CONSTITUTION: The metal powders of two or more kinds among Ti, Al, Ni, Cr, Cu, Co, Fe, W, Si, Mo, Ta or the like are mixed, and the powdery mixture is housed in a capsule, is sealed and exhausted and is thereafter charged to a pressing device. Next, the powdery mixture is held under heating to a temp. lower than the m.p. of the metal having the lowest m.p. by about 400 to 100 deg.C without applying external pressure to form an intermetallic structure having a certain m.p. Next, the intermetallic structure is heated to a temp. lower than the m.p. by about 300 to 50 deg.C , and moreover, uniform static pressure of about >= 70.3 kg/cm2 is applied thereon. In this way, the sputtering target composed of two or more kinds of metals, having a microstructure more uniform than that by a casting method and having high density of about >= 90% of the theoretical density can be obtd. with minimum contamination.
