The school of modernity has the function enable understanding of practices and production of text... more The school of modernity has the function enable understanding of practices and production of texts composed of many languages (or modes, or semiosis), since it is through these students to inform and communicate in their daily tasks. Thus, the performance of that function is linked to the introduction of new at this institution and other genres of discourse present in the lives of these individuals, as well as other and new media and social movement technologies. But as important as the availability of these cultural objects is the use of didactic proposals that are consistent with this new paradigm of education. Our goal with this article is to report one such proposal made with poems by Jose Paulo Paes (2005) that were set to music by musician and composer Paul Bi (2005), which was designed for students of 3rd year of a public school of Uberlândia-MG. We will make a cut here because the research is in progress at the Institute of Literature and Linguistics (ILEEL) of the Federal U...

Development of new pathologic concepts and immunohistochemical techniques has provided a fresh understanding of these lesions, and, as a result, they can be unified into two distinct pathologic groups: Wegener's granulomatosis and non-Hodgkin's T-cell lymphoma. We retrospectively reviewed the imaging studies and pathologic specimens of seven patients with prior diagnoses included in the midline destructive disease group. The specimens were reviewed by an oral pathologist using currently accepted pathologic criteria and the newly available immunohistochemical markers CD20, CD45, and CD45RO. Lesions were classified as non-Hodgkin's T-cell lymphomas when positive for CD45 and CD45RO and negative for CD20, and as Wegener's granulomatosis in the presence of noncaseati...

It features as Primary Payload (PP) a high-resolution optical payload with one 2.5 meter resolution panchromatic channel and four 10 meter resolution visible/near infrared spectral channels. It is based on a twin Korsch telescope concept, each telescope covering half of the instrument's swath width. In this communication is presented a detailed account of the work performed to accurately characterize and correct by post-processing an image ghost present in the multi-spectral channels of the primary payload. The work reported here includes the description and analysis of the results of three test campaigns, performed at Thales Alenia Space. Tests carried out include radiometric tests at focal plane level, generic stray-light tests and a novel test to characterize specifically the parameters of the studied cross-talk image ghost. Field-dependent point spread functions for the studied image ghost have been generated by optical analysis, and have been adjusted with the results of the performed tests. From these, image filters have been devised to reproduce, and remove by subtraction, the image ghost. Quantitative image ghost correction results on an actual test image are shown.

The aim of this study was to characterize a bacteriocin produced by Pediococcus pentosaceus SB83 for vaginal application, to prevent colonization of pregnant women with L. monocytogenes. Bacteriocin SB83 showed inhibitory activity against L. monocytogenes (serotypes 1/2a 1/2b and 4b) but did not inhibit vaginal lactic acid bacteria. Additionally, bacteriocin SB83 inhibited the growth of Enterococcus faecalis, Enterococcus faecium and Bacillus subtilis. Bacteriocin SB83 was produced at maximum levels between 24 h and 36 h of growth (6400 AU/mL against serotype 1/2b and 4b, 3200 AU/mL against serotype 1/2a). Significant reduction in antimicrobial activity was observed after treatment of cell-free supernatants with proteinase K, pepsin, papain and trypsin. Bacteriocin SB83 was resistant to treatments with Tween 80, Tween 20, Triton X-100, SDS and EDTA. This bacteriocin was stable at pH values between 4 and 6.5; a decrease in activity was observed at pH 2 and above 8. A decrease in antibacterial activity was recorded at 100 ºC and 121 ºC. In the range 4 ºC to 80 ºC, antimicrobial activity was not affected. The activity of bacteriocin did not change in simulated vaginal fluid (pH 4.2, 5.5 and 6.5). The molecular size of bacteriocin SB83 was between 3.5 and 6.5 kDa.In conclusion, the bacteriocin produced by P. pentosaceus SB83 has been proved to be resistant to several conditions, including conditions in the vaginal tract (pH and components of vaginal fluid).

Component TdVIII, with 56 amino acid residues and mol. wt 6140 was the most toxic by i.p. injections into mice and had an intracisternal LD50 of 7.9 micrograms protein/kg body weight. Amino acid compositions of components TdIV and TdV were very similar, suggesting that they could be highly homologous proteins, although presumably contaminated one by the other. A fifth component, named TdIII, non-toxic by i.p. injections, was also isolated in homogeneous form. The i.v. and intracisternal LD50 values of the whole T. discrepans venom were 2.5 mg/kg and 16.0 micrograms/kg, respectively.

Two sets of tests are described in the paper, one performed in two dimensional configuration in which the shelter effect of several barriers with different heights and porosities is evaluated. In the other the effect of wind direction is considered using a tridimensional model. Wall shear-stress measurements performed with a hot-film sensor allowed the characterization of the transport properties of fine particles of coal. By integration of the local wind properties the rates of pollutant emission were determined leading to the conclusion of an effective shelter action of the porous wind breakers.

Methods and Results: Thirty-five isolates of Pediococcus spp. showed bacteriocinogenic activity against Listeria monocytogenes and the ability to survive in simulated vaginal fluid (SVF) at pH 4Á2. One isolate of Pediococcus spp. was selected and characterized to evaluate its safety before the use as vaginal probiotic. Pediococcus pentosaceus SB83 did not show the presence of virulence factors such as the production of gelatinase, lipase and DNase, haemolytic activity, nor the presence of virulence genes (genes esp, agg, gelE, efaAfm, efaAfs, cylA, cylB and cylM). Pediococcus pentosaceus SB83 was considered sensitive to chloramphenicol, gentamicin, streptomycin, kanamycin, erythromycin and ampicillin. This strain was considered resistant to tetracycline and vancomycin. Pediococcus pentosaceus SB83 was a biofilm producer at different pH values (4Á2, 5Á5 and 6Á5) in SVF and in de Man, Rogosa and Sharpe medium. Conclusions: The in vitro results provide a basis for the use of P. pentosaceus SB83 as a vaginal probiotic, to prevent colonization by L. monocytogenes in pregnant women. Significance and Impact of Study: The application of vaginal probiotics could have the potential for preventing vaginal infections and consequently reduce abortion and neonatal infections.
