It identifies an emerging consensus regarding the meaning of personal meaning as a motivational construct, and demonstrates its connection to other closely related motivational theories, including self-determination theory, positive psychology, humanistic psychology, interpersonal neurobiology, and narrative approaches to self integration. Specifically it explores the definition of personal meaning as involving a sense of purpose and coherence in orienting individuals to future possibilities and providing a basis for hope in the fulfillment of their aspirations. It identifies a cognitive-behavioral bias in the field, focusing on goal-focused behavior and neglecting the emotional and interpersonal dimensions of personal meaning. The article demonstrates how the relationship factor, specifically self-defining dialogue with significa...

Yet, in reality, it includes some of the most difficult, painful, and challenging experiences that are commonly encountered during the course of a lifetime. This article offers an overview of PP and explores the emergence of second wave positive psychology (SWPP), a field concerned with the philosophical and conceptual complexities of the notion of "positive," and considers the dialectical nature of flourishing through the dynamic interplay of both positive and negative experiences.

It describes collaborative efforts to define the construct of meaning, establish measures of global and situational meaning, and clarify universal characteristics of meaning and related interventions that apply across cultures. The article identifies key points of consensus and areas of ongoing debate among meaning researchers regarding the conceptualization of meaning, and clarifies efforts to establish a more unified meaning research and practice agenda.

The paper clarifies the meaning of authenticity, as defined within the existential-humanistic tradition, as a multi-dimensional construct. Thus understood, authenticity assumes a much larger place in the catalogue of virtues and related character strengths than is typically allocated within positive psychology. It not only interfaces with many of the strengths identified by Peterson and Seligman, but also accounts for how individuals integrate their distinctive value orientations into their core sense of self and personal identity. In all these respects, authenticity emerges as a central element of the normative framework of positive psychology, and thus highlights the essential continuity between the traditions of existential-humanistic a...
