Methods Studies were identified from searches in ERIC, PubMed, SPORTDiscus, and Web of Science databases. Primary source articles, relating PE classes and CRF, published up to July 2019 in peer-reviewed journals were eligible for inclusion. Specific inclusion criteria were: (a) having cross-sectional or longitudinal and observational or interventional study designs; (b) targeting school-aged children or adolescents; (c) measuring CRF, heart rate or CRF test results as an outcome; (d) having statistical analyses of the CRF, heart rate or CRF test results outcomes reported; (e) focusing on PE classes or PE interventions that did not extended time or frequency of the classes; and (f) published in English, French, Portuguese, or Spanish. Results A total of 24 studies met the inclusion criteria. Overall, 10 studies have found a neutral effect of PE classes in students' CRF, eight studies found that PE indeed contributed to the improvement of CRF and six studies revealed mixed findings, when PE classes where controlled for others variables (e.g. body mass index, intensity). Higher intensity PE classes consistently demonstrated contributions to improving students' CRF. Conclusion Review findings suggest that PE classes can contribute to the improvement of students' CRF. Intensity, age and weight status were identified as potentially relevant factors for promoting CRF in PE classes. To improve CRF, higher intensity classes should be provided.

However, a growing body of literature suggests that physical activity either had no effect on academic performance or that it enhanced it. Objective: The purpose of this report is to perform a systematic review of the evidence on the associations between physical education and school-based physical activity, and academic performance. Design: Systematic review. Methods: Studies were identified through research of the PubMed, Sportdiscus, and Web of Science databases from 2000 through 2016. The titles and abstracts were screened for eligibility, the methodological quality of the studies was rated, and data was extracted. The main exposure was physical education or school-based physical activity. For the main outcome, studies had to report at least one academic performance measure. Results: A total of 12 articles met the inclusion criteria; four of them were cross-sectional, two longitudinal, two quasi-experimental and four interventional studies. Seven articles found a positive association between physical education or school-based physical activity and academic performance, four found no association and in one there was a positive association for 3 rd grade students and a negative association for 2 nd grade students. Conclusion: In general, results of the review support that physical education or school-based physical activity is positively associated with academic performance in children.

From a public health perspective, the study of socio-demographic factors related to physical activity is important in order to identify subgroups for intervention programs. Objective. This study aimed to identify the prevalence of, and the socio-demographic correlates related to, the achievement of recommended physical activity levels. Methods. Using data from the European Social Survey round 6, physical activity and socio-demographic characteristics were collected, in 2012, from 39,278 European adults (18,272 men, 21,006 women), aged 18-65 years, from 28 countries. The question of meeting physical activity guidelines was assessed using World Health Organization criteria. Results. A total of 64.50% (63.36% men, 66.49% women) attained physical activity recommended levels. The likelihood of attaining physical activity recommendations was higher in the 55-64 years age group (men: OR = 1.22, p < 0.05; women: OR = 1.66, p < 0.001), among those who had secondary educatio...
