Born in Bucharest, October 29th 1957. Studied at the Bucharest Polytechnic University, Faculty of Chemical Technology. Graduated in 1981, as chemistry engineer. 2003: PhD in Horticulture. I worked 3 years, from 1982 till 1985, in a rubber factory, as trainee engineer.Beginning with 1985 I work in the Laboratory of physical and chemical analyses for soil science, agrochemistry, and environment, at the National Research and Development Institute for Soil Science, Agrochemistry, and Environment – RISSA Bucharest, at first only as chemical analyst, specialized in soil, plant, and water analysis. My research activity is focused on geochemistry, plant nutrition, environment, organic agriculture, urban agriculture, complex studies on quality environment influence upon human and animal health.

Ecologic and conventional technologies were applied. The project aimed to implement a standardization system of the vegetal raw materials which can be used in the cosmetic industry. Sage, basilicum, and savory were subject of the experiments, at Jucu, Cluj County, Ungureni-Butimanu, Dâmboviţa County, and Secuieni, Neamţ County. The dominant soils in these areas are Fluvisols and Haplic Chernozems in the Jucu area, Chromic Luvisol in the Ungureni-Butimanu area, and Calcic Chernozem in the Secuieni area. The agrochemical analysis of the soils from the experimental fields highlighted soil fertility properties conservation both under ecologic and conventional growing technologies.

More than 20 years later, a new research on heavy metals (cadmium, cobalt, chromium, copper) cont... more More than 20 years later, a new research on heavy metals (cadmium, cobalt, chromium, copper) contents in the soil cover of the Pantelimon – Brănesti area located East of the Bucharest Municipality and exposed for several decades to the influence of industrial emissions from two non-ferrous metallurgy plants is presented. A 5,912.72 ha area was investigated, 544 samples taken by geometric horizons (0-20; 20-40; 40-60 cm) from 215 points have been analyzed. The dominant soils are: Preluvosols, Chernozems, Phaeozems. The analytical data showed that all the heavy metals contents are below the maximum allowable limits and of the alarm thresholds. Higher cadmium and copper concentrations have been registered in the 40-60 cm layer and higher chromium and copper concentrations in the 0-20 cm layer. Aiming to increase the use of natural resources and unexplored opportunities in industrial and ag... more Aiming to increase the use of natural resources and unexplored opportunities in industrial and agricultural practices, the marine algae biomass, that causes serious environmental problems in the Romanian Black Sea coast, was used in association with another two organic wastes, farmyard manure from cattle-breeding farms and sewage sludge resulted from the waste water treatment, to produce a compost suitable as organic fertilizer for plant cultivation in ecologic farming systems. Four variants of compost, first representing equal parts (33.33%) of those three components, and the other three proportions of 50% of each component, the difference being ensured in a ratio of 25% of each of the other two components, have been tested in a field experiment to assess their effects, both on the agro-chemical properties of the soil and on the sunflower plants development and crops. Mostly direct proportionality relationships between the analyzed heavy metalsin soils of Fagaras Depression have been set, suggesting their common origin, namely,altered minerals from crystalline rocks on the northern slope of Fagaras Mountains.

Six soil profiles were analyzed from the southern part of Oltenia, the area of sandy soils, from ... more Six soil profiles were analyzed from the southern part of Oltenia, the area of sandy soils, from the point of view of main physical and chemical characteristics and of the selenium abundance. Three of them are located around the Desa locality and three around the Dăbuleni locality. The predominance of coarse texture was established, along with a diverse reaction, from moderately acid to moderately alkaline, very low humus, total nitrogen, mobile phosphorus and potassium contents, and a low to extremely low total cation exchange capacity. The A horizon makes exception as its humus and total nitrogen contents are slightly increased. The total selenium contents of these soils oscillate between 20 and 190 μg·kg -1 , with a 97 μg·kg -1 average value, and the mobile selenium contents belong to the interval 5 to 41 μg·kg -1 , with a 22 μg·kg -1 average value. ABSTRACT 96 soil samples from the upper horizon of soils from the surroundings of Iassy municipal... more ABSTRACT 96 soil samples from the upper horizon of soils from the surroundings of Iassy municipality were taken in which mercury contents were determined, using atomic absorption spectrometry, complete with cold vapors technique, after digesting soil samples with a concentrated sulphuric and nitric acids mixture. The analytical data were statistically computed, spreading (σ, cv%) and grouping (average value , Me, Mo) parameters were calculated. Mercury total contents in the soils of the studied areas are, in a 77% proportion, in the normal values domain. Higher values, very few, rarely exceed the alert and intervention thresholds indicated by the MAPPM order nr.756/1997. • By soil types, the mercury concentration registers the highest values in Fluvisols and Regosols associated with other soil types and the lowest in Regosols, but this distribution is not so significant as • The distribution by land use shows higher values in a meadow and a vineyard, the latter due to organo-mercury pesticides use. High values also occur in the urban area. • The mercury contents in the soils of the studied area don&#39;t represent a hazard for plant nutrition and nor for people, whether they live in the area and/or consume food (fish) produced in the area. • The areas where higher mercury values were registered researches must be carried on to determine if the exceeding values are merely accidents, as the authors suppose, or more high values could be registered, in which case measures to reduce the impact or diminish the harmful emissions must be taken.

