From a student sample of 154 members (639 dyadic relations among team members) in 32 work teams of a hospitality institute in the People's Republic of China, results revealed that team identification is positively related to interpersonal helping behavior. The positive relationship between team identification and interpersonal helping behavior is weaker when team members perceive high levels of competitive goal climate. Implications for research and practice are discussed.

Design/methodology/approach – A structured questionnaire survey was used to collect data by 218 employees in a service-oriented private firm in the People's Republic of China. Findings – The findings indicated that trust in leader mediated the relationship between servant leadership and subordinates' job satisfaction. Also, the positive effect of servant leadership on subordinates' trust in leader and job satisfaction was stronger for short-tenure subordinates than that for long-tenure subordinates. Originality/value – This paper enriches the existing leadership literature and contributes to the research into how and why servant leadership may influence subordinates' attitudes.

It offers a way of going beyond simple descriptions to a quantitative approach. A simple yet comprehensive model is proposed which consists of four aspects focusing on four related questions: Who are the key initiators of the TNA studies? What are the levels of interest in the studies (i.e. organization, process, group and individual)? What methods of analysis are used? What is the intended outcome of the analysis? Based on these, four hypotheses are proposed. A literature search produced a total of 118 articles, of which 44 were randomly picked for detailed review. As expected, the literature was dominated by “supply‐led” players, i.e. trainers and academics, but with an unexpectedly strong emphasis on the “demand‐led” aspects of the organisation, especially its business results and growth.

This research builds a system dynamics model that attempts to link the enrollment goals of the Scout Association of Hong Kong (SAHK) with the reality of a Hong Kong's declining birth rate and restrictive immigration policies. The initial model indicates that larger proportions of available youth would have to be attracted to scouting to maintain their current market share with respect to youth served, and this would have to be greatly expanded to accommodate membership growth goals. Without additional immigration or a higher birth rate, the SAHK will have to obtain overall levels of youth participation at almost three times their current level, even with higher quality levels that attract a higher proportion of eligible youth.

A double population chain model is used to identify population dynamics at the city and organization level. The model shows that membership would be greatly affected and that the response could either be downsizing or restructuring of activities. A multi-attribute model is then used to identify the preferences in all age groups of scouting to identify the criteria that they value in a after school activity and which activities compete with scouting.

Design/methodology/approach ‐ The authors collected data from 227 human resource management professionals in Hong Kong, the People's Republic of China and used exploratory factor analysis and multiple regression for data analysis. Findings ‐ The results supported the construct validity of the preliminary measure of HPHRP with the inclusion of a measure on OSH. The mediating role of perceived safety climate in the relationship of HPHRP and organizational performance was also confirmed. Research limitations/implications ‐ This research highlights the importance of OSH on HPHRP in Hong Kong organizations. Results explored that HPHRP positively influences organizational performance through the mediator of perceived safety climate. Originality/value ‐ This paper adds value by improving the understanding of the importance of OSH in human resource management in China. It reveals an important path, HRM managers' perceived safety climate, through which HPHRP is transmitted to organizational performance.

Design/methodology/approach – A structured questionnaire survey was used to collect data from 135 undergraduate students at the Institute For Tourism Studies, Macao, and obtained scores for the four learning styles: activist, theorist, reflector, and pragmatist. Findings – The findings indicated that students scored strong preferences in activist and reflector and attained moderate preferences in theorist and pragmatist. The findings also highlighted the differences in learning styles with respect to students' gender, programme, and the relationship with academic results. Practical implications – The main implications of these findings are that the use of Learning Styles Questionnaire may help individual learners to identify their learning behaviours and determine their skills acquisition for industry.
