The Supervisory Working Alliance Inventory (Trainee and Supervisor versions) was used to measure the working alliance, and the Internalized Shame Scale was used to measure supervisee shame-proneness. Repeated measures analysis of variance revealed a lack of concordance between perceived alliance strength of supervisors and supervisees (F(1,29) = 12.70, p = 0.0013). No differences in alliance ratings were found in relation to shame-proneness. Implications for supervision are discussed.

The Outcome Questionnaire (OQ- 30.2: Lambert, Finch, Okiishi, & Burlingame, 2005) was used to measure mental health. Of the 13 clients who participated in career counselling sessions, 8 were found to have experienced a “recovery” (30.8 %) or “improvement” (30.8 %) in mental health, while no change was experienced by the other 5 (38.5 %).

The study used a mixed research method. Using a quasi-experimental approach, quantitative data were collected by way of questionnaires measuring self-efficacy, job retention, and self-esteem. The data were collected before the SA process, and again 2 weeks and 3, 6, and 12 months after the process. Qualitative data on the results of the process were collected at research interviews with participants and from process documents (portfolio, psychometric tests, interview summaries). Finally, triangulation of the results allowed the identification of effective interventions. The study’s evidence-based results validate the effectiveness of a skills assessment and development process in businesses. This type of process is useful to the employees, which ...

A total of 283 clients seeking individual career counseling completed the WAI-S at the end of the first session (T1). Of the 283 clients, 217 also completed the WAI-S at the end of the third session (T2). Confirmatory factor analyses were performed to assess the fit of one-factor, two-factor, three-factor, and bilevel hierarchical models. The results showed that the three-factor and the bilevel hierarchical models had the best fit to the data at both T1 and T2. The factor structure of the WAI-S was invariant across the first and the third career counseling sessions. Results suggest that researchers and clinicians can use the WAI-S knowing that...

Participants were 111 university students (83% women) who participated in individual career counseling sessions at their university. All participants completed the French version of the Outcome Questionnaire-30.2 (OQ-30.2; Lambert, Finch, Okiishi, & Burlingame, 2005) immediately before the 1st session (pretest) and at the beginning of the last session (posttest). The OQ-30.2 assesses 3 client life domains: subjective discomfort, problems in interpersonal relationships, and problems in social role satisfaction. Using Jacobson and Truax's (1991) statistical approach to assessing clinical change, the authors compared clients' pretest OQ-30.2 scores with their posttest scores. Among clients with a "dysfunctional" score (n = 59) at the study's inception, 34% recovered and 14% improved, whereas 41% of clients with functional scores (n = 52) at the study's inception improved. The results suggest that individual career counseling can make a difference in the lives of many clients; they also highlight the importance of further outcome research that accounts for possible variability in clients' responses to career counseling.

This study examined the impact of intervention components and working alliance on the decrease of career decision-making difficulties. Participants were 114 university students who received an average of 3.17 sessions of naturally occurring career counseling. Results indicated that four intervention components significantly predicted the change in the overall level of career decision-making difficulties. These intervention components are written exercises in-session (occupational analyses), individualized feedbacks on career choice, occupational information in-session about career options, and dealing with career-related barriers. Working alliance significantly moderates the effects of both individualized feedbacks and written exercises on the change in the overall career decision-making difficulties. More specifically, the effects of individualized feedbacks and written exercises on total career decision-making difficulties were significant only when working alliance was either average or high.

Participants were 111 university students who received an average of 3.19 sessions of naturally occurring career counseling. Results indicated that: (a) written exercises in-session, individualized feedback and working alliance significantly predict change in psychological distress; and (b) effects of both career intervention components and working alliance on psychological distress were mediated by change in career indecision.

A longitudinal design was employed to measure alliance ratings and perceived session impact of 43 counselor trainees undergoing a 5-session supervision process. Analysis of covariance revealed a significant relationship between supervisee shame-proneness and supervisory working alliance F (4, 126) = 3.38, p = .0116. Independent samples t-tests revealed high shame-prone supervisees rated significantly lower impact t (41) = 2.53, p = .02, d = 1.1. Implications for the practice of supervision are discussed.
