To prevent suicide in middle childhood, it is important
to identify in this age group some thoughts about death
that may evolve into suicidal ideation. The objective of
the research was to identify the possibility of suicidal
ideation in children, reviewing the presence of
thoughts, ideas and desires for their death also identifying
the conceptualizations about life, death and suicide
of these children and girls between 6 to 11 years old.
An exploration of death thoughts was carried out with
123 children whom were attending basic education,
from 6 to 11 years old, through a semi-structured qualitative
interview. In the results we observed differences
according to age in the concepts of life, death and
suicide, confirming that the acquisition of these notions
is a gradual process that is influenced by sociocultural
and religious beliefs. Children in middle childhood
present thoughts about their own death and in some
cases ideas and wishes of death that may be associated
with suicidal ideation.
Key words: Thoughts of death, Suicidal behavior,
Suicidal ideation, Suicide, Middle childhood.
