Dianne is a performer, choreographer, camera operator, video editor and educator. She works in both live and screen contexts. Dianne completed a Master of Arts in Dance on Screen in 2001 and her dance video works have screened internationally. From 2004-2006 she was Artistic Director of Dancehouse before receiving an Asialink Performing Arts residency to India in 2006 at Darpana Academy of Performing Arts. Dianne has worked as a lecturer in contemporary dance and dance video at Deakin University since 1996, where she completed a PhD in 2016. In mid 2018 she completed the dance documentary “Nothing but bones in the way” about her collaboration with Melinda Smith, which won the Best Dance Film award at the 15th Annual ReelHeART International Film and Screenplay Festival in Toronto in July 2019. Her most recent solo performance work “Cabin Fever” (2019) received 5 star reviews and won the Adelaide Fringe Bank SA Weekly Award for Best Dance at both the 2019 and 2020 Adelaide Fringe Festivals. She is currently an independent dance and video artist based in Adelaide, South Australia.

A site-specific solo dance work created and performed by Dianne Reid. The work interacts directly... more A site-specific solo dance work created and performed by Dianne Reid. The work interacts directly with the audience who must move in and around the dance action in intimate and non-traditional performance locations. The dancer creates the performance in real-time, improvising her movement and text in response to the location and the particular audience members she encounters there. The work also incorporates projected video imagery using the skin as projection screen, and a unique soundscape is created for each performance drawn from the music and effects library of SA composer Stuart Day

Scenes from another life is a solo performance about discrepancies in perception - between self-i... more Scenes from another life is a solo performance about discrepancies in perception - between self-image and an imagined self. In episodic shifts between stage space and screen space, this work tosses up the ghosts that haunt us, the events that adhere to our bodies and the images that stick in our heads. First presented at the Bodyworks Festival, Dancehouse in March 2003, Scenes is a reflection on my personal journey to this 'present' moment the ways in which my physical body is inscribed by and returns to images, sounds, actions, and emotions of my past. The issues of change and continuity are primary for artists working in dance. It is an emergent art form, one in constant flux as it shifts through and between bodies. It is also traditionally a young art form, its population constantly changing in preference of the 'newer model' and in danger of denying the richness of experience offered by its mature artists. However, dance also needs to embrace change by engaging with new technologies and media in order to connect with today's screen audiences and continue as an art form.

This paper is a conversation about building depth in our relationships with our bodies and our me... more This paper is a conversation about building depth in our relationships with our bodies and our meeting points with each other. Framed within the context of an improvisational dance practice, the authors, Dianne Reid and Melinda Smith, reflect upon their long-term shared dance practice, their evolving performance work, Dance Interrogations, and the cultural shifts possible as a result of long-term artistic practice. Their unique, long-standing collaboration (over 6 years and continuing) is unique in Australia and internationally. It is a collaboration which challenges deeply held beliefs around the low expectations of people who have a disability and explores the choreographic potential in the body and artist who experiences Cerebral Palsya condition affecting the muscular and skeletal system and which can make voluntary movement such as that in dance, difficult. Their practice itself constantly shifts between artistic formats in both studio and performance contexts, and draws upon a range of technologies familiar within the cultures of screendance and disability. This account is improvisational, an undoing of structure, to encourage other angles and depths of perception.
