Hence, the objective of the present study was to provide a complete macroscopic and microscopic description of the equine embryo/fetus at various gestational ages. Thirty-four embryos/fetuses were aged based on their crown rump length (CRL), and submitted to macroscopic description, biometry, light and scanning microscopy, as well as the alizarin technique. All observed developmental changes were chronologically ordered and described. As examples of the main observed features, an accentuated cervical curvature was observed upon macroscopic examination in all specimens. In the nervous system, the encephalic fourth ventricle and the encephalic vesicles forebrain, midbrain, and hindbrain, were visualized from Day 19 (ovulation ϭ Day 0). The thoracic and pelvic limbs were also visualized; their extremities gave rise to the hoof during development from Day 27. Development of other structures such as pigmented optical vesicle, liver, tail, cardiac area, lungs, and dermal vascularization started on Days 25, 25, 19, 19, 34, and 35, respectively. Light and scanning microscopy facilitated detailed examinations of several organs, e.g., heart, kidneys, lungs, and intestine, whereas the alizarin technique enabled visualization of ossification. Observations in this study contributed to the knowledge regarding equine embryogenesis, and included much detailed data from many specimens collected over a long developmental interval.

It is presumed that the studied area, considered as an emerging urban fabric stratum that lacks in a large part of basic urbanization infrastructures, holds in itself the potential for a future readaptation and complementation of its roadway. The methodology that will be used in this analytical approach of the urban form, known as Space Syntax, seeks to provide: support for decision making; tools to calibrate these decisions; evaluate proposed scenarios; as well as combining other methods and tools. This methodology enables to confirm something we probably already knowthe need to complete 'mesh design' in contemporary cities urbanized areas that have a diverse constitution from that ones observed in more sedimented and stable fields (consolidated city). As a result of the research done for this article, there will be presented some possibilities of transformation of the neighborhood roadway according to diverse scenarios, but based on the dynamics of the place itself, and also with the surrounding urban fabric.

The scientific concept of "Global Climate Changes" is very difficult for most of the population, ... more The scientific concept of "Global Climate Changes" is very difficult for most of the population, who tend to understand it as an abstract problem, distant in time and dislodged in space. Therefore, it is important to promote education based on the deepening of knowledge on the subject. The present study describes the idea and development of a digital educational interdisciplinary and systemic game on the influences of climate changes on marine and coastal environments. The game is aimed at students in junior high school and high school. The script, game design and level design documents are already finished. The scenario of the game is a coastal fictitious city called Apicum and the main character will have to understand the causes and effects of climate changes on the coastal and marine environments of the city. Throughout the levels, he/she will gain points of "Environment", "Society" and "Economy", the three pillars of sustainability.

In this paper we present novel, more extensive experiments using the SIM in a well-known 3D face database available on the Biometric Experimentation Environment (BEE) to confirm qualitatively that the SIM is a effective, discriminatory measure. The experiments were performed based on range image registration by using two different methods: Iterative Closest Point (ICP) and Simulated Annealing (SA). By computing the SIM after the registration of two 3D face images one can identify if those images come from the same subject or not. With our SA-based approach we obtained high verification rate scores, which is indeed one of the main goals of the Face Recognition Grand Challenge 2006.

The method is based on mean (H) and Gaussian (K) surface curvatures sign maps (HK-sign maps) computed from both registered reflectance and range images, provided by a single sensor. HK-sign maps have been used to identify objects regions on range and intensity images, but not edges, as presented in this work. The combination of the computed range and reflectance edge maps has led to more accurate segmentation results than just by using either of them alone. The proposed algorithm has been tested on real images and compared to four traditional range image segmentation algorithms. Experimental results demonstrate the viability and usefulness of our approach

We describe how our robust estimator can effectively reject erroneous surface hypotheses, while identifying points describing a general quadric surface, by means of an improved approximation to the true geometric distance between each point and the surface. We present thorough experimental results with quantitative evaluation against ground truth.

This paper proposes a novel approach to perform 3D face matching by using a new metric, called the Surface Interpenetration Measure (SIM). The experimental results include a comparison with a state-of-art work presented in the literature and show that the SIM is very discriminatory as confronted with other metrics. The experiments were performed using two different databases and the obtained results were quite similar, showing the robustness of our approach. The authors would like to thank CNPq for financial support.

In this work, we discuss these artifacts and suggest improvements for two widely used volumetric integration techniques: VRIP and Consensus Surfaces (CS). A novel contribution is a hybrid approach, named IMAGO Volumetric Integration Algorithm (IVIA), which combines strengths from both VRIP and CS while adds new ideas that greatly improve the detection and elimination of artifacts. We show that IVIA leads to superior results when applied in different scenarios. In addition, IVIA cooperates with the hole filling process, improving the overall quality of the generated 3D models. We also compare IVIA to Poisson Surface Reconstruction, a state-of-the-art method with good reconstruction results and high performance both in terms of memory usage and processing time.

Our method uses a Simulated Annealingbased approach (SA) for range image registration with the Surface Interpenetration Measure (SIM) as the similarity measure, in order to match two face images. The authentication score is obtained by combining the SIM values corresponding to the matching of four different face regions. Experiments were performed on the FRGC v2 database simulating both verification and identification systems and the obtained results were compared to those reported in the literature. By using all the images in the database, a verification rate of 95.9% was achieved, at a False Acceptance Rate (FAR) of 0.1%. In the identification scenario, a rank-one accuracy of 99.5% was obtained. To our knowledge, this is the best rank-one score obtained on the FRGC v2 database, as compared to previously published results.
