The factsheet shows a panoramic view of empirical evidence linking climate hazards and the subsequent economic impacts on ports' economies.

In these survey, tourists are asked how they would choose between adaptation policies , or change their choice of islands facing climate change impacts, as well as about their perceptions of the image of these destinations, socio-economic characteristics, and some other information about the tourist trip. The main part of the survey is concerned with the choice cards. In the choice scenarios, two alternative sets of adaptation policies to climate change impacts are presented, and tourists are asked to choose between one of the options for which they had to pay an extra price per day during their stay, or the alternative of "no policy option" (at price 0 €). These policies are described with the aid of words and images. The discrete choice questions should allow to estimate how much tourists do value (WTP) the potential ad...

Regarding foreign tourists, the United Kingdom shows the highest figures, slightly over 5 million tourists in 2018, representing approximately a third of the tourists in the Canary Islands. Germans, with around 3 million, represent 20% of tourist arrivals, and in the third place in terms of arrivals are the tourists from the rest of Spain. Taken together, the Nordic countries represent 11% of tourist arrivals, while other relevant countries ranging between 2 and 4% of the arrivals are the

Abstract Evidence of tourism as a strategy to empower local communities around national parks rem... more Abstract Evidence of tourism as a strategy to empower local communities around national parks remains elusive. Scholars argue that a prerequisite to empowering community members is to decipher their ideas, beliefs and perceptions. Social representations (SR) theory provides a framework to engage in such a task yet very few studies have taken on such analysis. The paper presents a study of the SR across 10 communities surrounding the Langue de Barbarie National Park in Senegal using survey and interview data. Specifically, we examine their representations towards tourism and the park as a basis to better inform their empowerment process. We conducted a cluster analysis, grouping community members responses into polemical, emancipated, and hegemonic representations. Most participants held polemical representations and perceived tourism and the park as a continuity of colonialism. Others with emancipated representations advocated for alternative tourism structures. The hegemonic representations on the other hand assessed tourism based on the direct impact it provides to individual members of their communities. For each cluster, we propose a form of empowerment that is better aligned with their social representations as a catalyst for their capacity to carve a meaningful space in tourism.

In addition, transportation costs, distance from the main economic centres, and low economies of scale are responsible for economic costs differentials in production and consumption activities. The purpose of this paper is to link the economic costs of insularity and the ecological costs associated with small islands development. Insular ecological costs are defined as the extra costs resulting from island development processes interacting with fragile ecosystems. We try to identify the factors that would make monetized ecological costs in islands higher than in mainland regions. The empirical part of the paper focuses on the case of managing urban solid waste in the Canary Islands. The comparison of a set of environmental indicators gives some support to the idea of ecological cost differences between islands and other geographical regions.
