In this paper, we explore support for ‘art mapping’, an activity that requires consideration of more complex interpretations of spatial relationships as users engage with identifying locations of relevance to artworks. Through a user study of the ArtMaps platform, and an exploratory study with professional artists, we identify diverse interpretations of spatial meaning in relation to art. We find that art mapping highlights potential for more active engagement with art through technology, but challenges existing systems for spatial representation. Through connecting our findings with work on designing for interpretation, and on space and place in HCI, we contribute new understanding of creating engagement through the spatial interpretation of art, and define potential characteristics and uses of holistic ‘footprints’ for artworks. It considers the way digital technology features in learning, particularly in the art and design context, examining if and how this relates to the uses made of digital technology - particularly the Internet - by contemporary art practitioners. Recognising a gap here, a web-based art resource (www.dareonline.org) has been devised, created and evaluated trying in some way to bridge this gap, both through its practical usage and - by raising questions in the mind of the user - manifested in the language of its construction. The problems and possibilities of access, communication, collaboration and diversity offered by the use of web-based technologies as demonstrated by a number of artists, set against a generally utilitarian and apparently uncritical ...

The prototype, hereafter called Cartography, consists of a web application enabling participants to input data and generate visualizations about participatory art practice in museums and art galleries. The chapter starts by analyzing the significance and changing role of performance documentation for museums and art galleries, focusing in particular on the role of the public in the context of participatory art practices. The chapter then makes a case for the capture of ‘relational’ forms of documentation which not only reflect how individual points of view sit in juxtaposition, or in opposition to each other, but also disclose important information about the rhizomatic nature of participatory practice. In conclusion, the chapter shows why relational documentation may offer sig...
