The MPTP formation is common during aging and age related pathologies, activating cell death pathways to avoid unhealthy consequences and malignancies in the brain tissue. Several studies have identified the participation of Cyclophilin-D (Cyp-D) and adenine nucleotide translocase(ANT) in forming MPTP. However, Ca2+ is known to participate significantly in MPTP induction, although its concentration and time dependent permeabilization mechanisms are still elusive. In this work, we have focused on the contribution of Ca2+ participation, its concentration and time taken to permeabilze the mitochondrial inner membrane as a measure of light scattering at 540 ηM. Objective: This study aimed to investigate the antioxidants and free radicals scavenging properti... more Objective: This study aimed to investigate the antioxidants and free radicals scavenging properties of ethanolic extracts from Tribulus terrestris fruit (TTF) and Mesua ferrea flower (MFF).Methods: The antioxidant and free radical scavenging activities were measured by using standard protocols against phytoextracts used at 50, 100, 150, 200 and 250 µg/ml concentration. Total phenolic and flavonoid content were estimated using Folin-Ciocalteu and aluminium-chloride reagent assay methods.Results: Among the extracts, MFF showed the highest total antioxidant ability followed by TTF. With regard to various scavenging activities, MFF had the highest radical scavenging activity than TTF extract closely resembled the standards. Also, the reducing capacity on ferrous ion was high in MFF than TTF. A new series of phenolic glycoside esters, saccharumoside-B and its analogs (9b-9n, 10) have been... more A new series of phenolic glycoside esters, saccharumoside-B and its analogs (9b-9n, 10) have been synthesized by the Koenigs-Knorr reaction. Antiproliferative activities of the compounds (9b-9n, 10) were evaluated on various cancer cell lines including, MCF-7 breast, HL-60 leukemia, MIA PaCa-2 pancreatic, DU145 prostate, HeLa cervical and CaCo-2 colon, as well as normal human MCF10A mammary epithelial and human peripheral blood mononuclear cells (PBMC) by MTT assay. Compounds (9b-9n, 10) exhibited considerable antiproliferative effects against cancer cells with IC50 range of 4.43 ± 0.35 to 49.63 ± 3.59 µM, but they are less cytotoxic on normal cells (IC50 > 100 µM). Among all the compounds, 9f showed substantial antiproliferative activity against MCF-7 and HL-60 cells with IC50 of 6.13 ± 0.64 and 4.43 ± 0.35, respectively. Multigenerational effects of phthalates were evaluated in rats upon exposure to DBP, aiming to provide some evidences about its potential in causing developmental teratogenicity. Gestational rats were exposed to DBP (500 mg/kg bw/day) and control groups with olive oil. On the 18th day of gestation, fetuses (F1) isolated from a few dams were subjected to prenatal screening, and the other rats were allowed to litter, and later postnatal screening was made. DBP-toxicated (F1) rats were crossed and reared up to three generations (F2 and F3) by adopting the same experimental design. A substantial simulation of the inhibitory system was noticed. A profound increase was found in the level of the inhibitory transmitter, GABA on methyl parathion injection. An increase in the activity levels of the enzymes glutamic acid decarboxylase and 4-aminobutyrate-2-oxoglutarate-amino transferase in the cortex, brain stem and spinal cord of the CNS was found. It is observed that methyl parathion causes potentiation of the inhibitory transmission (GABAergic system) in the wake of inducing suppression of cholinergic system in CNS of developing rat pups.

Methyl parathion induced alterations in the level of monoamines, viz. norepinephrine, dopamine an... more Methyl parathion induced alterations in the level of monoamines, viz. norepinephrine, dopamine and serotonin were studied in discrete regions of developing central nervous system of rat pups. A significant decrease in the level of monoamines noticed in methyl parathion toxicosis may be related to the altered neuronal activity and inefficiency, leading to depression and impairment in various behavioural activities. In contrast to AChE inhibition, monoamine oxidase (MAO) activity showed an increasing trend and it could cause deamination of catecholamines and accumulation of its metabolites. This suggests that an increased AChE inhibition may indirectly stimulate MAO activity in developing rat pups exposed to methyl parathion.

