A simple mathematical model is used to illustrate stress concentration arising due to thermal stresses in tube wall and HAZs. Finite element model and analysis were carried out utilizing finite element analysis commercial codes. Combination of thermal stress due to temperature difference determine fracture region. Experimental and simulation results of inside temperature of tube are observed and similar relation have been found. Observation of heat affected blocks indicates near region of HAZ. It is observed that different air flow rates have some effects in reducing thermal stress. Analysis shows that inserting a small pipe inside the first block will reduce thermal stress generation inside HAZs and eventual fracture of the vacuum tube. It is expected that this ...

This study evaluated the effects of three transport media i.e., well water (WW), pond water (PW) ... more This study evaluated the effects of three transport media i.e., well water (WW), pond water (PW) and mixture of the two (WPW; 1 : 1) and durations (1, 3, 6 and 9 hrs) on the mortality and physiological responses in silver carp, Hypophthalmichthys molitrix fingerlings in a transport simulation at 400 g/l loading density. While the total mortality was lower than 9% until 6 hrs of transport, it was very high (49 - 60%) at 9 hrs across all three treatment media. The highest level of cortisol was measured in the fingerlings simulated using WPW while the lowest level was detected in the fingerlings sampled form WW. The level of cortisol observed in the fingerlings simulated using PW was not different from other two media. Between durations, the levels of cortisol observed were significantly different. The highest chloride level was measured in the fingerlings simulated using WW while the lowest level was observed in the fingerlings sampled from WPW. PW did not result in different chloride...

As Bengali, the mother tongue of Bangladesh and eastern India, is the seventh most spoken language in the world, we translated and validated the Enhanced Asian Rome III questionnaire (EAR3Q) in this language. Methods The EAR3Q was translated in Bengali as per guideline from the Rome Foundation. The translated questionnaire was validated prospectively on Bengali-speaking healthy subjects (HS, n = 30), and patients with functional dyspepsia (FD, n = 35), irritable bowel syndrome (IBS, n = 40) and functional constipation (FC, n = 12) diagnosed by clinicians using the Rome III criteria. The subjects were asked to fill-in the questionnaire again after 2 weeks, to check for its reproducibility. Results During translation, the original and the backward translated English versions of the questionnaire demonstrated high concordance. Sensitivity of the Bengali questionnaire to diagnose patients with FD, IBS, FC, and HS was 100%, 100%, 75%, and 100%, respectively, considering diagnosis by the clinicians as the gold standard. On test-retest reliability analysis, Kappa values for FD, IBS, FC, and HS were 1.0, 1.0, 0.83, and 1.0, respectively. The Bengali questionnaire detected considerable overlap of FD symptoms among patients with IBS, IBS among patients with FD, and FD among patients with FC, which were not detected by the clinicians. Conclusions We successfully translated and validated the EAR3Q in Bengali. We believe that this translated questionnaire will be useful for clinical evaluation and research on FGIDs in the Bengali-speaking population.

There are several EUS techniques used in clinical practice; strain (compression) EUS is the most common technique that allows real-time visualisation of the elastographic map on the screen. There is increasing evidence that EUS can be used to measure the mechanical properties of musculoskeletal tissue in clinical practice, with the future potential for early diagnosis to both guide and monitor therapy. This review describes the various EUS techniques available for clinical use, presents the published evidence on musculoskeletal applications of EUS and discusses the technical issues, limitations and future perspectives of this method in the assessment of the musculoskeletal system. Ultrasound elastography (EUS) is a recently developed ultrasound-based method, which allows the qualitative visual or quantitative measurements of ...

Total bacterial count (TBC), total coliform (TC), faecal coliform (FC), faecal streptococci (FS) and total Vibrio?like colonies were enumerated using serial dilution and spread plate techniques. Variation of bacterial loads among the fishes of various feeding habits was insignificant. The TBC, TC, FC, FS and total Vibrio counts ranged from 1.72 ± 0.68 × 108 to 7.00 ± 3.39 × 108, 2.49 ± 1.72 × 106 to 6.55 ± 3.00 × 106, 1.58 ± 1.29 × 106 to 2.76 ± 1.42 × 106, 4.83 ± 2.09 × 104 to 1.19 ± 0.46 × 105 and 2.06 ± 0.67 × 103 to 3.68 ± 2.02 × 105, respectively among various feeding groups. However, gill and gut had significantly higher density of TBC, TC and FC than that of the skin. High counts of indicator organisms indicate that market fishes of all varieties could be the potential reservoirs in transmission of pathogenic bacteria responsible for diarrhoeal dise...

DVT associated with protein C and protein S deficiencies are rare genetic abnormalities that cause thrombophilia and lead to thrombosis. Here we describe a case of 55-year old male who presented with recurrent DVT of left lower limb and eventually diagnosed as a case of DVT due to protein C and protein S deficiency with hyperhomocystinaemia.. The particular interest in this case report is that it is important to consider sceening for thrombophilia incase of DVT with uncertain aetiology. It has generally been accepted that the re-infection rate is higher in countries with a high prevalence of H. pylori infection. Short-term follow-up studies support this assumption but no long-term studies are available to confirm or refute this assertion. The present study was aimed to define the long-term H. pylori re-infection rate (6 years after successful eradication) in duodenal ulcer patients. Methods: In a previous study, 90 patients were successfully eradicated for H. pylori and followed-up for 24 months. 17/90 were found to be re-infected (18% re-infection rate per year in the first 12 months) [Gastroenterology 2001;792–798]. The remaining 73 patients were targeted for long-term follow-up. 26/73 were lost to follow-up; 6 symptomatic patients were tested H. pylori positive in the period bet...

It would surely be better for one responsible person to hear the evidence from all parties, come to a decision and take the responsibility for making sure that the decision is acted on, whether this is a prosecution, a care order, or the alerting of schoolteachers, casualty departments, and social services departments to a child being at risk of serious abuse. Such an examining magistrate could also, with advantage, replace the amateurs who at present preside over hearings involving the wellbeing of families and children.
