C'est à l'Académie de Saumur avant 1662 que les futurs épistoliers se lièrent d'amiti... more C'est à l'Académie de Saumur avant 1662 que les futurs épistoliers se lièrent d'amitié ; les 51 lettres commentées ici furent écrites entre 1662 et 1669. Elles permettent de découvrir un moment particulier du protestantisme français où la piété de ces jeunes hommes ne les empêchait pas de courir après les plaisirs et d'envisager un avenir autre que celui qui leur était réservé. Trois métaphores récurrentes de la lettre (sermo absentium, entretien, commerce), peu originales en soi, nous introduisent dans l'imaginaire sentimental et savant de ces épistoliers. Bien qu'il s'agisse d'une correspondance passive (seules les lettres de Richier nous sont parvenues), il est possible d'y percevoir la saveur d'une amitié interrompue mais renouée dans la maturité.

The word confiance, as the French Protestant Elie Neau uses it in his letters, prayers and hymns ... more The word confiance, as the French Protestant Elie Neau uses it in his letters, prayers and hymns written in captivity, is linked to notions of faith and trust in God, with whom Neau enjoys an I~Thou relationship that is the source of his confidence (assurance), in the contemporary sense of the word, and the site where his selfhood is affirmed and legitimated. This paper studies the way this relationship is mediated by Scripture experienced as Word, but moves into mystical transport that is not just union but also ineffable fusion with the divine; furthermore, it also outlines how Neau's resistance to the forces that oppressed him was fed by a meditation on the Passion of Christ that ironically owed much to Catholic popular devotion of the time.

On the margins of society: those who wrote memoirs usually did so from exile, from prison, because they had fallen from grace into disgrace, or because they had come to a crisis point in their lives. On the margins of history: memoirs and their writers had a conflictual relationship with the official history of their time, which they set out to contradict, correct, or amend with their own story, their own outsider (yet also, insider) point of view. Memoir writing is a literature of testimony, which points to a tension between individual experience and culturally sanctioned narratives. Thus, to write memoirs in the early modem period is to perform an act of inscription that is always political. It is an act of resistance to the tendency of cultures to remember and forget in partisan fashion, which exposes that tendency by inscribing other experiences and voices into the collective mem...

The first three are theological: mystical union correlates with several Reformed theological themes; Ambrose consistently holds a balance between Word and Spirit, creating a biblical theology of experience, a development of a sanctified reading of Scripture, and an experience of the fullness of God; and Ambrose teaches a theology of intentionality, including the cultivation of solitude and other spiritual practices. The last four themes identify the spiritual practices that can best be derived from these earlier theological foundations: retrieve Ambrose’s encouragement that people share their spiritual practices with one another; recover a contemplative attitude and piety; cultivate a biblical integration of contemplation and action; and finally, challenge contemporary people to develop a language of delight and enjoyment in their experiences of God. This book will immediately appear on my reading lists for its historical, theological, and mystical teaching as well as Isaac Ambrose’s major works. My Protestant students often have little or no familiarity with their own spiritual and mystical traditions, which they need if they are going to be effective in responding to the spiritual hunger within the congregations they will serve.

Author of the Dictionnaire historique et critique, defender of toleration in his Commentaire philosophique, and indefatigable critic of superstitions of all kinds, Bayle's influence as a man ofletters and an unquiet intellectual is substantial and well-documented. His letters, beginning in his early twenties, reveal that he was ever anxious to establish what was then called a 'commetce de lettres' with anyone, but particularly learned men (the prejudice of the time made learned women a rarity) who could furnish him with news: news of battles during Louis XIV's European wars; news of the latest books; news concerning the nobility, the court and the petty nobility of all the regions of France, but notably of his own comte de Foix. La lettre, datée du 25 mai 1693, que le forçat protestant poitevin, René Barraud, sieur de La Can... more La lettre, datée du 25 mai 1693, que le forçat protestant poitevin, René Barraud, sieur de La Cantinière, envoya de la galère la Perle, amarrée à Marseille, au pasteur Jean de La Place, sieur de La Sauvagerie, réfugié à Rotterdam, est souvent citée par les historiens, mais toujours d’après la transcription de Jules Bonnet, publiée dans le BSHPF en 1866. Il s’agit d’une transcription tronquée qui fausse le sens de la lettre autographe, conservée dans la Collection Antoine Court de la Bibliothèque de Genève. En restaurant des passages supprimés, cette édition critique intégrale avec commentaire replace cette lettre dans son contexte d’origine, ce qui permet de souligner sa dimension collective, et d’exposer des aspects de l’expérience des protestants aux galères occultés par la transcription de Bonnet.

