Adjustments presented herein regard the tailored set of E-RIHS KPIs acting upon the recommendations of the Commission HLEG of June 2020 to ensure for the effective quality monitoring of activities against reasoned targets for E-RIHS ERIC. With a view towards operations, the responsibility for quality management has been assigned chiefly at national node level with coordination by and delivery to the central hub. This is subject to change and further clarification over the course and development of the E-RIHS IP project and beyond. This deliverable furthermore provides the necessary indications towards defining the overall strategy of how each quality element drafted during E-RIHS PP is to be rendered operational with a dedicated timeframe of E-RIHS partners willing to undergo and test the quality assessment procedures outlined herein during this implementation phase. This live document is under continuous evolution with attention to the progression of overlapping parallel tasks.

In contrast with these techniques, OCT provides depthresolved information. Three post-processing modalities were explored: cross-sectional views, maps of scattering from given depths, and their 3D models. Some hidden alterations of the painting owing to past restorations were traced: retouching and overpainting with their positioning within varnish layers as well as indications of a former transfer to canvas.

OCT is a non-invasive technique of structural imaging of layers semi-permeable to the infra-red radiation. The aim of the 2018 research campaign at the Banqueting House, conducted within the MOLAB programme under the IPERION CH project, was to determine the present condition of the paintings and thus inform decisions about future conservation planning for these unique paintings.

Polarized steady-state fluorescence and fluorescence excitation spectra as well as time-resolved ... more Polarized steady-state fluorescence and fluorescence excitation spectra as well as time-resolved fluorescence for B-phycoerythrin (B-PE) from red algae, Porphyridium eruentum, embedded in polyvinyl stretched films were measured. The lifetimes of polarized fluorescence were analyzed using exponential components and fractal models. The interactions between various chromophores of the pigment-protein complexes investigated were discussed. The anisotropy of fluorescence excitation spectra differs from the anisotropy of absorption spectra and depends on the wavelength of observation. This shows that differently oriented chromophores take part in various paths of excitation energy transfer (ET) or change their excitation into heat with various efficiencies (or both). Also, analysis of time-resolved fluorescence measured in various spectral regions gives different polarized components of emission. Fractal analysis of lifetimes, done under supposition of the Foerster resonance ET mechanism, suggests different arrangements of energy donors and acceptors for molecules absorbing in different spectral regions. It shows that several fractions of differently oriented "forms" of chromophores exhibiting different spectral properties occur in B-PE complexes. Small changes in the orientation of the chromophores can be followed by modification of the path of excitation energy migration. Based on the results obtained a new reorientational mechanism of the State 1-+ State 2 transition W a s proposed: Even small conformational modifications of biliproteins, which could be caused in vivo by the change in the conditions of preillumination of bacteria, are able to modify the path of excitation ET. Such a reorientation may be YPosted on the website on

However, especially for organic specimens, caution must be taken to avoid harmful effects. In this work, the possible modification of recent calf parchment samples by proton beam irradiation was investigated applying fluences (given as deposited charge per unit area) both within and beyond the usual analytical practice. Attenuated Total Reflection Fourier Transform Infra-red Spectroscopy (FTIR-ATR) and Optical Coherence Tomography (OCT) were employed to assess changes, inspected from the surface of the samples. Although both techniques are apt to detect alterations of parchment in general, in the case of particles, which deposit the majority of their energy below the surface these techniques could not detect changes at low fluences. However, a simple “bath test” (short immersion in liquid) proved that disintegration within the material h...

Vincent van Gogh’s painting Congregation Leaving the Reformed Church in Nuenen from the collectio... more Vincent van Gogh’s painting Congregation Leaving the Reformed Church in Nuenen from the collection of the Van Gogh Museum in Amsterdam was executed in 1884 and partially repainted by the artist in 1885. The painting was restored in 1961, however the details of this treatment were not documented. After being stolen from the museum in 2002 and finally recovered in 2016, the Church was subjected to an extensive examination campaign which started in 2017 aiming at the characterisation of the painting materials used by Van Gogh, including the stratigraphy of both initial and later paint layers, as well as the assessment of the state of preservation, and the feasibility of the desired restoration treatment. A single paint sample was collected and embedded in resin for analysis by means of Optical Microscopy, Scanning Electron Microscopy with Energy Dispersive X-ray spectrometry (SEM-EDS) and Fourier Transform Infrared spectrometry (FTIR-ATR), which identified constituent materials and evi...

After some preliminary non‐invasive investigations, the painting was subjected to Macro XRF scanning. The further detailed study of micro‐samples became essential although of limited scope since, given the painting's historical value, their number had to be strictly limited. The application of optical coherence tomography (OCT) allowed selecting areas of the original paint layer and collecting samples representative of the artist's technique. Further study analysis of the cross‐sections stratigraphy using UV–VIS optical microscopy and SEM‐EDS analysis supported the conclusions derived from MA‐XRF images. All the results were compared with a reference database containing information about v...
