Exposition of chronic non-toxic doses of Te affected spontaneous lateralized exploration, social interaction behaviour, and survival responses in the treated rats. Te effects were blocked by the simultaneous administration of folic acid, a well-known methyl group donor in the cell, suggesting an epigenetic mode of action of Te. Te behavioural effects on the second generation (F 1) still were found in the next third generation (F 2). In order to evaluate if these transgenerational behavioural alterations in F 2 were depending on DNA methylating mechanisms, as observed in the F 1 generation, F 1 rats were mated at 90 days of age. Two groups of animals in the F 2 offspring were formed; one treated with and the other not treated with folic acid. Results showed that the untreated folic acid F 2 maturing rats, conserved the same pattern of behavioural alterations than its parents (F 1), in spite that they were not exposed to Te. Those F 2 animals treated with folic acid, instead recovered the normal behavioural responses in the three tests performed to evaluate coping behaviour. Results suggest that the molecular mechanism of Te is dependent on DNA methylating reactions, which is one of the molecular processes of epigenetic modulation in mammals.

During this process changes in one can induce adaptive responses on the other. Many factors in the environment have been studied with the notorious distinction of been rare or to be of high intensity strength in its interaction with living organisms. However, little attention has been put on some factors that have constant interaction with organisms but usually have low intensity strength, such as the case of the inorganic chemical environment that surrounds us. In this review, the interaction between the chemical element and living organisms is discussed under a theoretical model of interaction between compartments, giving attention to tellurium (Te), zinc (Zn) and selenium (Se) on some cognitive functions in human and animals. After studies in our laboratory of the phenotypic expression of the HSR (Hand Skill Relative) gene in school children community living in geographic zone rich in minerals and mines of La R...

The capacity to distinguish that events in the environment have "past" or "present" permitted the primitive evolving organisms to acquire a convenient enriched vision of the their surrounding world. The appropriate use of the information available as experience in an organism now it is known as learning. In spite of many years of intense research, the complete understanding of memory and learning still is not clear. Debate and disagreements about the intrinsic nature of this neural process in the scientific community did not help in these years to sediment a clear-cut knowledge about this important brain function. Part of these issues appears to be linked to the semantic use of some terms implying different meanings to different investigators, and the strong belief in interpretations about learning that in time has been considered dogmas. In the present work, intent to emphasize the meaning of many terms by limiting its significance and extending an alternative point of view previously presented elsewhere, about memory and learning is done.

Previous work has shown that ZnTe administered in drinking water to pregnant rats during pregnancy, delivery, lactation and offspring maturation up to prepuberal stage is able to modify several parameters of spontaneous behaviours related to cognition in offspring rats. Since Zn and Te have many biological properties, it’s not possible to conclude if behavioural changes are due to Zn, Te or both trace elements activity. In the present work, K2TeO3 and ZnCl2 were used alone in order to evaluate single actions of trace elements. Four experimental groups were formed: Control (water), Zn-treated group, Te-treated groups, and Zn+Te group. At the end of the experiments at 30 days of age offspring of each group were tested individually in a Double-Hole Board Labyrinth to evaluate lateralized exploration. Open field enriched with a rack and hole-board to evaluate motiv...

Well known examples are handedness and speech in humans. Laterality also is present in animals indicating a general evolutionary functional aspect and not a single distinctive trait of humans. In the present work, the consistency of one lateralized response in the spontaneous behaviour of exploration, driven by novel environments with different geometrical proportions was studied in rats. Consistency of response was considered when the animal shows the same preferential display in different testing contexts. Three geometrical forms of environments (square, rectangle and T shaped environment) were presented to normal intact rats. Exploratory activity measured by a digital counting device was video-taped in a 3 min duration tests. In these environments, rats had the choice to explore the right or the left aspect of the devices. Results show that...

To determine whether these affected behaviors would extend to the next generation, F1 litter rats previously exposed to tellurium (Te) up to 30-day-old were left at rest with no further treatment up to 90-day-old. The study revealed that Te effects were intergenerational. Here, considering that ZnTe was used in the previous study and that Zn ion has many physiological functions in the cell, experiments were conducted to elucidate if Zn would have an intergenerational effect similar to Te.
