The original mentor was described by Homer as the "wise and trusted counsellor" who Odysseus left in charge of his household during his travels. In modern times, the concept of mentoring has found application in virtually every forum of learning. Greater use of communication technologies has provided significant opportunities for relationships to form and grow in digital environments and with the ease of linking dispersed individuals and groups using these technologies, opportunities for interaction and collaboration are extensive. This paper investigates the concept of collaborative mentoring in digital environments and explores strategies and technological tools for supporting and developing shared meaning and conducting rational discourse. The ascilite pilot Collaborative Community Mentoring Program (C²MP) is provided as an example. An early attempt at building a model for collaborative mentoring in digital environments is explored using an adaptation of a three-element Community of Practice framework, progress of the pilot mentoring program is reported and a process for evaluating the pilot is outlined.

Despite the disruptive changes driven by open publishing in scholarly communication, it is challenging to develop widely accepted methods for quality assessment and certification. Similar challenges exist in open education platforms like the massive open online course (MOOC). This work reviews four types of innovations in open publishing in terms of quality control, namely “light touch” peer review, post-publication assessment, social peer review, and open peer review. Synthesising the principles and strategies of these innovations, it discusses how they might be inspiring for developing solutions and models for MOOC assessment and credentialing. This chapter concludes by suggesting future research directions. It argues that the open initiatives are co-evolving with the “traditional” systems an...

However, online education, once seen as the domain of postgraduate and distance education, has been subsumed into undergraduate on-campus teaching. The authors present their own vignettes from the Faculty of Education Online Pedagogical Practices (OP2) report to illustrate best practice within courses and other projects managed by the Faculty, and conclude by providing a number of recommendations for future online practices at USQ.

In mid-2010 simple open ended questionnaires were circulated to mentors and selected staff members with whom mentors had been working to evaluate progress to that point. Responses indicated that the mentor positions had been well received and that mentors were able to offer timely and practical assistance with using ICT for learning and teaching. In some areas there was evidence of a sustainable culture of sharing ideas about ICT use developing and some indications of increased acceptance of new ICT for learning and teaching. Mentors generally reported that the CoP was helpful in sustaining their roles and for sharing ideas. Interviews with a selection of mentors and mentees were conducted in late 2010 to gauge the effect of the project. The interviews have been transcribed but analysis of the data is yet to be completed. Overall the project appears to h...

I drew on my doctoral research into transformative learning and my experience as an online educator to design and facilitate the course. My interest in transformative learning emerged from a serendipitous incident which occurred in the early stages of my doctoral study in 2000. On a whim, I attended a Transformative Learning conference in the USA and found myself surrounded by positive, supportive, enthused educators - for me a transformative ...

It briefly describes a course being trialled at The University of Southern Queensland in terms of history, student population, aims and content and then discusses the computer mediated communication which has been set up to engender collaborative learning and support within an interactive distance learning system. The pedagogical principles underpinning the structure of the ...
