It addresses the structured racism that kept the city divided despite the class status and achievements of early Black residents. In this study, I examine the history of resource allocation and expenditures, and how resources were mismanaged and misused to the detriment of Compton and its residents. Using qualitative interviews of 20 African-Americans who grew up in Compton and attended neighborhood schools, and a quantitative analysis of demographic shifts alone side resource changes, this study theorizes the complex ways in which resources, psychology, and identity interplay in the creation of the ghetto and ultimately underachievement. Black boys in schools are often labeled as discipline problems, criminalized and overclassified i... more Black boys in schools are often labeled as discipline problems, criminalized and overclassified into special education programs. This article describes the ways in which current practices of labeling and disciplining Black boys have far-reaching impacts on their lives beyond school. It explores the ways Black boys, who are surveilled and criminalized in school, are further victimized when school records are used to characterize them as deviant as a way of justifying violence against them. Drawing upon anti-blackness as a theoretical framework, the author explores the 9-1-1 transcripts in the cases of Trayvon Martin and Tamir Rice to clarify the role of surveillance, then explains how school records are implicated in the no-prison phenomenon prevalent in many Black Lives Matter cases. The paper reveals not only the ways in which Black boys remain under the watchful eye of society, policed in their every move, but it also demonstrates acceptance of policing of Black boys’ bodies. This article illuminates how the lived experiences of Black men in comparison to experiences of d... more This article illuminates how the lived experiences of Black men in comparison to experiences of dogs in society highlight antiblackness as the prevailing sentiment in America. This juxtaposition illuminates the psychological project embedded within antiblackness—to dehumanize Black people by elevating dogs alongside other racial groups that have been deemed as human. The article demonstrates how dogs have not only been embraced by Whites, but have been given access into spaces and granted civil liberties for which Blacks continue to struggle. The article looks at the role of dogs in a country that once categorized them as nuisances and marked them with distain by identifying them along with Blacks, Mexicans, Jews, Irish, Chinese, and Japanese as the “undesirable” elements of society. This case study examines the role of parents as situationally positioned educators during summer ... more This case study examines the role of parents as situationally positioned educators during summer months. It illuminates the processes employed by a public charter school to empower parents to support student learning. The study is an action research case study of one school in a small network of schools. The goal was to determine the effectiveness of the summer project involving parents that had been instituted years prior to replace the formal summer school. The study involved a review of parent survey data, student DRA scores, and interviews with school administrators and teachers. The findings demonstrate that when educators serve as mediators and when schools create a culture of collaboration, parents are able to support students during the summer. In this case, parents as school agents fostered a summer leap by which students gained in reading levels or at the very least maintained their learning from the prior school year.
