The earthquake was followed by a number of large aftershocks, but not preceded by any foreshocks within ~3 weeks according to the NEIC or ISC catalog. However, due to the limited station coverage of the local seismic network, a large portion of events may not be reported in routine catalogs. Here, we employ the matched filter technique to recover the undocumented earthquakes for the period beginning 80 days before through 30 days after the 2015 Gorkha earthquake. We detect twice as many aftershocks as those listed in the ISC catalog. We observe an along-strike aftershock expansion after the mainshock and before the largest Mw 7.3 aftershock that occurred on 12 May 2015. Repeating earthquakes are found to the ESE of the mainshock rupture area, suggesting that the expansion may be partially driven by afterslip. In addition, we observe a significant increase in seismicity rate ~3-4 days prior to the mainshock, initiating ~6 hours after a M 5.2 earthquake, located ~240 km to the NW of the mainshock. The increase of seismic activities occurs in a wide region around the Gorkha principal slip zone, indicating the effect of delayed dynamic triggering may contribute to the large-scale unloading process prior to the 2015 Gorkha mainshock.

The aftershocks data available at ORCD station, till 60 days following the main shock were compiled. The plot of aftershocks rate with time was found to be oscillatory decay. Then, we inverted regional waveforms from ASAIN and International Federation of Digital Seismograph Networks (FSDN) stations to determine source parameters and source time functions for a set of aftershocks with magnitudes in the range 4.3–5.6 \(m_b\). For the regional inversion we applied a methodology for the determination of the seismic moment tensor by means of full waveform inversion. The results obtained reflect the normal character of the main system fault, characterizing the study area.

Since its inception, the NorthEast Italy Seismic Network has grown enormously. Currently, it consists of 14 broad-band and 20 short-period seismic stations, all of which are telemetered to and acquired in real time at the OGS-CRS data center in Udine. Data exchange agreements in place with other Italian, Slovenian, Austrian and Swiss seismological institutes lead to a total number of 94 seismic stations acquired in real time, which confirms that the OGS is the reference institute for seismic monitoring of northeastern Italy. Since 2002, CRS has been using the Antelope software suite as the main tool for collecting, analyzing, archiving and exchanging seismic data. SeisComP is also used as a real-time data exchange server tool. A customized webaccessible server is used to manually relocate earthquakes, and automatic procedures have been setup for moment-tensor determination, shaking-map computation, web publishing of earthquake parametric data, waveform drumplots, state-of-health parameters, and quality checks of the station by spectra analysis. Scripts for email/SMS/fax alerting to public institutions have also been customized. Recently, a real-time seismology website was designed and setup (http://rts.crs.inogs.it/).

The infrastructure was constituted in response to the ML 6.4 Friuli destructive earthquake of 1976, with the main mandate of supporting civil protection emergency activities. The OGS monitoring infrastructure is presently composed of a seismometric and a strong-motion network, complemented by a number of Global Navigation Satellite Systems stations, each delivering observational data in real time, which are collected and processed by the headquarters of the Center for Seismological Research of OGS in Udine. The OGS networks operate in close cooperation with Italian and international networks from neighboring countries, within the framework of the agreements for real-time data exchange, to obtain improved rapid earthquake location and magnitude estimations. An earthquake swarm affected the Bransfield Strait, Antarctica, a unique rift basin in transition... more An earthquake swarm affected the Bransfield Strait, Antarctica, a unique rift basin in transition from intra-arc rifting to ocean spreading. The swarm, counting~85,000 volcanotectonic earthquakes since August 2020, is located close to the Orca submarine volcano, previously considered inactive. Simultaneously, geodetic data reported up to~11 cm northwestward displacement over King George Island. We use a broad variety of geophysical data and methods to reveal the complex migration of seismicity, accompanying the intrusion of 0.26-0.56 km 3 of magma. Strike-slip earthquakes mark the intrusion at depth, while shallower normal faulting the~20 km long lateral growth of a dike. Seismicity abruptly decreased after a Mw 6.0 earthquake, suggesting the magmatic dike lost pressure with the slipping of a large fault. A seafloor eruption is likely, but not confirmed by sea surface temperature anomalies. The unrest documents episodic magmatic intrusion in the Bransfield Strait, providing unique insights into active continental rifting.
ABSTRACT ITALY An optimal global coverage of the Earth with broadband seismographic stations is s... more ABSTRACT ITALY An optimal global coverage of the Earth with broadband seismographic stations is still an objective far from being reached. It has been remarked by many authors that this is especially true in the southern hemisphere, where relevant information on medium and low level seismicity is lost due to the lack of an appropriate density of stations in the oceanic regions and in the inhospitable Antarctic areas. Such a situation existed, at least until about a decade ago, in the wide region formed by the continental areas of southernmost South America (Patagonia and Tierra del Fuego), the Antarctic Peninsula and the oceanic region limited by the islands and ridges of the Scotia Arc. In the last 21 years OGS -Istituto Nazionale di Oceanografia e Geofisica Sperimentale and DNA-IAA (Dirección Nacional del Antártico -Instituto Antártico Argentino) deployed and managed the Antarctic Seismographic Argentinean Italian Network (ASAIN), a broadband seismic network (see Fig. 1 and Table 1), that operated in the Scotia Sea region, Antarctic Peninsula and polar area. Data for each station of this network are sent in real time by satellite transmission to OGS and DNA-IAA and also to Incorporated Research Institutions for Seismology (IRIS), Observatories and Research Facilities for European Seismology (ORFEUS) and from here also to GEOFON (GEOFOrschungsNetz) and are freely accessible in MiniSEED format.
