(ISBN 013792714-2) Basic Engineering Circuit Analysis by J. David Irwin and C.H. Wu is an introductory textbook to electrical engineering circuit analysis suitable for students in many engineering disciplines, including electrical engineering, computer engineering, and computer science. It provides a solid foundation of basic electrical concepts and circuits. A broad range of topics are covered in well-organized, self-contained parts starting from all the basic concepts in electrical engineering and circuit analysis to more sophisticated, specialized topics. The materials covered include components, Ohm’s law, Kirchhoffs laws, series and parallel c i r cu i t s , nodal a n d loop analysis, Thevenin’s and Norton’s equivalent circuits, resistive and reactive circuits, trans i en t analysis, ac c i r cu i t analysis, poly-phase circuits, mutual inductance, Laplace transform, and Fourier analysis. Several worked examples and applications are included throughout the book, which clarify the theory and strengthen the basic concepts. The integration of relevant up-to-date practical applications emphasizes the usefulness of the material and completes the picture in the student’s minds. The textbook is presented in an excellent and clear way that helps the student and the instructor through the abundance ofworked examples, drill problems and extension exercises, chapter summaries, problem-solving strategies, and practice problems with nice hints. My only remark about this excellent book is to extend the treatment of operational amplifiers and to give introduction to nonlinear electronic circuits. Also, I’d prefer if the book included a simulation tool and more illustrated examples, which are already handled by the author, but in a short way. Finally, the book is very useful and a remarkable contribution to the field of electrical engineering.

The chosen solution for the transmit section is based on Laurent's approximation of the nonlinear GMSK modulator. This enables burst shaping in the I/Q domain thereby solving the problem of power ramping. Also, up to GPRS class 12 is supported. The receive section on the other hand consists of a low power dual mode continuous-time 61 ADC for I and Q, supporting ZIF and LIF modes of operation and achieving typically 12.5 bit of resolution under production conditions. An on-chip PLL, which supplies all blocks with various clock frequencies, additionally supports clock jitter suppression. The audio section comprises a codec supporting standard formats such as IIS and PCM. It features mono/stereo signaling from various sources in 16 bit quality as well as high-drive buffers for 4 single-ended loads (capacitively coupled). The whole chip is powered from a 1.5/2.65 V supply voltage and consumes 22 mW in paging mode.

Its data foundation consists of two empirical surveys on NXP semiconductors Business Baseband's R&D programme in China, on internal NXP documents and information, on interviews with non-NXP expatriates, and on a thorough literature analysis, comparing other studies on the subject with the NXP surveys. The resulting KR&DI span the specific R&D dimensions of (1) soft aspects such as political, economical, cultural, risk and technology aspects, (2) strategy aspects including Communication, (3) R&D activities including knowledge transfer, location choice, entry motives and know-how protection, (4) IP rights and ethics and (5) HR and managerial aspects. Due to their form as cards, closely modelled on the European Foundation for Quality management (EFQM) toolbox format, the indicators can easily be adapted and deployed by other companies involved in Chinese R&D.

The circuit cancels both the signal dependent and the constant clockfeedthrough term. It is shown that this concept can be used to derive various sample-and-hold circuits, depending on the desired clock frequency, accuracy, and power dissipation. I.

The solution is based on Laurent's approximation of the non-linear GMSK modulator by a bank of linear, pre-encoded modulators, thus enabling burst shaping in the I/Q domain and therefore solving the problem of power ramping. The solution is compatible to all major transmitter architectures offering an I/Q interface.

It is shown that for applications with high transmission rates and low to medium accuracy, MOSFET-only R-2R ladders in combination with switched-current memory cells are ideally suited, due to their current mode nature as well as their power and area efficiency. It is expected that data rates well above 100 MS/s can be obtained.

Applying topologies with only one input commutator to switched-currents allows the design of high speed polyphase input branches with reduced distortion. These concepts were utilized in the implementation of a linear phase 19 tap FIR filter chip with an amplitude response tailored to video applications. It is expected that the prototype filter implemented in a 0.5~m CMOS process will operate at an input sampling rate of 135MHz and with a decimating factor of 5.
