A Vane Rheometer for Fresh Mortar: Development and Validation

This paper presents the development of a vane rheometer to estimate mortar plastic viscosity and ... more This paper presents the development of a vane rheometer to estimate mortar plastic viscosity and yield stress. The rheological parameters were developed from measurements using a procedure to convert the vane torque and rotational velocity data into shear stress versus shear rate relationships. The used procedure considered the locally sheared material as a Bingham fluid and computed the characteristic shear rate from Couette analogy. The apparatus was tested with three experimental programs in which many rheological parameters of mortar compositions were calculated. The obtained results validated the rheometer test procedure and confirmed that the test results are reproducible.

However, its durability under humid environments is low. Stabilization using cement, lime and natural fibres could enhance its durability and lowers the risk of cracking. This paper presents an experimental investigation into the performance of stabilised local soil by either, cement mixed with a proportion of granulated blast furnace slag (GBFS) /or straw naturel fibres. Unconfined compressive strength (UCS), shrinkage, wetting and drying, capillary absorption and thermal conductivity tests were performed on both untreated soil samples and stabilised soil samples. The results show that stabilising the soil with cement and GBFS increased both compressive strength, durability, thermal conductivity and decreased the capillary absorption and the shrinkage. The addition of natural wheat fibres increased the capillary absorption but leads to a decrease in the thermal conductivity and to a further reduction in the shrinkage and hence a better insulating less prone to cracking material.

The search for more sustainable construction materials, capable of complying with quality standar... more The search for more sustainable construction materials, capable of complying with quality standards and current innovation policies, aimed at saving natural resources and reducing global pollution, is one of the greatest present societal challenges. In this study, an innovative recycled aggregate concrete (RAC) is designed and produced based on the use of a coarse recycled aggregate (CRA) crushing concrete with electric arc furnace slags as aggregate. These slags are a by-product of the steelmaking industry and their use, which avoids the use of natural aggregates, is a new trend in concrete and pavement technology. This paper has investigated the effects of incorporating this type of CRA in concrete at several replacement levels (0%, 20%, 50% and 100% by volume), by means of the physical, mechanical and durability characterization of the mixes. The analysis of the results has allowed the benefits and disadvantages of these new CRAs to be established, by comparing them with those of a natural aggregate concrete (NAC) mix (with 0% CRA incorporation) and with the data available in the literature for concrete made with more common CRA based on construction and demolition waste (CDW). Compared to NAC, similar compressive strength and tensile strength values for all replacement ratios have been obtained. The modulus of elasticity, the resistance to chloride penetration and the resistance to carbonation are less affected by these CRA than when CRA from CDW waste is used. Slight increases in bulk density over 7% were observed for total replacement. Overall, functionally good mechanical and durability properties have been obtained.

Mechanical characteristics and durability properties of blast furnace slag cement composites larg... more Mechanical characteristics and durability properties of blast furnace slag cement composites largely depend on the hydraulic activity of the slag. In this paper, a Granulated Blast Furnace Slag with a low reactivity index is used in modifying mortar composition. Microstructure and durability of mixes containing 0%, 30% and 50% of slag as substitution to OPC are respectively compared and analyzed. Water porosity, Mercury Intrusion Porosity and pore size distribution are studied after 28, 90 and 360 days of wet curing. A qualitative microstructure analysis of mortars is proposed with Scanning Electron Microscope (SEM). The durability of mortar is evaluated through capillary water absorption and chloride diffusion tests. The results indicate a finer porosity and lower water absorption for slag mortars at old ages (90 and 360 days). Moreover, lower chloride diffusion for 50% blast furnace slag substitution is observed.

These methods, though being favorably not invasive and easy to be extended to a larger number of elements, are affected by many contingency factors. The SonReb technique suggests combining the two methods to partially offset their low reliability if considered separately. For years, this concept was introduced in order to improve the evaluation compared with the use of one NDT. In order to combine the ultrasonic pulse velocity and rebound hammer, many empirical, multiparametric models were proposed in the literature as linear, power, exponential, or polynomial. Les mortiers a base de ciment au laitier presentent une resistance a la compression relativement faible a jeune âge mais reste relativement comparable, aux âges avances, a celles du mortier sans ajout. Par ailleurs, la presence du laitier, notamment a un taux de 50% dans le beton conduit a une diminution de l?absorption d?eau par capillarite. Aussi, une amelioration de la permeabilite a l?eau des betons contenant 50% de laitier a ete observee par rapport a celle du beton sans ajout, pour un faible rapport Eau/liant (E/L).

