Olive is one of the oldest cultivated plants of Anatolia/Turkey. ‘Domat’ is the predominant large... more Olive is one of the oldest cultivated plants of Anatolia/Turkey. ‘Domat’ is the predominant large fruiting cultivar particularly suitable for green processing in Turkey. Leafy cuttings of ‘Domat’ olive are very difficult to rooting, so the nursery tree production is costly and time consuming. The effects of IBA and NAA mixtures were examined on the rooting of ‘Domat’ olive cuttings in two consecutive years. Moreover, the auxin sensitive phase of cuttings was also assessed. The mixing rate of 5 : 2 g/l (IBA : NAA) was found to be optimum for the highest rooting rates (up to 60%) and root quality in the two successive years. Application of IBA (5 g/l) at the 5th day of experiment initiation, significantly (p = 0.001) increased the per cent of rooting (63) compared to the cuttings treated at day 0 (46) and the figures of other rooting variables. However, the root production of ‘Domat’ cuttings is very poor. Thus the propagation has to be done by grafting, despite it’s a costly practice. In this work, the effects of five different wounding treatments on the rooting of ‘Domat’ olive cuttings were examined in two consecutive years. Leafy semi hardwood cuttings were collected mid-February, wounded and treated with 5 g.l-1 indole butyric acid (IBA) after wounding. Shallow incision wounding significantly augmented the rooting of cuttings particularly in the second year. The highest rooting percentage and root number were 68% and 4.5 respectively with incisions while unwounded cuttings gave 21% rooting and 1.0 root. In this study, possibility of cutting propagation of Çiftlikköy-1, 2 and 4 fig cultigens (Ç 1 , Ç... more In this study, possibility of cutting propagation of Çiftlikköy-1, 2 and 4 fig cultigens (Ç 1 , Ç 2 , Ç 4) which have been cultivated in Çeşme peninsula of İzmir since old times was investigated. These cultigens are all parthenocarpic and have high breba fruit quality characteristics. Terminal wood cuttings in various lengths were taken in February and rooted under mist. Root regeneration of Ç 1 cuttings was significantly higher than Ç 2. In both cultigens, rooting rates of the cuttings ranged between 95.83 % and 100 % according to cutting type. The highest root number and root length were obtained from the cuttings which have 5 nodes with 2-year old wood at their bases, while the lowest values were obtained from the cuttings prepared from 1-year old wood. As for the Ç 4 cultigen, short, intermediate and long cuttings of 1-year old shoots gave 75.92 %, 100.00 % and 100.00 % rooting respectively, one-year old short and intermediate cuttings with 5 nodes from 2-year old wood even rooted at 100.00 % level.

The 'Ayvalik' olive cultivar, the most grown for high quality olive oil in Turkey, is generally r... more The 'Ayvalik' olive cultivar, the most grown for high quality olive oil in Turkey, is generally regarded as showing very good rooting ability. However, cuttings sometimes show moderate or even poor rooting performances, a problem likely related to the use of inappropriate rooting media. The aim of this work was to determine the most successful media among those traditionally used and to identify promising alternatives. October cuttings were planted in 25 different media in two consecutive years under mist propagation conditions. Substrates such as peat, perlite, bark, pumice, sand, polystyrene beads, phenolic foam, rockwool and vermiculite were used pure or in mixtures. In the first year the highest rooting percentage (100%) and visual rating scores (5) were obtained with phenolformaldehyde foam. Perlite-vermiculite (1:1 v/v) was associated with a 95% rooting percentage in both years. The highest mean number of roots (10.8), root length (47 mm), root dry (382 mg) and fresh weights (48.3 mg), and number of secondary roots (13) were recorded in the same medium in the second year. Rockwool, peat-polystyrene (2:1 v/v) and sand-perlite (1:2 v/v) also led to more than 90% of cuttings taking root, while pure sand, peat and peat-sand mixtures gave very low (5-28%) rooting percentages. Perlite-vermiculite 1:1 (v/v) and pre-sized rockwool cubes may be appropriate alternatives to traditional sand-perlite mixtures for rooting 'Ayvalik' olive cuttings.

