Although grading and the study of some morphologic variables may be of value as prognostic parameters, the variability of postoperative disease free survival in patients with World Health Organization Grade 2 oligodendroglioma indicates that the biologic behavior of this entity remains unknown. The objective of the current study was to evaluate immunoexpression of the proliferation index (PI), epidermal growth factor receptor (EGFR), and bcl-2 as prognostic factors in patients with Grade 2 oligodendroglioma. In a series of 19 cases of pure Grade 2 oligodendroglioma, we assessed the mitotic count, labeling index for MIB-1 and PCNA, and immunoreactivity for EGFR and bcl-2 with semiquantitative parameters and compared these with postoperative disease free survival. Statistical analyses using the Cox-Mantel nonparametric test and Spearman correlation coefficient were used to evaluate the data. Disease free survival was significantly shorter when the MIB-1 PI was > 5% (P = 0.0096) and the PCNA PI was > 9% (P = 0.00011) and when mitoses were observed (P = 0.00004). The paired variables also were found to correlate: MIB-1 versus PCNA (P = 0.04), MIB-1 versus mitotic count (P = 0.0184), and PCNA versus mitotic count (P = 0.0079). In all cases, there was immunoreactivity for EGFR; conversely, all cases were negative for bcl-2 in the cells with an oligodendrocyte phenotype. The PI was found to correlate with the postoperative disease free survival in patients with Grade 2 oligodendroglioma; therefore, the authors suggest a possible subdivision of Grade 2 oligodendrogliomas into two groups based on the mitotic count and PI.

Our objective is to describe the clinical, morphological and immunohistochemical features of four cases of GSa and to discuss its pathogenetic mechanisms. The male:female ratio was 3:1. The mean age was 39 years, ranging from 19 to 48. Headache was the commonest clinical symptom. All patients underwent craniotomy with microsurgery and total resection of the tumor. Diagnosis was suspected due to microscopic architecture and confirmed by detection of reticulin fibers through histochemical techniques. Immunohistochemical analysis was positive for p53 in both glial and sarcomatous cells in all four cases. EGFR was focally positive in glial cells in one case. Our findings support monoclonal origin of GSa involving the TP53 tumor-suppressor gene. However, alternative pathways cannot be ruled out.

Available information on the efficacy and safety of tadalafil on Latin American men comes from reports where data is mixed with other populations.Aim. To assess the efficacy and safety of tadalafil in Latin American men with erectile dysfunction (ED).Methods. Integrated analyses of data from four 12-week, randomized, double-blind, parallel, placebo-controlled trials conducted in Latin America that assessed the efficacy and safety of tadalafil in 406 Latin American men with ED of diverse etiology and severity assigned to placebo (N = 113), 10-mg tadalafil (N = 39), or 20-mg tadalafil (N = 254).Main Outcome Measures. Efficacy was assessed by International Index of Erectile Function Erectile Function (IIEF-EF) domain, questions 2 to 5 of the Sexual Encounter Profile and the first Global Assessment Question. Adverse events (AEs) reported by all enrolled patients were collected.Results. Latin American patients treated with 10 or 20 mg of tadalafil had a significant mean improvement of 4.92 and 9.78, respectively, in the IIEF-EF domain score from baseline compared with 2.24 on placebo (P = 0.003 and P < 0.001, respectively, vs. placebo). At both doses, the mean success rate for penetration was 75 and 86%, respectively, compared with 56% on placebo (P ≤ 0.001), the mean success rate for intercourse was 55% and 78%, compared with 36% on placebo (P < 0.001 vs. placebo), and 62% and 91% of patients, respectively, reported improved erections at the end point, vs. 43% on placebo (P = 0.160 and P < 0.001, respectively, vs. placebo). The most frequent AEs were headache, dyspepsia, and back pain.Conclusions. 10 or 20 mg tadalafil was an effective, safe, and well-tolerated therapy for Latin American men with ED of diverse etiology despite of ED severity. The current research is designed to study the experience of communication about ED among men with ED, partners of men with ED, and physicians who treat ED. Methods: Qualitative research with 10 men with ED, 10 female partners of men with ED, and 15 physicians who treat men with ED, was used to formulate questions pursued in quantitative research with larger samples of men with ED (N = 449), partners of men with ED (N = 429), and physicians who treat men with ED (N = 389), concerning communication about ED among these parties. Results: Men with ED and partners of men with ED reported strikingly similar perceptions of ED, positive responses to communicating about ED, and negative responses to failing to communicate about ED. Results concerning communication about ED with physicians, preferred attributes of oral therapy for ED, and correlates of PDE5 inhibitor therapy use are reported in Part II of this publication. Conclusions: These findings can be used to guide clinical counselling and patient education to facilitate communication about ED and treatment seeking for this condition where appropriate. ß 2005 WPMH GmbH. There are very few reports describing chromosomal abnormalities in these tumors, none of which are recurrent. In this study we report on a mature teratoma case with clonal chromosomal alterations which include monosomies of chromosomes 6, 14, 16, and 21; trisomies of chromosomes 14 and 21; and deletions of Xq, 5p, 16p, and 17p. Comparative genomic hybridization evaluation of the sample revealed a normal profile. These findings are discussed together with the cytogenetic reports on other cases of ovarian teratomas described in the literature.

There is controversy regarding the management of these tumors. The objective of this article is to analyze the treatment and results in a series of ten cases. From a series of 107 patients that had been operated on for jugular foramen tumors between 1987 and 2005, ten had meningiomas. The clinical, histological and imaging findings, as well as the outcome of these cases, were reviewed. A high incidence of malignant or aggressive tumors (six cases) was found. Gross total resection (Simpson I and II) was achieved in five patients. Four patients with meningotheliomatous meningiomas are alive, with a mean follow-up time of 71.8 months (6.5 years). Two patients (one with anaplastic type and one with papillary type) died in the immediate postoperative period. Four patients (two with papillary type, one with microcystic type and one with anaplastic type) died because of disease progression, with a mean survival time of 35 months. Radical removal of benign jugular foramen meningiomas is possible. The incidence of postoperative deficit of cranial nerves is higher than in other benign tumors of the jugular foramen. A high incidence of aggressive (malignant) tumors was observed in this series.
