It pays particular attention to describing the relations with the Albanian authorities, especially the Institute of Monuments, and reviews how conservation of this UNESCO World Heritage Site proceeded during the unstable decade following the end of communism in 1991/2. The history also sets out the detailed work undertaken each year by the Foundation until it handed over operations to Albanian conservators and their support staff that the Foundation had helped to train.

RIGHT Pan, as depicted on the bronze statuette found as a gun battery was being constructed on Mount Mile in 1981. The god is shown with a bearded human face, discrete horns, and goat legs. He is pouring oil from an alabastron. Mount Mile overlooked the ancient city of Butrint, which features in the story surrounding the god's demise.

Archaeological prospection methods, such as Unmanned Aerial Vehicle (UAV)-based remote sensing, ground-penetrating radar (GPR), and photogrammetry, have made it possible to better study the landscape with respect to not only the changes the area has undergone recently, but also its evolution during the Roman and Medieval periods, while keeping the main communication route represented by the Tiber river as its fulcrum.

The archaeology indicates that this was the homestead of the archon who was known to have been living at Butrint in AD 881. On the basis of the evidence found in the excavations, it would therefore appear that this central place was the home of a powerful individual(s), and belongs to the category of settlements described by Paul Magdalino in his groundbreaking review of the aristocratic oikos. 2

Sarah, it seems certain, would have wished to put this collection into a wider Mediterranean and European context. In fond memory, this short essay attempts to do what she would have done with more knowledge and flair.
