Reconfiguring the polarization, operational frequency, and radiation pattern can create an outcome of multi-functionality. A hybrid, frequency- and pattern-reconfigurable antenna with two V-shaped extrudes in a patch is proposed. To increase the bandwidth of the proposed antenna, the defected ground structure (DGS) phenomenon is presented, which is significant in the bandwidth of 3200 MHz from 2.7 GHz to 5.9 GHz, providing a gain of 3.5 dB. For this design, an FR-4 material was chosen as the substrate, and CST software was used for simulation. Using two p-i-n diodes, the projected antenna illustrates switching for multi-frequency bands such as 1.5, 2.6, 3.2, 5.1, and 8.1 GHz, with a constant radiation pattern and a main lobe direction of 155 degrees. It has C-band, WLAN, cognitive radio (CR), and Bluetooth applications. The proposed antenna displays radiat...

Several proteins associated with autophagy regulate host responses to viral infections. Ribonuclease L (RNase L) is activated during viral infections and cleaves cellular and viral single-stranded RNAs, including rRNAs in ribosomes. We demonstrate that direct activation of RNase L coordinates the activation of c-Jun N-terminal kinase (JNK) and double-stranded RNA-dependent protein kinase (PKR) to induce autophagy with hallmarks as accumulation of autophagic vacuoles, p62(SQSTM1) degradation and conversion of Microtubule-associated Protein Light Chain 3-I (LC3-I) to LC3-II. Accordingly, treatment of cells with pharmacological inhibitors of JNK or PKR and mouse embryonic fibroblasts (MEFs) lacking JNK1/2 or PKR showed reduced autophagy levels. Furthermore, RNase L-induced JNK activity promoted Bcl-2 phosphorylation, disrupted the Beclin1-Bcl...

This study has been conducted to find out frequency and degree of thrombocytopenia in patients suffering from falciparum malaria at a tertiary care hospital of Abbottabad. Methods: It was a descriptive case-control study being carried out at Ayub teaching hospital and Northern institute of Medical Sciences (NIMS) Abbottabad over a period of ten months. All patients with acute febrile illness without localizing signs were considered for study. A total 250 patients having falciparum malaria diagnosed by peripheral blood film examination have been studied. Complete blood counts were performed by Automated Beckman Coulter Analyzer. Blood films were examined by clinical pathologist for plasmodium falciparum via light microscopy using oil-immersion lens. Results: Out of 250 patients, 155(62%) were females and 95(38%) males with M:...

Infections and thrombosis remain the major causes for removal or change of catheters. We recently identified eight catheter defects that required replacement of catheters. Of these, two were due to patient negligence: one catheter was accidentally severed while the patient was shaving; the other was snipped during a haircut. One was believed to have a manufacturing defect. One catheter sustained needle-prick damage near the hub while irrigating the catheter. Two catheters were lost due to needle pricks during skin closure, and one catheter sustained similar damage while fixing the suture wing to the skin. The other two were damaged by suture material slicing through the lumen of the catheter as it expanded due to increased blood flow during repeated dialyses. Importantly, several of these injuries to the catheters were not immediately obvious and were detected only after repeated use of the catheters. Delayed bleeding of cuffed catheters necessitating change or removal has not been reported. Such bleeding may be due to manufacturing defects, patient carelessness, or iatrogenic causes. Avoiding the use of sutures can minimize the latter. Skin closure strips and a double transparent dressing may serve the same purposes, such as securing the catheter and aiding wound healing. In addition, these dressings have the added advantage of being waterproof, bacteria-proof, and cost effective.

Because Cx40 knockout could result in nonspecific effects, this discovery may not establish the causal relationship between Cx40 and reduced coupling. Using the same cell culture model, we aimed to address this uncertainty by using the rescue-of-function approach. Methods/Results: Electrical coupling between endothelial cells (hind-limb muscle origin) was determined by electrophysiology. LPS, H/R and concurrent LPS + H/R reduced coupling between WT but not Cx40-/- cells. The defect in Cx40-/- cells was rescued by ectopic expression of Cx40, after infecting the cells with adenovirus encoding Cx40. Cx40-/- cells were also engineered to express mutant Cx40 that lacked the carboxyl terminal domain beginning at residue 236 (Cx40Δ237-358) or ...

Qualitative methods are developed to have an in depth and broad understanding of the issues by means of their textual interpretation. The uniqueness of sampling in qualitative research is that the researcher generally do not focus on the representativeness of the sample but to choose or assemble those samples or particular cases that can help in further clarification and strengthen the understanding on the issue. As the basis of qualitative research is not the generalizability of findings but the transferability of results and therefore non probability purposive sampling is employed.
