The dipole magnets of the LHC beam optics will separate the ion beams from the spectator protons; the spectator protons and neutrons will be respectively detected by the proton (ZP) and the neutron (ZN) calorimeters.

For tele-home care uses by elderly or untrained people, these type of solutions are impracticable. As an example of user-friendly tele-home care system, in this paper we present the first telehome care application of DVB-T technology over standard home entertainment equipments and a prototypal low cost microcontroller-based acquisition unit for 1-lead ECG. The usability and low cost of the system show the potentiality of the approach.
Il progetto nazionale RadioLab dell\u2019INFN rappresenta un\u2019azione efficace di diffusione d... more Il progetto nazionale RadioLab dell\u2019INFN rappresenta un\u2019azione efficace di diffusione della cultura scientifica, e in particolare di Fisica nucleare, attraverso il coinvolgimento attivo di studenti delle scuole superiori in misure di radioattivit\ue0 ambientale. Comunicazione scientifica, didattica e ricerca si integrano attuando azioni di orientamento formativo mediante un processo che ricalca le fasi attraverso cui evolve un lavoro di ricerca. Il coinvolgimento degli studenti avviene con sessioni di lavoro in laboratorio, con l\u2019assemblaggio dei rivelatori, la loro esposizione nelle scuole e nelle abitazioni e di nuovo in laboratorio per la lettura dei dosimetri e l\u2019elaborazione dei dati acquisiti. Ci\uf2 comporter\ue0 una partecipazione attiva anche dei docenti in un percorso di aggiornamento, particolarmente opportuno, soprattutto in vista delle nuove direttive ministeriali che prevedono l\u2019insegnamento della fisica moderna nell\u2019ultimo anno della scuola superiore. W... more ABSTRACT We have studied GaAs pixel detectors on semi-insulating wafers with Schottky contacts. We performed comprehensive measurements on the inter-pixel and capacitance to back plane. Being semi-insulating, the behaviour is totally different with respect to other common semiconductors, such as high resistivity silicon. Non-homogeneities are also an issue, due to both the contacts and the crystal bulk. In order to detect them and their influence on capacitance, we undertook systematic measurements with different configurations of the measuring electrodes.

As dose-rate dependence regards, the microchamber readings showed the maximum variation from the reference condition at the lowest dose rate value; relative standard deviation of measurements was within 0.3%. The polarity effect is within 0.5% for field size greater than 2 × 2 cm 2 ; for field size less than 2 × 2 cm 2 the effect increases, still remaining within 1%. No energy and angular dependence were observed. A26 IC PDD measurements agreed with those obtained with the EDGE diode. FWHM values show a better agreement with the EDGE diode values than A1SL. The penumbra values were greater than those obtained with the EDGE diode. OF values showed a good agreement with EDGE diode ones. Conclusions: A26 IC meets the requirements to be a class reference chamber and it could consequently represent a reference detector for PDD and OAR measurements.

A commercially available computed radiography (CR) system for dental radiography was used to prod... more A commercially available computed radiography (CR) system for dental radiography was used to produce images from radiolabeled polyacrilamide gel electrophoresis (PAGE) assays. Typically, similar investigations require specific and expensive autoradiography devices. The CR unit was characterized in terms of sensitivity and fading by means of a 90 Sr source that well simulates the experimental conditions, and then used for quantitative analyses of the human immunodeficiency virus type 1 (HIV-1) reverse transcriptase (RT) polymerase-independent ribonuclease H (RNase H) activity monitored by PAGE analysis. The results showed that the present methodology allows quantifying effectively the RNase H catalyses and that the obtained data are in good agreement with previous reference works. Finally, in order to further validate the present method in terms of relationship between enzyme activity, the rate of products formation and signal intensity, a PAGE analyses of the HIV-1 RNase H inhibition by the known diketo acid derivative RDS1643 was carried out.
