The excessive dependence on pesticides and fungicides to protect the crops from various pathogens... more The excessive dependence on pesticides and fungicides to protect the crops from various pathogens and pests has caused irreparable losses to our land and water resources in addition to severe degradation of soil quality and beneficial soil micro-flora. In this chapter, we have focused on the use of neem and its products in agriculture to curb and mitigate the losses caused by chemicals which have been used indiscriminately and incessantly since past decades. Synthetic pesticides enable safer control of pest population but these neem-based products come with few challenges as well like short shelf life, photosensitivity, and volatilization which causes hindrance in their application at commercial level.

Cultivar-specific soil microbial communities with respect to their taxonomic structure and specific function have not been investigated explicitly in improving the adaptation of lentil cultivars under rice-fallow ecology. The present study was carried out to decipher the rhizosphere microbiome assembly of two lentil cultivars under rice-fallow ecology for discerning the diversity of microbial communities and for predicting the function of microbiome genes related to nitrogen (N) and phosphorus (P) cycling processes deploying high-throughput whole (meta) genome sequencing. The metagenome profile of two cultivars detected variable microbiome composition with discrete metabolic activity. Cyanobacteria, Bacteroidetes, Proteobacteria, Gemmatimonadetes, and Thaumarchaeota were abundant phyla in the “Farmer-2” rhizosphere, whereas Actinobacteria, Acidobacteria, Firmicutes, Planctomycetes, Chlo...

In case of ornamental crops, the progress made in transgenic breeding is not that impressive like in cereals, pulses and vegetables, but the initiatives taken and advancements made have implicated the bright future of this technology in ornamental crops. Improved morphology, flower colour, resistance and fragrance are some of the desired novel traits in ornamental crops where transgenic approaches need to intervene. Transgenic breeding in major cut-flower crops like rose, chrysanthemum, gladiolus and carnation has provided avenues for incorporation of novel traits in other ornamental crops as well and has made such crops an ideal target for application of other advanced technologies.

Rice (Oryza sativa L.) genome contains about 40 GLP family member proteins in nine chromosomes. Although some of the rice GLP (OsGLP) promoters have been studied through in silico analysis as well as experimentally, studies regarding the distribution pattern of the biotic and abiotic stress associated transcription factor binding sites (TFbs) in the promoter regions of OsGLP genes have not been attempted thoroughly. Several transcription factors (TFs) namely NAC, WRKY, bHLH, bZIP, MYB and AP2/ERF act as major TFs concerned with biotic as well as abiotic stress responses across various plant species. In the present study the in silico analysis was carried out using the 1.5 kilobases (kb) promoter regions from 40 different OsGLP genes for the presence of NAC, WRKY, bHLH, bZIP, MYB and AP2/ERF TFbs in it. Among various OsGLP gene promoters, OsGLP8-11 was found to contain highest number of tested TFbs in the promoter region whereas the promoter region of OsGLP5-1 depicted least amount of TFbs. Phylogenetic study of promoter regions of different OsGLP genes revealed four different clades. Our analyses could reveal the evolutionary significance of different OsGLP gene promoters. It can be presumed from the present findings as well as previous reports that OsGLP gene duplications and subsequent variations in the TFbs in OsGLP gene promoter regions might be the consequences of neofunctionalization of OsGLP genes and their promoters for biotic and abiotic stress tolerance in rice.

In such systems customer satisfaction strongly depends on factors like delivery time and quality of product/service provided. In order to achieve this, it becomes essential to perform proper planning of resource

Since every vehicle entering service centre has different service and repair needs, it closely resembles job shop system. In the situations of complex decision domain, even an abstract solution of the decision problem is difficult to achieve. For such cases, analytic network process (ANP) is considered as an attractive multi criteria decision making tool. The objective of this paper is to select the best operational strategy in order to improve the performance of the job shop under study using ANP. The results from the study indicates that in order to improve its performance, attention should be given to improve the skills and behaviour of employees; which in turn improves the customer satisfaction leading to the improved business results. A case of automobile after sales service network is taken as an example for illustration of the proposed model.

One of major factors to sustain the growth is its efficient after-sales service network. The Automobile Service Centre (ASC) has large product variety as every vehicle has different repair or service needs. Owing to large variety of vehicles with different service requirement, the management of expensive spare parts is major challenge in efficient management of ASC. Inventory models have been used in past to determine the optimal inventory levels and reorder quantity but these models only consider the inventory carrying cost and ordering cost. The decision, in present context, is also influenced by size of service centre, criticality of item, unit price, etc. In this paper, ANN is used in two phases: first to determine the inventory policy and then to determine the parameters of the policy by taking the real case of an ASC in a metropolitan city.

Al... more The current growth of the service sector in global economies is unparalleled in human history. Along with pure service sectors like health, education, transport, the manufactured product also requires an efficient service network to take care the needs of after sales service of the product. In automobile sector, the after sales service is as big as the manufacturing sector. In order to spur the growth of automobile sector, it is required to have efficient after sales service network. For improving the performance of after sales service system, it is required to study the impact of varying levels of design parameters and to find the factor level combination that could yield near optimal shop performance. This paper presents a framework based on Taguchi experimental design for studying the impact of varying levels of decision and system parameters on the performance of automobile service centre. The study will help the managers in setting the priorities to focus on the assumed variables and also in highlighting likely factor level combination that would result in near-optimal shop performance.

After sales service plays vital role in industries to achieve customer satisfaction and retention... more After sales service plays vital role in industries to achieve customer satisfaction and retention and acts as relevant source of revenue. Automobile service centre (ASC) involves the activities related to repair and service operation after purchase of car. ASC is a complex system with features of job shop production, service management, maintenance management and supply chain management. ASC has to provide good repair and service with on time delivery and at competitive price. To achieve this, proper design and planning of capacity is of prime importance. This paper presents the impact of capacity planning on the performance of ASC and then capacity planning schedule of ASC is done to meet the existing demand. The measures for meeting the changing demand are also suggested. Performance measurement under varying demand is studied. Since real life systems are very complex, simulation is used as the tool to study the dynamics between capacity and performance.