In this study, earthworm species Eudrilus eugeniae was studied for its sensitivity to sublethal doses of Cr (8 ppm) and Zn (350 ppm) in terms of alterations occurred in oxidative stress indices and reproductive parameters in the testis. A significant (p < 0.05) decrease in the rate of food intake was observed on 7, 14 and 21 days of Cr toxicity; while increased rate was evident upon 7 days of Zn exposure. Changes evident in the rate of cocoon production (-39.54 and +38.63 %), hatchability (-77.85 and +30.0 %) highlight higher toxic potential of Cr than Zn, respectively. Moderate to severe vacuolization in spermatic follicles and higher incidence of tailless (+52.6 % in Cr and 20.8 % in Zn), and head bent (+18.8 % in Cr and 0 % in Zn) sperms were evident in Cr(VI) exposed worms emphasizing the higher vulnerability of E. eugeniae to Cr toxicity. The present study was undertaken to identify the nature of the interactive effects of chlorpyrifo... more The present study was undertaken to identify the nature of the interactive effects of chlorpyrifos (CPF) and cold stress (15 degrees and 20 degrees C) on the activities of acetyl cholinesterase (AChE), choline acetyl transferase (ChAT), Na+, K(+)-ATPase and malondialdehyde (MDA) level in the cerebral cortex of 1 week, 3 weeks and 3 months of age. The results indicated an interaction of CPF with age of animal and cold exposure resulting in marked decrease in the activity levels of AChE, ChAT, Na+, K(+)-ATPase, followed by increased MDA levels. Overall, the effects of co-exposure of cold stress and CPF were appreciably different from either of the exposures. However, synergistic-action of CPF and cold stress at 15 degrees C showed a greater inhibition of AChE, ChAT, and Na+, K(+)-ATPase in comparison with CPF or cold stress alone and together at 20 degrees C. The results reveal that young animals are markedly more sensitive to interactive effects of CPF and cold stress than adults.

We report a case of 4 weeks old girl with a de novo interstitial deletion of the short arm of chr... more We report a case of 4 weeks old girl with a de novo interstitial deletion of the short arm of chromosome 3 (p13-p21) and clinical findings typical of proximal 3p deletion together with heart defects, choanal atresia, ear anomalies, central nervous system anomalies, renal anomalies and associated Joubert&amp;amp;amp;amp;amp;amp;amp;amp;amp;amp;amp;amp;amp;amp;amp;amp;amp;amp;amp;amp;amp;amp;#39;s syndrome (JS). Family history is unremarkable and parenteral chromosomes were normal. The clinical manifestations of the patient are compared with those of 11 patients previously described with a proximal 3p deletion. The additional JS features associated with this syndrome were described. This is the first case report in English literature describing 3p deletion associated with additional JS features.

The present study examined the presence of oxidative stress during maternal exposure of fluoride and the therapeutic strategy of Aloe vera, Curcuma longa and Ocimum sanctum extracts in functional prevention of fluoride led oxidative stress. The pregnant Wistar rats were exposed to 100 ppm fluoride in drinking water and pups born to them were supplemented with phytoextracts daily. On 21st postpartum day, the pups were sacrificed to analyse fluoride and oxidative stress markers. Fluoride exposure significantly increased its accumulation, lipid peroxidation and decreased the activities of catalase, superoxide dismutase, glutathione peroxidase, glutathione-S-transferase and glutathione levels in discrete regions of the central nervous system (CNS) of pups indicating oxidative stress and inhibited antioxidant defense. Aqueous leaf extract of L. speciosa (banaba) effectively decreased the blood glucose in streptozo... more Aqueous leaf extract of L. speciosa (banaba) effectively decreased the blood glucose in streptozotocin-induced diabetic mice after 15th day of banaba exposure. Further, banaba leaf extract have the potential to inhibit lipid peroxidation and effectively intercept/neutralize reactive oxygen species such as super oxide, H2O2 and NO based free radicals. The aqueous banaba leaf extract (150 mg/kg bodyweight) duly reduced STZ generated reactive intermediates and radical species helping to regulate normal levels of antioxidative markers like superoxide dismutase, catalase, glutathione-S-transferase and reduced glutathione.
