterlogging in the northern Bihar plains an... more The recurrent flooding during monsoon and subsequent waterlogging in the northern Bihar plains and the magnitude of losses due to these hazards indicate the continuing vulnerability of the region to flood and waterlogging. Management of floods and waterlogging hazards in highly flood-prone regions of India, including Bihar state has been largely response oriented with little or no attention to mitigation and preparedness. This paper presents a method for spatial, Geographic Information Systems-based assessment of flood and waterlogging vulnerability and risk in northern Bihar plains. Multitemporal satellite data was used to evaluate the area statistics and dynamics of waterlogging over the period from 1975 to 2008. The flood proneness is evaluated at district level with reference to flood inundation during a period from 1998 to 2008. Census data were used to examine the socio-economic characteristics of the region through computation of population density, cultivators, agricultural labourers, sex ratio, children in age group 0–6 years and literates. The geohazard map derived by combining area prone to waterlogging and flood inundation was multiplied with socio-economic vulnerability map to derive the flood-waterlogging risk map of the region. The result shows that flood and water-logging pose highest risk to the central districts in the northern Bihar plains with 50.95% of the total area under high and very high risk.
This research examines the spread of criminal behavior and hard drug consumption using a mathemat... more This research examines the spread of criminal behavior and hard drug consumption using a mathematical approach called cellular automata (CA). This CA model is based on two behavioral concepts. Firstly, peer association impacts criminal involvement. Secondly, addiction can heighten criminal activity. The model incorporates four types of actors who interact in a high-risk social community and one intervention method. The actors exert a social influence on each other by encouraging or discouraging drug use and criminal behavior. The intervention method called Incapacitation has a probabilistic impact on the individuals in the model. The results identify the threshold where positive influences on a population reduce the number of high-rate offenders in the community. These results are discussed to further the knowledge about the social influences in a high-risk community and how these influences can effect decisions on offender management. nine books and over 150 research articles. The spatial distribution of crime has been a long-standing interest in the field of criminology. ... more The spatial distribution of crime has been a long-standing interest in the field of criminology. Research in this area has shown that activity nodes and travel paths are key components that help to define patterns of offending. Little research, however, has considered the influence of activity nodes on the spatial distribution of crimes in crime neutral areas -those where crimes are more haphazardly dispersed. Further, a review of the literature has revealed a lack of research in determining the relative strength of attraction that different types of activity nodes possess based on characteristics of criminal events in their immediate surrounds. In this paper we use offenders' home locations and the locations of their crimes to define directional and distance parameters. Using these parameters we apply mathematical structures to define rules by which different models may behave to investigate the influence of activity nodes on the spatial distribution of crimes in crime neutral areas. The findings suggest an increasing likelihood of crime as a function of geometric angle and distance from an offender's home location to the site of the criminal event. Implications of the results are discussed.

Merton Council"s adoption team helped them through a vigorous assessment process and training which meant they quickly had their ideal children living with them.