Soil fertility properties, irrigation water quality, mineral nutrition, and some vegetables miner... more Soil fertility properties, irrigation water quality, mineral nutrition, and some vegetables mineral composition were studied in the frame of a project regarding yield quality monitoring in certified organic vegetable farms, in two farms placed on the outskirts of Bucharest Municipality which provide products for the town’s organic market. Chemical analysis of the soil samples collected from the two farms reflects a good fertility, close to the natural one of this region soils, with well-balanced organic matter, total nitrogen, accessible phosphorus and potassium contents. The nitrates contents concord with the plants nutrition demands and don’t present the risk to accumulate in vegetables or to leach into the groundwater. The aim of this paper is to establish the abundance of heavy metals in the soils affected by the ... more The aim of this paper is to establish the abundance of heavy metals in the soils affected by the past Rosia Montana gold and silver ore mining, and in currently unaffected soils that will be impacted by the proposed Rosia Montana project that foresees the expansion of the ore exploitation and a new processing facility. The soil cover of the Rosia Montana area consists of five soil types: Eutricambosols, Districambosols, Regosols, Lithosols, and Aluviosols. The first two types are prevalent; they cover 73.83% of the total researched surface (1,646 ha). In the soils from the areas where mining activities have been carried out, the total content of the heavy metals (Cd, Co, Cr, Cu, Mn, Ni, Pb, Zn) vary from the region's pedogeochemical background level up to the alert threshold for heavy metals pollution set down in the Order of the Ministry of Waters, Forests, and Environment Protection no. 756/1997. The analysis of soils from and surrounding the existing ore processing facilities shows that the heavy metals contents in few cases is above the intervention threshold, for copper, lead and zinc. The soils generally have low heavy metals contents and the values are at the region's pedogeochemical background level. The barren rocks, generally, have low heavy metals contents, close to the clark values. Taking all this into account, as well as the technology that the Canadian company intends to apply, there is a low probability that a significant heavy metals pollution of the soils left un-stripped would occur due to the proposed project.

High values also occur in the urban area. • The mercury contents in the soils of the studied area don&#39;t represent a hazard for plant nutrition and nor for people, whether they live in the area and/or consume food (fish) produced in the area. • The areas where higher mercury values were registered researches must be carried on to determine if the exceeding values are merely accidents, as the authors suppose, or more high values could be registered, in which case measures to reduce the impact or diminish the harmful emissions must be taken.

Soil fertility properties, irrigation water quality, mineral nutrition, and some vegetables miner... more Soil fertility properties, irrigation water quality, mineral nutrition, and some vegetables mineral composition were studied in the frame of a project regarding yield quality monitoring in certified organic vegetable farms, in two farms placed on the outskirts of Bucharest Municipality which provide products for the town’s organic market. Chemical analysis of the soil samples collected from the two farms reflects a good fertility, close to the natural one of this region soils, with well-balanced organic matter, total nitrogen, accessible phosphorus and potassium contents. The nitrates contents concord with the plants nutrition demands and don’t present the risk to accumulate in vegetables or to leach into the groundwater. Ecologic and conventional technologies were applied. The project aimed to implement a standardization system of the vegetal raw materials which can be used in the cosmetic industry. Sage, basilicum, and savory were subject of the experiments, at Jucu, Cluj County, Ungureni – Butimanu, Dâmboviţa County, and Secuieni, Neamţ County. The dominant soils in these areas are Fluvisols and Haplic Chernozems in the Jucu area, Chromic Luvisol in the Ungureni – Butimanu area, and Calcic Chernozem in the Secuieni area. The agrochemical analysis of the soils from the experimental fields highlighted soil fertility properties conservation both under ecologic and conventional growing technologies.

The aim of this paper is to establish the abundance of heavy metals in the soils affected by the ... more The aim of this paper is to establish the abundance of heavy metals in the soils affected by the past Rosia Montana gold and silver ore mining, and in currently unaffected soils that will be impacted by the proposed Rosia Montana project that foresees the expansion of the ore exploitation and a new processing facility. The soil cover of the Rosia Montana area consists of five soil types: Eutricambosols, Districambosols, Regosols, Lithosols, and Aluviosols. The first two types are prevalent; they cover 73.83% of the total researched surface (1,646 ha). In the soils from the areas where mining activities have been carried out, the total content of the heavy metals (Cd, Co, Cr, Cu, Mn, Ni, Pb, Zn) vary from the region's pedogeochemical background level up to the alert threshold for heavy metals pollution set down in the Order of the Ministry of Waters, Forests, and Environment Protection no. 756/1997. The analysis of soils from and surrounding the existing ore processing facilities shows that the heavy metals contents in few cases is above the intervention threshold, for copper, lead and zinc. The soils generally have low heavy metals contents and the values are at the region's pedogeochemical background level. The barren rocks, generally, have low heavy metals contents, close to the clark values. Taking all this into account, as well as the technology that the Canadian company intends to apply, there is a low probability that a significant heavy metals pollution of the soils left un-stripped would occur due to the proposed project.
