The mere mention of these names evokes feelings of admiration, awe, and curiosity as to what is the latest piece of wisdom flowing from their pens. Nadya A. Fouad and Patricia Arredondo are two such names, and we are all lucky to have at our fingertips a coauthored practical manual written by these incredible psychologists! Becoming Culturally Oriented:

Chilenos arrived during the “Gold Rush” and many immigrants from Chile settled in California over the years. For the twenty-first century, several projections are made. One report suggests that the United States could have more speakers of Spanish than any other country. This does not mean monolingual Spanish but individuals who are bilingual or continue to speak Spanish at home. From the Pew Hispanic Research Center (Lopez and Minushkin, Hispanics see their situation in US deteriorating; oppose key immigration enforcement measures, 2008) are population projections. This report indicates that non-Hispanic Whites will constitute 47% of the population in 2050; today they are 67% of the population. Primarily based on childbirth versus immigration, the Latinx heritage population that was at 14% in 2005, and in 2017 is at 17% will rise to 29% in 2050. Non-Hispanic Whites. It cannot be disputed; Latinx immigrants and their families are setting the stage for 2050.

G. Draguns, W. J. Lonner, and J. E. Trimble (2008). The sixth edition of a book indicates to me need, relevance, and impact. The fact that Counseling Across Cultures is the book under discussion is not surprising. With the first edition in 1976, Pedersen and his co-editors, opened a space of knowledge building of increasing centrality to the counseling and all helping professions. This new edition, builds on the previous editions, all communicating paradigms for considering cultural perspectives in counseling and multidimensional worldviews. The organization of each chapter in Counseling Across Cultures promotes competency development with the statement of specific objectives and learning outcomes. Further, the sections on Critical Incidents, Discussion Questions, and Summary/Conclusion are summative and instructive; further promoting critical thinking and analysis of complex cultural issues. The majority of the chapters mirror the ecological systems framework discussed in the multicultural counseling literature. There are concepts such as acculturation, transition, and change, and identity that are relevant for counselors working with immigrants and refugees as well with American Indians, Latinas/os, and Arab/Muslim clients. Finally, for all applied discussions, the importance of multicultural competencies is foremost. Counseling Across Cultures is not time bound. Rather, it further solidifies the centrality of multicultural perspectives in all of counseling. (PsycINFO Database Record (c) 2009 APA, all rights reserved).

A panel composed of Latino counseling professionals representing varied Mestizo backgrounds discussed their personal and professional experiences surrounding the Mestizo/Latino diaspora. This article discusses population definitions, contextual variables, and demographics regarding Mestizos/Latinos, along with life transition issues and ethnic-heritage themes. A psychohistorical approach to family counseling is presented, and illustrative vignettes, including personal anecdotes by the conference presenters/authors, are provided. Recommendations for practice are offered.
