This study explores the cultural diversity-related challenges in the primary classrooms, examines... more This study explores the cultural diversity-related challenges in the primary classrooms, examines the reasons, effects of and solutions to these challenges, and identifies teacher profiles based on how they react to those challenges. Employing critical incident technique, we analyzed qualitative data from 650 primary teachers inductively. Results showed that primary teachers frequently faced challenges related to ethnicity, language, socioeconomic status and disability. The most salient challenges were identified as low academic achievement, student adaptation, bullying and challenges in implementing the curriculum. As a result of the analysis, three teacher profiles emerged as the strugglers, the dreamkeepers, and the color-evasive teachers.

Çalışmanın örnekleminin belirlenmesinde Uluslararası Öğrenci Değerlendirme Programı (Program for International Student Assessment, PISA), Uluslararası Matematik ve Fen Eğilimleri Araştırması (Trends in International Mathematics and Science Study, TIMSS) ve OECD Daha İyi Yaşam İndeksi (OECD Better Life Index) sonuçları dikkate alınarak Singapur, Çin, Güney Kore, Japonya, Kanada, İngiltere ve Danimarka ülkelerinin eğitim sistemleri küreselleşme bağlamında incelenmiştir. Araştırmada Bereday tarafından geliştirilen analitik karşılaştırmalı eğitim araştırma yöntemi benimsenmiştir. Araştırmanın bulguları Türkiye'nin küreselleşme sürecinde eğitimini geliştirmek ve iyileştirmek için önemli adımlar attığını ortaya koymuştur. Ancak yapılan düzenlemelerin daha kalıcı ve etkili olabilmesi için hangi eğitim basamağında olursa olsun ilgili konu alanı uzmanlarının görüşleri alınarak, değişikliklerin tüm eğitim basamaklarıyla koordinasyon içinde yapılması gerektiği belirtilmiştir. Ayrıca küreselleşme sürecinde her ülkenin kendi öz değerlerini ve özelliklerini göz önünde tutarak ve küresel gereklilikleri de dikkate alarak ilerlemesinin gerektiği vurgulanmıştır.

Pedagogical Formation Certificate Program is one of these applications used since 2010. When education research literature examined it can be seen that almost all of the studies were carried out with employed teachers. In contrast, there is any research to determine their awareness about problems in their professional lives with pedagogical formation program students who are prepared to be a teacher with very short program. However, gaining awareness about problems in professional life while a student is important to prevent potential problems or makes easier to solve them. In this context, this study aims to identify the problems that pedagogical formation program students will encounter with their professional lives and to question the contribution of the training they receive in the pedagogical program to the solution of these problems. Data of the study were collected in 2014-2015 Academic Year Fall Term with 12 volunteer Anadolu University Pedagogical Formation Program students through semi-structured interviews. As a result of descriptive analysis of the data students thought that they could have problem to provide classroom management and communicate with students effectively. In addition, lack of instructional materials and cooperation through colleagues, also differences of life style where they start to work and different political views among school management and teachers could cause problems. The majority of the students said that program does not have enough contribution at the point of solving these problems as expected especially because of the ineffective distance education part of it.

Student resistance is generally described as negative, rebelling and inappropriate behaviors. In order to provide effective learning and also to relieve given efforts, it is necessary to eliminate student resistance behaviors. Depending on this necessity, in order to determine students' resistance behaviors semi-structured interviews were carried out with 9 Primary School Education Program students taking 'Teaching Practice' course in 2008-2009 Spring Term. According to descriptive analysis of results, it was found out that the most common student resistance behaviors' are avoiding from joining lessons, not paying attention in lessons, ignoring the teacher and labeling his/her friends.