This process is divided into three main steps, data collection (using nondestructive testing and destructive testing), model identification and strength assessment. Three estimation quality levels (EQL) are defined depending on the targeted accuracy of strength assessment, based on three parameters, mean value of strength and standard deviation of strength on a test region and local value of strength. All the necessary definitions (test location, test reading, test region, test result, …) are given and the different stages of data collection, i.e. planning, NDT methods, cores (dimensions, conservation, location, testing, etc) are described. The identification of the conversion model is detailed and a specific attention is paid to the assessment of test result precision (TRP). For the identification of the model parameters, two options are considered either the development of a specific model or the calibration of a prior model. A specific option is also proposed, namely the bi-objective approach. Finally, the quantification of the errors of model fitting and strength prediction is described. Generally, core tests are the most reliable and effective method for assessing the quality of concrete. Unfortunately, this type of testing is expensive and time consuming and only a limited number of cores can be carried out in practice. Non-destructive tests (NDT) can be used to overcome these drawbacks. The most popular and widely used NDT methods for assessing concrete strength are rebound hammer (RH) and the ultrasonic pulse velocity (UPV). Désordres dus à l'infiltration des eaux Cas de la ville d'El-Affroun Résumé Des désordres ont été... more Désordres dus à l'infiltration des eaux Cas de la ville d'El-Affroun Résumé Des désordres ont été constatés dans plusieurs édifices publics dans une ville au sud d'Alger. Cet article présente une description de ces désordres et de leurs causes probables. Les études géologique, hydrogéologique et géotechnique ont montré que la région de la ville est géologiquement stable et le sol est de bonne résistance. La cause principale des désordres est liée à l'infiltration des eaux dans les sols argileux provenant des pluies et des réseaux d'assainissement défectueux. La présence d'arbres et arbustes très proches des constructions ainsi que le manque de dallage périphérique autour des bâtiments ont contribué à l'accélération de ces désordres.

Corrosion of reinforcing steel bars in concrete is one of the main causes of early deterioration ... more Corrosion of reinforcing steel bars in concrete is one of the main causes of early deterioration and reduction of service life of reinforced concrete (RC) structures. This paper reports on the results of an experimental programme that was carried out to study the effect of reinforcement corrosion on the serviceability behaviour of RC beams under load. The main parameters investigated were the effects of reinforcement arrangement and the magnitude of the sustained load. Four series of scaled beams were tested, each series containing six beams, three of which were subjected to reinforcement corrosion while the other three were used as un-corroded control beams. All these beams carried the same sustained load during the process of reinforcement corrosion. The reinforcement arrangement for the fourth test series was identical to the first series but these beams carried a higher sustained test load. All the beams were subjected to a four-point bending load arrangement. Corrosion of the tension reinforcement was accelerated using an impressed current while the soffits of the beams were immersed in a 3% sodium chloride solution. The evolution of reinforcement corrosion and central deflection under simultaneous load and corrosion is given. The deflections of the beams increase with progressive corrosion of the reinforcement especially during the early stages of corrosion as a result of propagation of transverse cracks and the expansive stresses induced by the corrosion products. The importance of the arrangement of the steel in the section of concrete on the performance in terms of deflection was also clarified.

Plusieurs causes de dégradation sont à l'origine des anomalies observées sur les structures en bé... more Plusieurs causes de dégradation sont à l'origine des anomalies observées sur les structures en béton. Ces causes sont dues à l'instabilité de l'ouvrage, la fatigue des matériaux, l'excès de charges, les agressions environnementales et le changement climatique. Pour y remédier à ces défauts, il faut tout d'abord procéder, au diagnostic de l'ouvrage dégradé, à la détermination des causes des anomalies des défauts, à la préconisation des méthodes de réparation et/ou renforcement et au suivi de son comportement dans le temps. Dans cet article, le suivi de comportement dynamique d'un château d'eau renforcé, par application en confinement des composites collés est présenté. Ce suivi consiste à une analyse dynamique, par application de la méthode des éléments finis (MEF), avec un modèle choisi par le logiciel commercial `'Ansys`'. Les résultats trouvés (modes propres et fréquences propres), avant et après renforcement, ont montré l'avantage des composites CFRP sur le comportement dynamique de la structure du château d'eau. Le gain apporté par l'application de ces composites varie entre 25% et 35%, ce qui donne une opportunité à l'utilisation des CFRP pour ces cas de structures à renforcer.

In this study, we investigated a concrete repair material and its preparation method as well as its application in concrete repair engineering. Advanced sensing instruments were used to detect the health of concrete. The repair material has the combined characteristics of concrete, polymer elastomer, exothermic material, and heat-change material, namely, excellent early strength performance, UV light resistance, and repair strength.

The evolution of reinforcement corrosion and central deflection under simultaneous load and corrosion is given. The deflections of the beams increase with progressive corrosion of the reinforcement especially during the early stages of corrosion as a result of propagation of transverse cracks and the expansive stresses induced by the corrosion products. The importance of the arrangement of the steel in the section of concrete on the performance in terms of deflection was also clarified.

Ces causes sont dues à l'instabilité de l'ouvrage, la fatigue des matériaux, l'excès de charges, les agressions environnementales et le changement climatique. Pour y remédier à ces défauts, il faut tout d'abord procéder, au diagnostic de l'ouvrage dégradé, à la détermination des causes des anomalies des défauts, à la préconisation des méthodes de réparation et/ou renforcement et au suivi de son comportement dans le temps. Dans cet article, le suivi de comportement dynamique d'un château d'eau renforcé, par application en confinement des composites collés est présenté. Ce suivi consiste à une analyse dynamique, par application de la méthode des éléments finis (MEF), avec un modèle choisi par le logiciel commercial `'Ansys`'. Les résultats trouvés (modes propres et fréquences propres), avant et après renforcement, ont montré l'avantage des composites CFRP sur le comportement dynamique de la structure du château d'eau. Le gain apporté par l'application de ces composites varie entre 25% et 35%, ce qui donne une opportunité à l'utilisation des CFRP pour ces cas de structures à renforcer.

In this study, we investigated a concrete repair material and its preparation method as well as its application in concrete repair engineering. Advanced sensing instruments were used to detect the health of concrete. The repair material has the combined characteristics of concrete, polymer elastomer, exothermic material, and heat-change material, namely, excellent early strength performance, UV light resistance, and repair strength.
