The fish were divided into four groups. The first group was fed with diets containing no sulfamerazine; the second group was supplemented with sulfamerazine at 100 mg kg-1 for 21 days; the third group was treated with sulfamerazine at 200 mg kg-1 for 21 days; fourth group were supplemented with sulfamerazine at 400 kg-1 for 21days. Blood samples were taken to determine of the malondialdehyde (MDA) levels and catalase (CAT) activities from fish on the 3 rd , 7 th , 14 th and 21 st days of feeding. The levels of MDA were lower in the groups exposed to three different doses of sulfamerazine treatment than in the control group on day 3 rd. MDA levels began to increase depending on time at group supplemented with sulfamerazine. MDA levels were found to be higher at fish exposed to 200 mg kg-1 dose than those observed in fish exposed to 100 and 400 mg kg-1 dose of sulfamerazine (P<0.05). CAT activities increased in rainbow trout after application of three different doses of sulfamerazine on day 3 rd of exposure, while they decreased after application of sulfamerazine on day 14 th , 21 st of exposure. CAT activities were found to be higher at fish exposed to 200 mg kg-1 dose of sulfamerazine than those observed in fish exposed to 100 and 400 mg kg-1 dose (P<0.05). It was observed that oxidant-antioxidant status changed in rainbow trout after application of different doses of sulfamerazine.
Parasites in which freshwater snails are intermediate hosts pose a serious threat to human health... more Parasites in which freshwater snails are intermediate hosts pose a serious threat to human health worldwide. We show here that freshwater snails can potentially be controlled by leech predation; in principle, this approach could significantly reduce snail-borne parasitic diseases (SBPDs). Specifically, glossiphoniid leeches, Helobdella austinensis and congener species , consume freshwater snails indiscriminately, while other common leeches do not. A single adult H. austenensis , for example, can consume up to its weight in snails, e.g. Physella acuta, per day. Our predator–prey models suggest that snail populations could be eliminated in relatively short time periods (approximately six months) using a leech biocontrol approach. This could have considerable impact on global SBPDs by breaking the intermediate host life cycle.

The fish caught for this study were transported to the laboratory in accordance with ethical rules and investigated for parasites. According to the results, two different parasite species (Myxobolus cyprini and Lamproglena pulchella) were identified. Myxobolus cyprini was found in the soft tissue of the pectoral fins of Capoeta trutta as an off-white oval cyst. In the histopathological examinations of the cysts, the spores of Myxobolus cyprini were observed. Lamproglena pulchella was seen in the gills of Barbus lacerta. No parasite was encountered in Capoeta umbla. These parasite species are the first records for wildlife fishes of Uzuncayır Dam Lake (Turkey).

This is likely due to considerable underestimation of Palearctic biodiversity, but investigations into potential hidden diversity are lacking. To shed light on this, the present study introduces new data for specimens initially identified as Placobdella costata from Ukraine (close to the type locality),

There are a few species of medicinal leeches. However, H. medicinalis and H. verbana are known in Turkey. Currently, Turkey is one of the world’s most important leech-exporting countries. The medicinal leech species of Azerbaijan was named Hirudo medicinalis or H. medicinalisorientalis and is still exported under the same names in CITES records. However, within the scope of the study, this medicinal leech species was found to be 100% similar to H. orientalis according to the COI mtDNA gene region. In this study, it was determined that a person could collect an average of 24.19±11.14 medicinal leeches per unit of time and there was 0.60±0.28 leech/m 2 medicinal leech per unit area in the wetlands of Lankaran-Astara region of Azerbaijan. The trade and culture of medicinal leeches in Azerbaijan is a sector that has started in recent years. The country's leech exports in 2021 exceeded the exports of all countries and have increased to around 1498500 units (~1500kg).

This study was conducted to investigate the ameliorating effects of lycopene on TCF-induced toxicity in carp by evaluating haematological parameters and oxidant/antioxidant status. Fish were randomly divided into seven experimental groups. These groups were arranged as follows: control (no treatment) group, corn oil group, lycopene (10 mg kg −1) group, TCF-I (11 mg L −1) group, TCF-I (11 mg L −1) plus lycopene (10 mg kg −1) group, TCF-II (22 mg L −1) group and TCF-II (22 mg L −1) plus lycopene (10 mg kg −1) group. At the end of 14 days administration, blood and tissue (liver, kidney, and gill) samples were collected. Haematological changes [red blood cell (RBC) and white blood cell (WBC) count, haemoglobin (Hb) concentration, haematocrit (Ht) level, and erythrocyte indices: mean corpuscular volume (MCV), mean corpuscular haemoglobin (MCH), and mean corpuscular haemoglobin concentration (MCHC)] were determined in the blood samples, while antioxidant parameters [(malondialdehyde (MDA) and reduced glutathione (GSH) levels and superoxide dismutase (SOD), catalase (CAT), and glutathione peroxidase (GSH-Px) activities] were evaluated in the liver, kidney and gill samples. The results demonstrated that all the haematological parameters were significantly decreased in the TCF-I and TCF-II groups when compared to the control group. Notable increases in the tissue MDA levels were observed in the TCF-treated groups. In contrast, significant decreases were observed in the tissue SOD, CAT and GSH-Px activities and GSH levels in the TCF-I and TCF-II groups. However, simultaneous treatment with lycopene provided a marked normalisation of the haematological and oxidant/antioxidant parameters compared with the TCF-I and TCF-II groups. The findings show that dietary lycopene supplementation might be helpful in abrogation of TCF toxicity by changing haematological conditions and antioxidant status in fish.

During the study, leech samples were taken from nine wetlands. In the study, seven species belonging to Erpobdellidae (Erpobdella octoculata, Erpobdella testacea), Glossiphonidae (Helobdella stagnalis, Placobdella costata), Hirudinidae (Hirudo sulukii, Hirudo verbana) and Haemopidae (Haemopis sanguisuga) were determined. E. octoculata and E. testacea from Cip Dam Lake and Behramaz stream, from Durusu (Terkos) Lake and Kaledibi Marsh, and H. verbana from Iron H. sanguisuga Marsh and Sülüklü Lake are the first record. H. sulukii and H. verbana leech species are the most important medicinal leech species used in traditional and integrative medicine. Extensive international trade in H. verbana was identified as a major threat to natural populations, so it has been listed in Appendix II of the Convention on International Trade in Endangered Species of Wild Fauna and Flora (CITES).

This study was carried out in 2017 and 2018 in order to determine the Hirudinea fauna of some wetlands in Bingöl province. The investigation was conducted on a total of 13 stations. Methods: The water parameters of the stations were measured and recorded in situ. The collected specimens were brought alive to the Zoology Laboratory of Bingöl University Biology Department and kept alive under room temperature conditions. The diagnosis of leech samples was made through the living samples, and they were identified at the level of family, genus, and species. Results: During the study, seven species, belonging to six genera and in four families were recorded. These are; Hirudo verbana
