However, this growth was not ordered, resulting in the use of different metadata standards, different policies for filling them, different interpretations, etc. As a consequence, the interoperability between Learning Object Repositories was weakened, mainly at the semantic level. In this article we propose the implementation of a shared vocabulary represented by an on- tology, which is validated based on queries made to it.

This implies generating mechanisms that enable the assessment of learning based on quantitative and qualitative criteria from which competence levels of learning are defined. In this sense, it is necessary to arbitrate the means to determine performance of students before real or simulated activities of the future professional context. In this work, authors propose an ontological model as part of the design of a software. It involves the definition of the evaluation activities for the learning process based on competencies in engineering careers, such as definition of level of domain indicators, criteria and evidence determination, weights and scores specification, which accredit professional performance and stimulate the necessary feedback to complete this process. In this way, authors seek to collaborate with professors, academic management staff and other university actors who want to improve the quality of learning through new educational paradigms such as learning by competencies, since carrying out an appropriate evaluation is a task pending in education in general, and in the training of engineers in particular, mainly because of its complexity.

However, in the field of education, the changes that have occurred are not enough to break with the classical learning schemes and there are lot of voices that are demanding radical changes in this context. Mainly one of the fundamental characteristics that educators has been working in is the need to adapt learning to the particular characteristics of the students in a sort of personalization of learning. This work proposes a conceptual framework that supports a software tool for the personalization of learning into technological environments, using semantic technologies such as ontologies and the portfolio concept. The latter is used as a tool to monitor learning.

This presents a new challenge for the assertive development of materials as a complementary activity to the planning of the didactic sequence carried out by the teacher to propose a learning path that contemplates real or simulated activities typical of the future professional context. In this work, the authors develop a learning object (LO) for teaching Intelligent Agents in competency-based learning environments. To this end, they apply a methodology that makes it possible to identify the general and specific competencies associated with the LO. At the same time, the methodology takes into account both the technical and pedagogical perspectives of this process, promoting the development of a quality object. The object developed is intended to be included in an Open Access Institutional Repository (OAIR) so that it is available for different subjects...

Thus, the use of ICTs in education allowed the classrooms to expand and transcend the limits of space and time, a situation that although it has enormous advantages, it is necessary to provide pedagogical characteristics that make them more user-friendly both as a teacher and as a student. The need of professor as a guide, planner, mentor and evaluator in the learning process is indisputable, that is technological developments should support these tasks taking into account didactic aspects and not only technical ones. One of the challenges that emerge is the need to personalize learning according to the student's abilities and the characteristics of the object that is learned. This paper present a conceptual model of an intelligent system that uses the concept of learning paths based on portfolios. For this, the system takes into account both the different levels of assimilation of knowled...

Among factors affecting e-learning success, proper feedback mechanisms are integral. As Dewey (1963) argues, learning is fundamentally social in nature. Thurmond, Wambach, Connors and Frey (2002) state that diversity in assessment and perception of interaction with others influences e-learning satisfaction considerably. The use of different evaluation methods in an e-learning system causes learners to establish a connection between themselves and their instructors, which in turn helps to ensure that their learning efforts are properly assessed (Sun Tsai, Finger, Chen, & Yeh, 2008). There are a variety of instruments for assessment; however, in an e-learning system, only a few of them are generally used, with the most popular being objective instruments such as multiple and simple choice. In the area of e-assessment, there are ...

This implies properly identifying the knowledge, skills and aptitudes that a professional need to practise, and with it, the curricular activities that will allow him to achieve it. The definition of based-competency curriculums it is a new paradigm that requires changes in the way of teaching. In this work the authors propose an ontology that conceptualizes the idea of competencies in the formulation of the curriculum of subjects, focused on university engineering careers. This ontology is part of an ontology network developed previously by the authors. The idea is to take a step forward in the definition of e-learning semantic tools that give support to teacher in the formulation of the competencies and the selection of teaching material and assessment tools, establishing relationships between all of them to achieve the objectives. In this way, this work provides a conceptual framework that facilitates the definition of competency-based curriculums and allows relating it with the teaching and assessment methodologies to achieve the defined competencies.

Particularly, in education domain the changes that occurred were not enough to break the traditional schemas of teaching. In this way, more and more people claim for real remodeling. Mainly, one of the most important subject is the necessity to adapt the teaching process to the particular characteristics of students, in a king of personalized learning. This work presents a conceptual framework, which proposes learning path based-portfolio as a way to personalize education. This framework uses semantic technologies, logical rules and agents to determine the student learning level and based on that propose course of actions.

One of them is to allow students self-regulation of their learning. Within this self-regulation process, students and teachers use technological tools to carry out their tasks. In general, these tools do not consider pedagogical aspects. Emerging approaches propose the use of electronic portfolios and semantic technologies to provide pedagogical characteristics that make tools more user-friendly for both teachers and students. This paper presents a conceptual model of an intelligent system to support self-regulated learning. This model is based on semantic technologies and uses the concepts of learning paths and student e-portfolios. For learning path generation, the system considers the different learning levels that a student should achieve and metrics that measure student progress. In this way, it proposes a learning path with the intention that the student achieves as highest learning level as possible.

Particularly, when it comes to e-learning, continuous assessment allows greater customization and efficiency in learning process and prevents students lost interest in their study. Also, each student has his own characteristics and learning skills that must be taken into account in order to keep learner`s interest. So, personalized monitoring is the key to guarantee the success of technology-based education. In this context, portfolio assessment emerge as the solution because is an easy way to allow teacher organize and personalize assessment according to students characteristic and need. A portfolio assessment can contain various types of assessment like formative assessment, summative assessment, hetero or self-assessment and use different instruments like multiple choice questions, conceptual maps, and essay among others. So, a portfolio assessment represents a compilation of all assessments must be solved by a student in a course, it documents progress and set targets. In previous work, it has been proposed a conceptual framework that consist of an ontology network named AOnet which is a semantic tool conceptualizing different types of assessments. Continuing that work, this paper presents a proposal to implement portfolios assessment in e-learning environments. The proposal consists of a semantic model that describes key components and relations of this domain to set the bases to develop a tool to generate, manage and perform portfolios assessment.

Recent research results have shown that constant assessment positively encourages this type of education, generating satisfaction in users of these technologies. The tool most widely used in this context for assessment are objective tests, particularly the tests single or multiple choice. But these are not sufficient to evaluate the different knowledge levels that arise as targets (like the levels in Bloom's taxonomy). Given this, it is necessary to have tools that allow for different types of assessment. This paper presents a proposal to implement portfolios assessment in e-learning environments. It consists of a semantic model that describes a tool to the creation, administration and performance of portfolios.

Although the use of these semantic technologies tend to enhance technology based educational process, the lack of validation to improve the quality of learning in their use, makes educator feel reluctant of using it. This paper presents the progress in an ontology network development, AONet, that conceptualizes the e-assessment domain with the aim of supporting the semiautomatic generation of it, taking into account not only technical aspects but also pedagogical one.
