This paper motivates the employment of a cognitive headgear in the context of two concrete human-... more This paper motivates the employment of a cognitive headgear in the context of two concrete human-in-the-loop industrial use cases. However, the distinct design and implementation of such a headgear is strongly task-dependent and no one-fits-all solution exists. To overcome that, a computer-aided design process is proposed that allows the design of a device truly tailored to the individual needs. Further, the features and components required to support workers in the identified scenarios are depicted, including image-based worker localization, gaze-based skill-level detection, workflow recognition using head-worn sensors and multimodal assistance. Finally, early functional prototypes are illustrated.

The paper presents a detailed concept of a lightweight visualization approach of SysML models in Product Data Management Systems. This approach allows SysML model visualization without using specific authoring tools, resulting in a more flexible model data exchange between development partners.

A key requirement in supporting the work of engineers involved in the design of Cyber-Physical Pr... more A key requirement in supporting the work of engineers involved in the design of Cyber-Physical Production Systems (CPPS) is offering tools that can deal with engineering data produced across the various involved engineering disciplines. Such data is created by different discipline-specific tools and is represented in tool-specific data models. Therefore, due to this data heterogeneity, it is challenging to coordinate activities that require project-level data access. Semantic Web technologies (SWTs) provide solutions for integrating and making sense of heterogeneous data sets and as such are a good solution candidate for solving data integration challenges in multidisciplinary engineering (MDE) processes specific for the engineering of cyber-physical as well as traditional production systems. In this chapter, we investigate how SWTs can support multidisciplinary engineering processes in CPPS. Based on CPPS engineering use cases, we discuss typical needs for intelligent data integration and access, and show how these needs can be addressed by SWTs and tools. For this, we draw on our own experiences in building Semantic Web solutions in engineering environments.

Abstract Machine learning methods are considered a promising approach for improving operations an... more Abstract Machine learning methods are considered a promising approach for improving operations and processes in manufacturing. However, the application of machine learning often requires the expertise of a data scientist combined with thorough knowledge of the manufacturing processes. Small and medium-sized companies that specialize in certain high value-added, variant rich production processes often lack an in-house data scientist and therefore miss out on generating a deeper data-driven insight from their production data streams. This paper proposes a three-step machine learning methodology to empower process experts with limited knowledge in machine learning: 1) data exploration through clustering, 2) representation of the production systems behaviour through specially structured neural networks and 3) querying this representation through evolutionary algorithms to achieve decision support through online optimization or scenario simulation. The chosen algorithms focus on parameter-light, well-established, general use algorithms in order to lower knowledge requirements for their application.

However, living marine resources in these waters are declining due to overexploitation and other anthropogenic and environmental factors. It has been reported that deploying artificial reefs in coastal waters can improve the production of benthic resources. To ensure the sustainability of coastal fisheries in northern Chile this study aims to investigate fishermen’s perceptions on deploying artificial reefs and propose future management measures using Caleta Pisagua as a case study. Interviews of artisanal fishermen regarding four aspects: fishermen profile, fishing activity, resources, and artificial reefs were conducted. Results showed that most fishermen favored the implementation of artificial reefs within the Areas of Management and Exploitation of Benthic Resources (AMERBs).