Sous le règne personnel de Louis XIV, de 1680 à 1715, 35 000 hommes furent condamnés aux galères,... more Sous le règne personnel de Louis XIV, de 1680 à 1715, 35 000 hommes furent condamnés aux galères, dont 4 % étaient des forçats protestants, soit quelques 2000 hommes selon les estimations de Pierre Rolland 1. Les délits imputés aux protestants, et qui les rendaient passibles à perpétuité de cette peine afflictive et infamante, étaient essentiellement de trois ordres. Ils étaient accusés de délit de fuite, de délit d'assemblée, et enfin, « du port d'armes » contre leur roi légitime, surtout à partir de 1702 lorsqu'éclata en Cévennes la guerre des Camisards 2. Dans les trois cas, il s'agissait d'actes criminels ou rendus tels par l'édit de Fontainebleau du 17 octobre 1685, qui révoqua celui de Nantes. De nos jours, on pourrait estimer les tentatives de fuite et les cultes clandestins moins graves que la résistance armée (et sur celle-ci les avis des protestants, voire des galériens eux-mêmes, étaient très partagés), mais, à la Révocation, comme on sait, les réformés furent frappés d'une double interdiction : interdiction de tout exercice religieux d'une part, et, d'autre part, interdiction de quitter le royaume. Par conséquent, même ceux qui n'agissaient qu'en fonction de « cette malheureuse liberté de conscience », pour reprendre l'expression de l'évêque de Comminges (Gilbert de Choiseul du Plessy-Praslain) 3 , même ceux-là, s'ils étaient pris en flagrant délit, basculèrent dans l'infamie. « Nous étions des criminels d'État », dit Jean Marteilhe, ce fils d'une honnête famille de Bergerac, arrêté, emprisonné et condamné aux galères le 22 novembre 1701, parce qu'il avait été appréhendé « sur les frontières sans passeport » 4 .

A l'égard de la Réforme , l'idéalisme premier de Bayle semble avoir progressivement cédé le pas à la déception. Cependant sa désillusion n'est pas assimilable à de l'incroyance. Bayle paraît avoir voulu croire à la Réforme dans son image idéale , tout en critiquant son développement ultérieur. Il faut candidement et de bonne foy, recognoistre le bien qui est aux adversaires, et le mal qui est en ceux que Ton suyt. Hors le noeud du debat et le fonds, il faut garder equanimité et indifference, et n'allonger point sa choleře au delà des affaires. However, the arrival of French Protestants on a large scale took place in four successive waves: from 1662, after the Restoration; in 1681 and 1685, following the dragonnades in Poitou and the Revocation of the Edict of Nantes, respectively; after 1691 in the wake of the English Revolution of 1688 and the decisive victory of the forces of William III in Ireland over the Jacobite cause; and finally in 1752, as a result of a campaign in the Languedoc to enforce Roman Catholic baptism on those who continued to worship clandestinely as Protestants. However, the arrival of French Protestants on a large scale took place in four successive waves: from 1662, after the Restoration; in 1681 and 1685, following the dragonnades in Poitou and the Revocation of the Edict of Nantes, respectively; after 1691 in the wake of the English Revolution of 1688 and the decisive victory of the forces of William III in Ireland over the Jacobite cause; and finally in 1752, as a result of a campaign in the Languedoc to enforce Roman Catholic baptism on those who continued to worship clandestinely as Protestants.