In this study, the effect of methanolic extracts obtained from softwood and hardwood cuttings of ... more In this study, the effect of methanolic extracts obtained from softwood and hardwood cuttings of mature walnut, on the rooting of mung bean (Vigna radiata) cuttings were examined. Significant promotive activity was predicted on Rf 1.0 zones of choromatograms in both types of cuttings. At the presence of auxin (IBA), synergistic effect was observed especially at the specific Rf zone of hardwood cuttings. As a result of two dimensional paper chromatography, more than one phenolic compounds may be responsible from the cofactor activity at Rf zones was concluded. However, no marked differences generally predicted among the cutting types in relation with the composition and relative amounts of phenolic compounds.

Çeliklerinin Köklenmesi Üzerine Etkileri Bu çalışmada sakız ağacının, yapraklı uç çeliklerinin sisleme altında köklenmesi üzerine farklı çelik alma zamanları, köklendirme ortamları ve indolbutirik asit (IBA) konsantrasyonlarının etkisi incelenmiştir. Ayrıca, çeliklerin içsel köklenme kofaktörü aktivitesi belirlenmiştir. En yüksek köklenme oranı (% 76.6), 15 Şubat'ta alınan ve 20 g.l-1 IBA uygulanan çeliklerde, perlit ortamında elde edilmiştir. Çeliklerin köklenme oranlarındaki azalmalara karşın, engelleyici köklenme faktörlerinin (Rf 0.1, 0.9 ve 1.0) sayısı ve mung fasulyesi testindeki aktiviteleri düzenli olarak artış göstermiştir. Elde edilen sonuçlar, sakız ağacının yapraklı odun çelikleri ile kitlesel olarak çoğaltılabileceğini göstermektedir.

In this report, the inflorescence characteristics of an exceptional monoecious Pistacia atlantica Desf. tree population were presented. The gender distribution was highly complex and variable among the trees. Some of the branches bore only female or male inflorescences. Also, some branches bore inflorescences belonging to both sexes concurrently. Besides, there were several branches having mixed clusters comprised the flowers of both sexes separately or hermaphrodite flowers in which the pistil and stamen concurrently appeared in some trees. In hermaphrodite flowers, defected floral organs were abundant.

This study was aimed to determine the fertilization biology of the 'Arsel' olive cultivar... more This study was aimed to determine the fertilization biology of the 'Arsel' olive cultivar obtained by hybridization breeding. For this reason, treatments of open pollination, cross pollination, and self-pollination were performed for 2 years and self-compatibility and appropriate pollinators of this new cultivar were investigated. Among the varieties included as pollinators (‘Memecik’, ‘Gemlik’, ‘Uslu’, ‘Ayvalık’ and ‘Eğriburun Nizip’), the highest fruit set was achieved with ‘Memecik’ and ‘Gemlik’ varietes in both years (2.64%, 1.37% and 1.75%, 1.39%). For this reason, ‘Memecik’ and ‘Gemlik’ cultivars were the best pollinator for ‘Arsel’ olive was thought. On the other hand, considering the statistical analyzes and productivity index values, ‘Arsel’ variety was found to be self-incompatible. Tamamı partenokarpik olan bu tipler yüksek yellopu kalite özelliklerine sahiptir. Her tipin farklı boydaki terminal odun çelikleri Şubat ayında alınmış ve şişleme altında köklendirilmiştir. Çı çeliklerinin kök rejenerasyonu, Ç2'den önemli düzeyde daha yüksek olmuştur. Köklenme oranları çelik tipine bağlı olarak % 95.83 ile % 100 arasında değişmiştir. En düşük kök sayısı ve uzunluğu l yaşlı odundan hazırlanan çeliklerden elde edilirken, en yüksek değerlere ise dip kısımlarında 2 yaşlı odundan 5 boğum içeren çeliklerde ulaşılmıştır. Bu çalışmada, yaşlı ceviz ağacının yumuşak odun ve odun çeliklerinden elde edilen metanolik ekstr... more Bu çalışmada, yaşlı ceviz ağacının yumuşak odun ve odun çeliklerinden elde edilen metanolik ekstraktların, mung fasulyesi (Vigna radiata) ç eliklerinin k öklenmesi üzerine etkisi incelenmiştir. Her iki çelik tipinde de kromatogramlarm Rf l .0 bandında önemli düzeyde uyarıcı aktivite saptanmıştır. Ortamda oksin (IBA) bulunması durumunda, özellikle odun çeliklerinin spesifik Rf bandında sinerjistik etki gözlenmiştir. İki yönlü kağıt kromatografisi sonucunda, Rf bantlarmdaki kofaktör aktivitesinden birden fazla fenolik maddenin sorumlu olabileceği sonucuna varılmıştır.
