The first part reviews the literature that underpinned the development of the research methodology for the JISC User Behavior Monitoring and Evaluation Framework, as well as the literature that has subsequently helped to develop the model over the five years the Framework operated in the UK, in five cycles of research that were adjusted to meet the emerging needs of the JISC (Joint Information Systems Committee) at the time. The literature review attempts to synthesize the two main perspectives in the research studies: 1) small scale studies of student information behavior; and 2) the studies that focus on the quantitative usage of particular electronic information services in universities, often including implications for training and support. As the review indicates, there are gaps in the ev...
The impact of IT networks and electronic information services and sources on academic information... more The impact of IT networks and electronic information services and sources on academic information users is potentially enormous, and permeates all of the arenas of research, teaching, publishing and communication. The change provoked by the emergence of electronic information services (EIS), is only one of many changes taking place in higher education, which affect the nature of academic jobs and roles, research and knowledge, student profiles and learning. In an environment characterised by several drivers for change, it is important that information professionals and policy makers are able to make well-informed decisions concerning the development, provision and funding of EIS. To this end, JISC, the Joint Information Systems Committee, established a User Behaviour Monitoring and Evaluation Framework to investigate and profile the use of electronic information services within higher education in the United Kingdom. This article discusses aspects of the methodology of the Framework...

This article provides a review of the different perspectives on the nature of information that can be drawn respectively, from the literatures of communication theory, library and information science, information systems, computer science, other professional disciplines, cognitive science, organisation science, and policy making. Five definitions of information are identifiedc information as subjective knowledge, information as useful data or as a thing, information as a resource, information as a commodity, and information as a constitutive force in society. Attempts to integrate these perspective on information must take into account the context of information processing. Individuals, organisations and societies are concerned with the role that information can play in processes such as decision making, learning or innovation, whereas information professionals and information systems designers, the professionals concerned with information, need to be able to impose structure on information in order to gather it into their systems, and therefore need to treat information as an object and to create a systems view of information.

A small database containing titles, descriptors from the ERIC thesaurus and subject headings from Sears List of Subject Headings was compiled by each of a number of student indexer/searchers. A series of searches were then run on databases using natural and controlled language terms. Recall and Precision were calculated as overall measures by each student for each of the different search types. These measures were then compared across the group as a whole and the mean and standard deviation of recall and precision are calculated for each search type

B2B digital content marketing is an inbound marketing technique and hence offers a solution to the declining effectiveness of traditional interruptive marketing techniques. Design/methodology/approach – Semi-structured interviews were conducted with 15 key informants involved in B2B content marketing in the USA, UK and France, in five industry sectors. Findings – B2B digital content marketing is an inbound marketing technique, effected through web page, social media and value-add content, and is perceived to be a useful tool for achieving and sustaining trusted brand status. Creating content that is valuable to B2B audiences requires brands to take a “publishing” approach, which involves developing an understa...

The information that is available to the business end‐user over the Internet is normally updated with a frequency that is consistent with the nature of the information. Thus, many news and financial information sources provide real time information. Many database producers supply databases on CD‐ROM, with the opportunity to update databases through access to the Internet. For instance, JUSTIS offer a wide range of online updates to the JUSTIS CD‐ROM database. Many Wilson databases that are distributed on CD‐ROM are updated weekly on WilsonWeb. To give a commercial example, Tesco, in their home shopping trials, deliver a product catalogue on CD‐ROM to trial homes. Customers can access Tesco's server over the Internet with a view to placing an order, or to update ca...
