Proposed hydrographic survey system based on the use of Unmanned Aerial and Maritime systems provides functionality to conduct hydrographic measurements and environment monitoring. System can be easily adapted to fulfil marine safety and security operations, e.g. intrusion threat monitoring, hazardous pollutions monitoring and prevention operations, icing conditions monitoring.

Trinitrotoluene (TNT), a commonly used explosive for military and industrial applications, can ca... more Trinitrotoluene (TNT), a commonly used explosive for military and industrial applications, can cause serious environmental pollution. 28-day laboratory pot experiment was carried out applying bioaugmentation using laboratory selected bacterial strains as inoculum, biostimulation with molasses and cabbage leaf extract, and phytoremediation using rye and blue fenugreek to study the effect of these treatments on TNT removal and changes in soil microbial community responsible for contaminant degradation. Chemical analyses revealed significant decreases in TNT concentrations, including reduction of some of the TNT to its amino derivates during the 28-day tests. The combination of bioaugmentation-biostimulation approach coupled with rye cultivation had the most profound effect on TNT degradation. Although plants enhanced the total microbial community abundance, blue fenugreek cultivation did not significantly affect the TNT degradation rate. The results from molecular analyses suggested the survival and elevation of the introduced bacterial strains throughout the experiment.

The object of the study is a newly built multipurpose catamaran type research vessel, meant for geological and biological researches. The vessel reaches its full speed by using only 70% of total engine power. Further increase in power leads to hardly noticeable increase in speed. Vibration appears additionally in the wheelhouse area. This leads to study possible causes of negative propulsion effects. A hull form study and its optimization were taken as one of possible solutions. Traditional and standard series analysis methods of resistance evolution were not appropriate. The study was carried out using the method of successive approximations and computational fluid dynamics (CFD) algorithms. The flow lines around the hull of the vessel were analyzed and the optimal solution was chosen. Water resistance analysis was carried out to prove the efficiency of the chosen optimization decisions.

Shipbuilding is known as one of the oldest, most open and highly competitive markets in the world... more Shipbuilding is known as one of the oldest, most open and highly competitive markets in the world. Although shipbuilding industry has a big experience in how to survive over peaks and slumps of economy, the current global crisis hit shipbuilding industry rather severely. The global order book over the past 6 quarters since the end of 2008 was 4.5 times lower than that for the 6 previous quarters. In 2009, the portfolio of new orders of European shipyards was almost 4 times lower than in 2008. With such a decline, the world's shipbuilding industry is certainly among the sectors worst affected by the financial and economic crisis. It can have the most painful impact on many shipbuilding countries of the world due to the biggest overcapacity of shipyards ever seen and far greater supply of fleet than required by the market. Not all lessons were learnt from historical development of the shipbuilding industry. Until the middle of the last century, European shipbuilding dominated the world. Fast growth of the Japanese economy and successful coordination of supporting program for shipbuilding as a strategic industry helped to win leadership for this country. For some time, Japan and Europe controlled 90% of the market, but gradually dominance was overtaken by Japan. In 1970s, S. Korea following previous experience of its neighbour country announced shipbuilding as strategic industry and in combination with low labour costs began to reach the leadership. Next Asian player, China, caught the industrial expansion strategy and surpassed Japan in 2006 and S. Korea in 2009 (if measured by order book volumes). New shipbuilding entrants such as Vietnam, India, Turkey, the Philippines, Brazil, and Russia grew up and together reached the quantity of orders to equal European total. Europe has gradually been losing its positions in shipbuilding despite of its strategic specialization as a niche player. Unfair competition on the part of Asian shipyards and delayed agreements in global playing field have distorted the market, shifted it to the Far East and created extra problems fighting against crisis. In September 2008, the new building boom that ran since 2003 ended sharply. The crisis didn't have pity neither for leaders nor for ordinary players. Even at the end of 2010, despite the signals of economic recovery, order book for new building was decreasing continuously. By the end of September 2010, new global building portfolio was 26% smaller in comparison to the quantities of the same period in 2008. Good news is that the total number of contracts in 2010 was higher by 205% than in 2009. Shipyards should begin thinking about new orders by investigating new patterns for successful competition.

Increasing cargo volumes demand for a greater number of ships for transportation and expanded navigation geography as well as result in increased amount of discharged ballast water. Consequently, sea water pollution is increasing and invasive microorganisms appear that the existing flora and fauna are unaccustomed to. In order to protect territorial waters from these invasive species, International Maritime Organization (IMO) requirements have been implemented that regulate the quality parameters of discharged ballast water from ships. This problem has become particularly relevant for operational ships, in which ballast water treatment equipment and technical solutions had not been anticipated in the design stage. This article provides a comparative analysis of the treatment equipment of ballast water and the related technical parameters, in order to distinguish the most important equipment criteria. A Carrier, according to its technical characteristics, was analysed together with the water treatment method for operated bulk. An expert evaluation for the characteristics of the technical equipment was established.

This study presents innovative methods for solving practical challenges that occur during the ope... more This study presents innovative methods for solving practical challenges that occur during the operation of heavy diesel engines (DEs). The novelty of the method arises from the combined use of an artificial neural network, a single-zone DE combustion mathematical model, and data from real operation conditions. Using the proposed method, DE transient mode energy efficiency has been analysed, and the primary influencing factors have been identified: qcycl and dqcycl/dt. The adequacy of the method has been tested for CAT3512B-HD series engines installed on freight locomotives. The difference between the model results and experimental data has been 3–4%. CAT3512B-HD series DE transient operation studies have shown that at the low-load range of qcycl (up to 36% of nominal), the fuel consumption during transient operation increases by 10% compared to steady state operation. The aim of the presented research was to assess the NOx emission and dispersion from marine ships... more The aim of the presented research was to assess the NOx emission and dispersion from marine ships in Klaipeda sea port. NOx emissions from ships operating in Klaipeda sea port were calculated using the Lloyd's Register detailed ship movement method, after collecting the information about technical characteristics of each marine ship visiting the port and the time spent staying in the port. After calculating the emission, the modelling using AERMOD software was completed and the dispersion of pollutants over different seasons of the year was determined. When performing the evaluation of NOx emissions it was estimated, that most of these pollutants enter the atmosphere from stationary vessels moored to quays with active auxiliary motors; this accounts even for up to 72% of the total NOx emission from marine ships in Klaipeda port. In this study, we have investigated the efficiency of transport diesel engines CAT3512B-HD in tra... more In this study, we have investigated the efficiency of transport diesel engines CAT3512B-HD in transient braking and acceleration modes in 2M62M locomotives. A comparative analysis of the diesel engine performance has been performed at speeds of power increase and braking ranging from 4–5 kW/s to 17–18 kW/s. A decrease in the fuel economy occurred, and the main reason for it (compared with the steady-state operating condition at qcycl = idem) has been found to be the deterioration of the mechanical efficiency coefficient due to the loss of the additional equipment kinetic energy of the engine. The efficiency decreased by 3–3.5% under power increase operations and by 10–14% in the braking modes. The efficiency was assessed based on the excess power (Ngen.) of a free turbine, operated with the inflow of gaseous nitrogen, which was used to generate electricity. A mathematical model and simulation of the regenerative cycle were created and adjusted to operate with a dual-fuel (diesel-liquid natural gas (LNG)) six-cylinder four-stroke engine, where the energy of the exhaust gas was converted into mechanical work of the regenerative cycle turbine.