The main purpose of this study is to identify science teacher competencies based on science educa... more The main purpose of this study is to identify science teacher competencies based on science education expert opinions. For this purpose, Delphi technique, is one of the qualitative research techniques has been applied in this study. In the first round of Delphi technique, 13 lecturers who are experts in the field of science education took part. In the second round, two of the 13 lecturers and one of in the third round were separated from the group. In the first round of the Delphi technique, open-ended questions sent to the expert group which were created after a detailed literature review. As a result of the reviewing national and international scientific publications, 10 categories have been identified: general competencies related to the science curriculum, competencies related to the elements of the curriculum (aim, content, learningteaching processes, assessment and evaluation), competencies to develop students learning domains (cognitive, affective, and psychomotor), competencies in instructional technologies and communicational competencies. Each identified category was transformed into an openended question. Descriptive analysis was applied for the qualitative data. As a result of the analysis, a 5-point Likert-type questionnaire consisting of 172 items in 10 categories was prepared. The questionnaire was sent to the experts in the second round. The experts indicated their participation levels for each item. The data obtained at second round were analyzed by quantitative methods. In the third round, the results of the analysis from the second round were added to the experts and the participants were asked to re-evaluate their responses in the previous round. At the end of the third round, 161 competencies statements were reached under 10 competencies areas.

Depending on this necessity, in order to determine students' resistance behaviors semi-structured interviews were carried out with 9 Primary School Education Program students taking 'Teaching Practice' course in 2008-2009 Spring Term. According to descriptive analysis of results, it was found out that the most common student resistance behaviors' are avoiding from joining lessons, not paying attention in lessons, ignoring the teacher and labeling his/her friends.

The main purpose of this study is to identify science teacher competencies based on science educa... more The main purpose of this study is to identify science teacher competencies based on science education expert opinions. For this purpose, Delphi technique, is one of the qualitative research techniques has been applied in this study. In the first round of Delphi technique, 13 lecturers who are experts in the field of science education took part. In the second round, two of the 13 lecturers and one of in the third round were separated from the group. In the first round of the Delphi technique, open-ended questions sent to the expert group which were created after a detailed literature review. As a result of the reviewing national and international scientific publications, 10 categories have been identified: general competencies related to the science curriculum, competencies related to the elements of the curriculum (aim, content, learningteaching processes, assessment and evaluation), competencies to develop students learning domains (cognitive, affective, and psychomotor), competencies in instructional technologies and communicational competencies. Each identified category was transformed into an openended question. Descriptive analysis was applied for the qualitative data. As a result of the analysis, a 5-point Likert-type questionnaire consisting of 172 items in 10 categories was prepared. The questionnaire was sent to the experts in the second round. The experts indicated their participation levels for each item. The data obtained at second round were analyzed by quantitative methods. In the third round, the results of the analysis from the second round were added to the experts and the participants were asked to re-evaluate their responses in the previous round. At the end of the third round, 161 competencies statements were reached under 10 competencies areas.

Arastirmanin evrenini, 2014-2015 egitim-ogretim yilinda, Kutahya il merkezindeki ortaokullarda ogrenim goren toplam 25.157 ortaokul ogrencisi olusturmaktadir. Orneklem buyuklugu % 95 guven duzeyi icin 378 olarak hesaplanmistir. Arastirmada veriler “Ogrenci Algisina Gore Ogretmen Etik Degerler Olcegi (OEDO)” ile toplanmistir. Arastirmada ortaokul ogrencilerinin algilarina gore ogretmenlerin etik degerlerini belirlemek amaciyla betimsel istatistikler kullanilmistir. Karsilastirmalar icin ise t testi, tek yonlu varyans analizi (ANOVA) ve Mann Whitney U testi kullanilmistir. Ogrencilerin algilarina gore, ogretmenlerin etik degerlere uyma duzeylerinin yuksek oldugu sonucuna ulasilmistir. Karsilastirmalardan elde edilen sonuclara gore, ogretmenlerin etik degerlere uyma duzeyleri, genel olarak ogrencilerin “cinsiyetlerine; siniflarina; basarilarina; okulda yoneticiler, ogretmenler ya da ogrenciler tarafindan kucuk dusurulen, dislanan ogrenciler olup olmadigina iliskin goruslerine; ailelerinin kendileriyle iletisim kurarken kullandigi dile iliskin goruslerine; ogretmenler tarafindan basarili kabul edilen, sevilen, takdir edilen bir ogrenci olarak gorulup gorulmediklerine iliskin goruslerine; okulu, yasantilari acisindan mutlu olunan bir ortam olarak gorup gormediklerine iliskin goruslerine” gore anlamli duzeyde farklilasmaktadir.
