Rapid urbanization of the cities and increase in a number of mega cities has made the entire urban management complex. With many parameters involved in it, urban data has started to resemble the characteristics of big data. The nexus between spatial cognition and the frequency of data collection of an urban system explains the role of big data analysis in performance monitoring of the urban systems. Urban data collection and analysis can be possible through participatory planning and participatory citizens. This chapter focuses on understanding the correlation between spatial cognition and participatory planning.

A settlement's growth can either be a planned or a biological process. With cities in today's context, whose power lies in financial ability, aim at economic growth which results a change in demographic distribution across its region. A rapid urbanization indicates a country's economy in its developing stage towards a modernized and a matured one, with a regulating plan for urbanization avoids imbalanced distribution of man power and uneven development across the country. Modernism hasn't just brought institutional and sociological evolution in human society but has also brought cultural change. Industrialization and the automobile revolution have made man dependent on machines, and the influence is reflected in his ecosystem. Cities grew to accommodate automobiles, and today, car dominance is affecting the urban environment in terms of health and social interaction in urban open spaces. The car-free city is a new concept that every city has to adopt for a better tomorrow. The study focuses on different topological parameters of car-free cities and identifies different parameters to be considered while developing a conceptual framework towards a car-free urban environment.
