Embedded systems are becoming more complex by integrating multiple features. They require a lot o... more Embedded systems are becoming more complex by integrating multiple features. They require a lot of resources to improve execution performances. Their developments are a real challenge due to both their complexity and their quality of service requirements. To manage this complexity, a model driven approach focuses on the design of these systems by raising the level of the specification abstraction. For this reason the number of modeling languages (metamodels) is increasing (scientific publications, industrial projects). However, there is currently little use and dissemination of good practice to define metamodels (metamodeling) and transforming these metamodels for verification, validation and code generation. However, the identification of a string of well-structured model transformation and formalization of metamodeling patterns should be an important practice in the sense that it should speed up the metamodels writing, facilitate their reuse, teaching and finally processing for code generation. The research below suggests a structure of a model transformations chain by defining an intermediate language.

A hardware implementation of these algorithms for the needs of real-time and embedded systems improves performances. In this paper we present some existing approaches used for hardware systems modeling. We propose a new graphical tool for designing image and video processing embedded systems called VIP DESIGN (Video and Image Processing Design). The novelty of our approach is that we bypass the shortcomings of existing languages by providing a high level of abstraction through two kinds of diagrams: structural diagram and filter edition diagram. It also allows formal verification and automatic code generation for ASIC and FPGA implementation.

In this paper we identify the requirements of a design tool for the implementation of image and v... more In this paper we identify the requirements of a design tool for the implementation of image and video processing algorithms in hardware platforms such as FPGA or ASIC. We discuss the advantages and weaknesses of some existing design languages. Finally, we propose our solution, in compliance with specified requirements, which intends to bypass the shortcomings of existing languages by providing a high-level of abstraction through two kinds of diagrams; structural diagram and filter edition diagram. It also allows a formal verification and automatic code generation for an ASIC or a FPGA implementation.
