Study protocol was conducted confi rming lumbar spinal stenosis and radicular commitment for L5 S1 in a mixed clinical presentation of vascular and neurogenic claudication.

The treatment of choice in early stages is pancreatoduodenectomy. The management post-surgery can depend on the histology pattern, and the overall survival can vary in different subgroups. Methods: A retrospective cohort study. We examined patients (pts) with invasive periampullary cancer undergoing pancreatoduodenectomy at the Hospital Clinico Universidad de Chile between 2002 to 2018. We analyzed epidemiological, clinical, surgical, and histological data. OS and the hazard ratio (HR) were established by GraphPad Prism 8.0. Results: Thirty-seven cases were registered. Twenty-two (59%) pts were men. The mean age was 62.5 (43-83 years). The histological subtypes were: 15 pts (40.5%) intestinal group (IN), 20 pts (54%) pancreatobiliary group (PB), 1 pt (2.7%) mixed and 1 pt (2.7%) signet ring cell type. A full concordance between histology and immunohistoche...

The functionalized GNRs were irradiated with infrared light to produce photothermal release of CF by a retro-Diels-Alder reaction. The adducts were chemisorbed on the GNRs and the functionalized nanoparticles were characterized by UV-vis, DLS, zeta potential and Raman and surface-enhanced Raman spectroscopy (SERS). On the basis of the degree of nanoparticle functionalization and the SERS results, we inferred the orientation of CF on the surface of the gold nanoparticle. Moreover, we determined the photothermal release profiles of CF from the gold surface by laser irradiation. The release was faster for the longer linker (n = 9). SERS revealed that, for the shorter linker (n = 4), molecules are oriented perpendicularly with respect to the gold surface, thereby maintaining the CF far from the surface. In co...

In this work, gold nanorods were synthetized and stabilized with polyethylene glycols and modified with two kinds of peptides. The D1 peptide that recognizes toxic aggregates of Aβ, a peptide involved in Alzheimer's disease (AD); and the Angiopep 2 that can be used to deliver nanorods to the mammalian central nervous system. The nanoconjugates were characterized using absorption spectrophotometry, dynamic light scattering, and transmission electron microscopy, among other techniques. We determined that the nanoconjugate does not affect neuronal viability; it penetrates the cells, and decreases aggregation of Aβ peptide in vitro. We also showed that when we apply our nanosystem to a Caenorhabditis elegans AD model, the toxicity of aggregated Aβ peptide is decreased. This work may contribute to the development of therapies for AD based on metallic nanopar...

En este estudio la abeja fue el insecto que más visito esta flor, aumentó los cuajes entre un 20,9 y 28,7% por árbol, al contar con 0,5 colmenas/ha y se mejoró el peso, volumen de jugo y grados ºBrix de los frutos.

Methods: a total of 1,256 records for AFC and 3,803 for CI, obtained between years 1981 and 2010 were analyzed. The (Co) variances components were estimated by a derivative-free restricted maximum likelihood procedure in a bi-trait animal model. Results: average of AFC and CI were 1,104 ± 141 and 487 ± 147 days, respectively. Heritabilities were 0.15 and 0.13 for AFC and CI, respectively, with -0.43 genetic correlation. The herd and year of birth were included as fixed effects for the AFC, while parity number and the covariate age of dam at farrow were analyzed for CI. All the effects had a significant influence over the CI variance. Conclusions: the values obtained for these traits indicate that selection for calving interval and age at first calving may have a relatively low impact, due to the large environmental effect on the variation of both parameters in these breed populations.

Modification of telomere length, as a result of adversity faced early in life, can modify an individual's phenotype. Studies in captivity have suggested a relationship between glucocorticoids and telomere length in developing individuals, however less is known about that relationship in natural populations. Methods: In order to evaluate the effect of early environmental stressors on telomere length in natural populations, we compared baseline corticosterone (CORT) levels and telomere length in nestlings of the same age. We collected blood samples for hormone assay and telomere determination from two geographically distinct populations of the Thorn-tailed Rayadito (Aphrastura spinicauda) that differed in brood size; nestlings body mass and primary productivity. Within each population we used path analysis to evaluate the relationship between brood size, body mass, baseline CORT and telomere length. Results: Within each distinct population, path coefficients showed a positive relationship between brood size and baseline CORT and a strong and negative correlation between baseline CORT and telomere length. In general, nestlings that presented higher baseline CORT levels tended to present shorter telomeres. When comparing populations it was the low latitude population that presented higher levels of baseline CORT and shorter telomere length. Conclusions: Taken together our results reveal the importance of the condition experienced early in life in affecting telomere length, and the relevance of integrative studies carried out in natural conditions.
