The destination for plastic waste is mostly in landfills. In the case of Indonesia, the Makassar landfill, the largest landfill in the eastern region of Indonesia, has exceeded its capacity and is currently mixed and buried without treatment (open dumping). The main aim of this study is to identify potential plastic waste buried in the landfill. Sampling was conducted at three landfill locations: location 1 is a non-active landfill zone that is no longer used, and locations 2 and 3 are active landfill zones that are still in operational use. The sampling method uses a Hydraulic Rotary Drilling Spindle, with a drilling depth of 0-18 meters for location 1, 0-17 meters for location 2, and 0-13 meters for location 3. The research results show that at location 1, plastic waste contributes to approximately 31% of the total waste in this old landfill zone, including plastic bags and beverage bottles. Meanwhile, at location 2, approximately 22% of plastic waste was found, and at location 3, about 14%. Testing the calorific value of plastic waste gave an average of 29,862 MJ/ton. The plastic waste found in these landfills has the potential to be recycled but requires intensive cleaning processes. Furthermore, this plastic waste can also be utilized as an energy source due to its relatively high calorific value.

The island is inhabited by a small population but is frequented by tourists to enjoy nature and fishing. The coastline is in the form of cliffs and sandy beaches, but there is much marine debris on the sandy beaches. In addition, its location allows waste from the surrounding area to be carried by currents to this island. This research examines the diversity of categories and types of macroplastic litter trapped on the sandy beach of Ainoshima Island. Survey transects were conducted in the spring of 2023 via visual observation based on a survey method developed by NOAA in 2012. The survey results were then categorized based on a photo guide database from the OSPAR Maritime Area for Active Monitoring of Marine Debris on the Beach. Data on the types of waste found are divided into artificial polymer materials (plastic), rubber, cloth, paper/cardboard, processed/finished wood, metal, glass, and ceramics. As a result, the plastic category is the dominant category of the total type of waste trapped in sandy beach areas.

Indonesia is a developing country with many coastal settlements, such as Makassar City. This study aims to determine Waste Management on the coast of Makassar City, namely the "Kawasan Pelabuhan", a slum settlement. An investigation was carried out regarding waste generation, storage, and collection. The population of this study was 119 houses/households consisting of permanent and semi-permanent houses partially built over the sea on the coast. The method used in this research is quantitative and qualitative. The analysis results show that the volume of waste generated is around 58% organic and 42% inorganic, with an average of 1.8 kg per household for organic waste and 1.31 kg for inorganic waste. Most houses use individual bins; only houses on the main road get communal collection and storage services.

A total of nineteen elemental components have analyzed (i.e Ag, Al, B, Ba, Ca, Cd, Co, Cr, Cu, Fe, K, Mg, Mn, Na, Ni, Pb, Si, Ti, and Zn). The elemental components were found in descending order; Ca > Si > Na > Al > Fe > K > Mg > Zn > Ti > Pb > Ni >Mn> Ba > Cu > Cr > B > Ag > Cd > Co. Four ionic species (i.e Cl-, NO3-, SO42-, NH4+) have analyzed, The ionic species were found in descending order; SO42- > NO3- > Cl- > NH4+ as well as black carbon were founded in the sample was 2.01 µg/m3. The elemental enrichment factors indicated that most of the elements were enriched relative to soil origin illustrating of their possible associations with other sources such as marine and anthropogenic derived aerosols.

The samples were collected on a weekly basis within a period of one year from February 2012 to January 2013. Results showed that the mean concentration of PM10 black carbon was 2.01±0.93 μg/m, while ionic species concentrations were found in descending order; SO4>NO3>Cl>NH4, with mean concentrations of 1.44±1.04 μg/m, 1.11±1.06 μg/m, 0.87±0.91 μg/m, 0.49±0.64 μg/m, respectively. Black carbon concentration was higher during the dry months, which may be attributed to uncontrolled biomass burning during hot and dry weather conditions. Similarly, SO4 and NH4 concentrations were higher during the dry month seasons. On the contrary, Cl concentration was higher during the wet months, influenced by the marine environment surrounding the area.
